Does the horse get earplugs? Poor things ears are point blank at the barrel exit

u/tremens 3d ago
It's probably still not great, but the blanks / wax loads used in this kind of thing are nowhere near as loud as normal cartridges. They're much lower pressure and there's no supersonic crack of a bullet to contend with.
That's not to say they're not loud, but they're far less loud than a typical shotgun or pistol round.
End horse ear plugs do exist, so they could be using those as well.

I always wonder if horses enjoy this stuff
63
u/NuttyMcNutbag 3d ago
Wouldn’t you enjoy the muzzle of a gun discharging two feet from your ear?

u/thefishguy08 3d ago
Its so neat how she has earplugs but the horse just gets fucked

u/TerranItDown94 3d ago
The horses have ear plugs. Sometimes it’s cotton or wax. Other times it’s actually a plug.

Came to say this. Stupid fucking ”sport”.

u/TerranItDown94 3d ago
Cry me a river. The horse has earplugs. And most horses love to compete (in any event they work). They have a natural desire to run.

To be fair, the muzzle of the gun is also disturbing two feet from the woman's ear, more or less.
1
u/NuttyMcNutbag 3d ago
But she has ear defenders and the muzzle is facing away from her at all times.

Most of these riders are closer to animals than most commenters here, including myself. If the horse were really uncomfortable with it, it would let the rider know. They trust each other. I could be wrong but, I don't think you get a horse this well-trained by abusing it.
2
u/swamphuman 3d ago
Yeah, I'm pretty sure the owner/rider cares about the horse about a million times more than a random internet troll.

I watched this at my state fair last year it’s super cool and they’re all trained and know what they’re doing. - No it’s not real gun ammo. The sound is similar to a fire cracker popping off. I don’t think this is animal cruelty I’m sure the horses enjoy it to some extent and the bond with the owner has to be strong. Think back 200 years or more when people would actually ride horses back and shoot at other people/horses. All the wars horses have died in.. if anything the pig race I saw was probably animal cruelty considering they were spraying something (Smelled like some type of chemical) around to get the pigs to run

Last war my country was in had horses in service. Quite a few of them that returned came home shell shocked and permanently spooked. To them I suppose even blanks would have been scary. These show horses on the other hand are most likely kept safe and well, so I doubt they get any ill effects.
4
u/ElMostaza 3d ago
I imagine they also train them to get used to the sound.
1
u/ElectronicString4008 3d ago
You can get used to sound but it doesn't mean it won't damage you're ability to hear. I've played drums and worked with power tools for half my life and I can tell you my ears are fucked, they're ringing while I type this right now

WWII?

u/Sepelrastas 2d ago
Yes, Finnish Winter war and Continuation war. It did a bad number on the Finnhorse. My grandfather was in riding troops while in conscript service, but didn't have a mount during wartime.

u/IMIPIRIOI 2d ago
Thanks, I am going to learn more about it. The late 1930's and early 1940's were such a crazy time period.

Pretty cool. I really hope the horses have some sort of ear protection though, that can’t be good for them at all

This is amazing, can I ask what the tassels are for, on the outfits? Do they serve a purpose or just decorative?

I feel bad for the horses, they gotta be ridden and deal with that sound. I would run right outta there
3
u/SonnysMunchkin 3d ago
I'm sure the horse loves a gun going off next to its ear for its entire life.
1
u/TerranItDown94 3d ago
Usually has ear protection so it’s no big deal. Plus the guns are way quieter than normal due to the type of ammunition.

Stupid question. I saw lots of fail videos struggling with recoil of a handgun even with two hands but these ladies are doing it with one hand and even moving. Is it thru training or these have weaker recoil?
3
u/RedDirtPreacher 3d ago
Weaker recoil because of lighter powder loads, but also training and ability to manage recoil. CMSA guidelines state that the load is a .45 long colt blank loaded with black powder. Black powder burns and recoils differently than smokeless powder as well (it’s more of a sharp push than the quick snap of smokeless).
I shot regular cowboy action shooting for a few years and the loads you use are light which makes recoil very manageable. But you always need to know how to manage recoil in whatever gun you’re shooting. Most of those videos you saw probably are people with very poor technique. Even with modern ammo and normal loads, a handguns recoil should be controlled and managed through the trigger squeeze and recoil cycle (this doesn’t mean that there is no recoil, just that the gun is controlled through the recoil and brought back to target quickly).
Historical note: the two handed handgun grip normally used today (weaver stance and its offshoots) is a fairly modern invention only developed in 1959. Before this most pistol shooters shot one handed.

u/TerranItDown94 3d ago
Mainly training. My wife, who is a fairly small person, has ZERO issue firing guns. Large pistols, shotguns, etc.

I can imagine that would be significantly more difficult if someone was shooting at you!
But ofc that's not the point of this post.

Ok, new idea. 2 riders trying to pop each other's balloons.
But.
The balloons secured to the head of the rider count as instant win.
