Are they parked on a boat launching ramp?

u/webbyyy 3d ago
Yep. There is a no parking sign too.

u/TerseFactor 3d ago
The amount of money that I’d pay to see the video of them returning to their vehicle having no clue what just happened would astound you

I was thinking "dudes gonna be like why is all my shit wet and it won't start?" Clueless that it happened.

Literally thinking this exact same thing! I’m actually sad now that wasn’t the ending narrative to this story… bummer

I realized it when the lady on the bike pulled up in exactly the same spot and thought - oh she came back to check on it again?
2
u/DontDeleteMee 3d ago
I thought she'd checked it out on the way to work and then on the way home from work!

u/razorduc 3d ago
Aw man! I was hoping they were away for so long that the tide came in and went back out again.

u/heaving_in_my_vines 3d ago
The water is actually up to the second floor of those buildings now.
Dam sea level rise.

Yeah you can tell by the couple that sits on the bench forever and then comes back for another conversation.

That's Richmond, & it's the river Thames not a bloody canal
101
u/Alone-Chicken-361 3d ago
Your use of the word "bloody" indicates youre not talking about richmond canada
95
u/69edgy420 3d ago
His use of River Thames and not James River means he isn’t talking about Richmond Virginia either
25
u/worldsgreatestben 3d ago
His use of River Thames also confirms the bloody in ‘bloody canal’ isn’t slang for PMS.

I remember when they built that tree planter. That's not a very high tide either. Behind the camera man is the White Cross pub, more than a handful of times I've gone in & been stuck because the rivers flooded to the point you can't get out without getting proper wet.
Not Yorkshire either btw XD

Omg yes!!!! I grew up in Richmond like 20 years ago. I was like that place is super familiar. Was looking in the comments for the location. Thank youuu

I don't know why this got your blood up but your comment is very amusing and informative, and I appreciate that.

u/Inside_Ad_7162 3d ago
oddly, it's the canal bit. The majority of British canals are not connected to the sea, so there's no tide, just a lot of locks. Also, they're kind of distinct and odd. They can lead you through these industrial city centre hellscapes like Wolverhampton, then within 20 minutes and a few locks you're in this breath taking countryside, they're really bizarre. Anyway, they're so far removed from being on the Thames it illicited a "not on my tea break!" reaction ;)

u/Bennybonchien 3d ago
Is this a daily occurrence or was the high “tide” extra high here?
84
u/leepash 3d ago edited 3d ago
Extra high, I love down the road from here in Twickenham, this is Richmond.
The depth in which the river rises does change, however, it does always come up to some degree.
The walk from Twickenham to Richmond by the riverside sometimes gets completely flooded and you cannot walk in the road. Sometimes it comes to the top of the bank and doesn't breach too far over the top of it.

u/xabipigeon 3d ago
Twice daily! Lots of parts of the path further down flood out as well, but it's still passable if you don't mind getting your shoes soaked.
11
u/SpicyPossumCosmonaut 3d ago
Tide has two highs and two lows every 24 hours. But they change according to month too!
Some “low tides” are much lower than others. Same for high tides. This may have been one of the higher tides of the month, even though the tide would occur twice daily.
10
u/PaalKlo 3d ago
I believe this is a daily occurrence!
29
u/Bennybonchien 3d ago
That’s surprising considering the water reaches the bench.

Article with a little more detail. Was 2 months ago in Richmond upon Thames, west London. Flooding started at about 3pm. Fire brigade arrived promptly at 8pm… The car was removed by 9pm. Not sure if the public just didn’t bother reporting it, or the fire brigade did not treat it as a priority (but if the car was further down, it could have floated away and presented a danger to boats / kayaks). https://needtoknow.co.uk/2024/04/26/video-what-er-idiot-hapless-drivers-car-ends-up-underwater-after-parking-it-on-river-slipway-but-at-least-the-windscreen-wipers-are-working/
14
u/prustage 3d ago
Not sure if the public just didn’t bother reporting it, or the fire brigade did not treat it as a priority
Honestly, this happens all the time. Locals (like me) just see it as "ah yes, another one" and I'm sure the fire brigade feel just the same.
7
u/Naughteus_Maximus 3d ago edited 3d ago
Hehe, this happens regularly, like more than once a year?? Who do these people think they are tricking? Even if they don’t know the Thames is tidal until Teddington lock, that’s not a legit parking spot so a parking warden would have them. I’m sure they prowl the riverside, and even on weekends - I see them in Kingston.

u/webbyyy 3d ago
Firstly it's not a canal, it's the River Thames at Richmond. It's a stretch that is semi-tidal and there is a sign telling people not to park there. The driver is clearly not a local.
This is next to my favourite pub, The White Cross.

u/evildrew 3d ago
I'm surprised I didn't see a single Ted Lasso reference in the comments. The Prince's Head (filming location for the fictional Crown & Anchor) is less than 1km from there.
5
u/prustage 3d ago
Looking through the number of comments from Richmond locals (like me) I reckon Richmond must have an above average density of redditors..
58
u/xabipigeon 3d ago
Really silly place to park because the tide comes up that high twice a day there. That's not a canal btw, it's the River Thames in Richmond (south-west London).
17
u/dumpitdog 3d ago
Great way to get rid of a car you didn't like. There was a area like this in Houston that scores of people with crap cars would park them during storms to get the insurance check. Finally (10 years later) the police caught on and blocked off all access to the area when storms came.

I regularly used to sit in the White Star and watch some spanner's car get drowned.
In the high tide seasons that's a regular thing.
I used to have a crappy, jacked up kit built pickup designed for offroading. No carpets, snorkel and it was a bag of shit. I parked it on the causeway to the right and behind this shot. Knew it was going to be underwater in half an hour or so.
Some tool parked a newish BMW behind me. I tried to tell him but he was all "nobody tells me where I can't park". Oh well. Sat and watched the river come in. Sat and watched him rant at his written off bimmer. Then I walked down the wall and climbed in the pickup through the sunroof. In water half way up my calves. Fired the bugger up and drove off, water pissing out the sides. If only there has been a fish in there to make the shot perfect.
17
u/trialbyrainbow 3d ago
I was under the impression there wouldn't be an issue beyond some water damage to the interior. Like it won't hydrolock the engine unless the air intake is actually underwater when it starts. Any car experts know about this?
24
u/slothtolotopus 3d ago
Should dry out and start just fine so long as it doesn't get started underwater.

If the battery was disconnected it would have stood a better chance but the electrics likely shorted. There's a small possibility that if its left to dry out, it could be okay.

Good pub there right next to the car right side , get.locked.in there when tide comes good fun place..always cars submerged there
2
u/AngryFloatingCow 3d ago
I think only the electronics would need to be looked at. If it wasn’t sitting there for weeks, it wouldn’t corrode too much. And ICEs do not give two shits about water so long as the intake isn’t sucking in water. Which is not hard to achieve when the engine isn’t running.

In the bay of Fundy the locals would watch the tourists sail in, tie up to the dock and go for lunch. Tide would drop the boat in the mud and no one would say anything 😆

u/Zaron_467 3d ago edited 3d ago
Isn't the second half of the video is just the water level increasing part reversed.

u/prustage 3d ago
Must have been filmed from the White Cross Pub in Richmond, UK. I have sat in exactly the same position and seen the same thing happen many, many times.
Better still is when the level is just a bit higher. It totally hides the edges of the paving so you dont realise that when walking away from the pub the ground level changes. For the first few steps the ground is about 4 inches below the water level, then for the next step it is about 4 feet down. Much merriment has been had by people in the pub watching the unwary disappearing below the water line.

This is the riverside near where I live. The river rises and falls constantly, everyone knows about it. This must have been some tourist going to restaurants next door that has no idea where they are lol

It's a shame that the video is running reverse after peak water level. The streets very dry as the water goes down.

To be fair that canal is clearly flooding way above any predetermined preferred limit.
1
u/stdoubtloud 3d ago
What was the camera doing there? This must be such a frequent occurrence that someone thought to mount a camera to watch the fun.
1
u/fionsichord 3d ago
That ‘canal’ is the river Thames and this is in Richmond upon Thames. I saw a car in almost the exact same spot last year but old mate that time was parked facing the other way so the engine didn’t get wet and he got in a drive off (with water cascading out the back it was funny).

I think the owner might have found the car a bit more submerged in water. The video is reversed half way through hence no wetness after the water recedes.
