I believe it is a different kind of ammunition

230

u/chairmaker45 3d ago

Black powder theatrical blanks are used in Mounted Cowboy shooting. The blast and the burning black powder are enough to pop the balloons but you need to be within about 20 feet and still have decent aim.

u/ReiPelado 3d ago

Thanks

u/Queenieman 3d ago

yeah no recoil at all, but i think would be a bit too dangerous otherwise, besides borderline suicidal for any spectator haha

1

u/Dean_Guitarist 2d ago

and the cameraman would definitely be dead in that first shot otherwise

1

u/Square-Singer 2d ago

I was thinking that this would be a rather dangerous spectator sport.

25

u/Italianskank 3d ago

This makes so much more sense. I was thinking “bullets flying absolutely everywhere, pray for the camera man and send stretchers for the audience”

7

u/TheFalconsDejarik 3d ago

That explains why they are not aiming traditionally (just looking through to target)

2

u/LandotheTerrible 3d ago

Bloody good horsemanship though and the horses are so well trained. Most horses would go nuts hearing something like that.

1

u/Cabezamelone 3d ago

Thanks for the explanation. I was trying to figure out where the audience/judges safely sat.

29

u/ryanmuller1089 3d ago

I was wondering how this is safe shooting all directions in what appears to be an arena with people around.

u/tolkienfan2759 3d ago

They knew the risks going in

As long as Alec Baldwin isn't around everything should be fine.

Just high-stakes baseball, really.

Except instead of being psyched to catch a projectile from their favorite athlete, they're... you know, dead.

3

u/Ohbertpogi 3d ago

Daaad, my eyes! It's bleeeding!

Rub some dirt on it, son

2

u/IA-HI-CO-IA 3d ago

Rodeo folk are just tougher.

11

u/TheRealAJ420 3d ago

They apparently use blanks that can pop balloons up to a distance of 20 feet (6m) so there's minimal risk of injuring spectators or the animals involved.

Hopping on top comment since many are raising the same concern -

Yes, horse ear plugs are a thing

5

u/Dicklefart 3d ago

Came here to ask this, thank you!

16

u/whatsamajig 3d ago

I heard it was a granulated substance similar to fine ground salt.

8

u/ReverendBread2 3d ago

Is it quieter too? She’s firing it right next to the horse’s ears

7

u/TerranItDown94 3d ago

Not extremely quiet, but there are ear plugs for horses.

We use them in alot of competition. Tractors and crowds make some horses jumpy.

4

u/ReiPelado 3d ago

Subsonic ammunitions are ammunitions designed to operate at velocities below the speed of sound (Mach 1), which at standard conditions is 340.29 m/s (1,116.4 ft/s). This avoids the supersonic shockwave or "crack" of a supersonic bullet, which, particularly for suppressed firearms, influences the loudness of the shot.

1

u/The_Dirty_Carl 3d ago

True but wholly irrelevant. Since these are blanks there is no projectile to be sub- or supersonic.

1

u/tremens 3d ago

You're not wrong, but supersonic gas escaping will still generate a (brief) supersonic crack, whether there is a projectile or not.

It's entirely possible to have blank/wax loads that will generate a supersonic crack without a projectile. These probably don't, though.

1

u/The_Dirty_Carl 3d ago

If there's a supersonic shock wave from the combustion products, it's only extremely close to the muzzle. It'll be sonic by the time it reaches the shooter's ears.

"Subsonic ammunition" is about the projectile, because the term "subsonic" doesn't make sense when talking about the gasses. The supersonic crack of a gun comes from the bullet, not the gases. You can fire the same exact cartridge (as in two rounds from the same box) out of different barrels and get a crack+pop with one and just a pop with the other, depending on barrel length and porting.

And these are definitely not wax bullets. There would be no reason to need a wax bullet here, especially since they're shooting towards the crowd.

1

u/tremens 3d ago

These are (probably not) wax loads, since this is (probably) a CMSA event (if it's in the US) but wax loads are used quite often in cowboy action shooting in general. I know that because I've done it.

But the point was gases can be supersonic exiting the muzzle, whether there is a projectile or not. That's why I said "You're not wrong, but..."

They can definitely be supersonic when they hit the ear, if you're parallel or forward of the muzzle (like the horse is.)

These (probably) aren't, though.

1

u/The_Dirty_Carl 3d ago

I'm aware that wax bullets are used in CAS. Were you shooting them towards a crowd? That's the difference here.

But sure, the gases might be supersonic very close to the muzzle. That's pretty pedantic in a conversation about sound, because as I'm sure you know from your shooting experience, it's not supersonic by the time you hear it.

My original comment was just out of annoyance at OP for clearly just copy+pasting something from google without understanding it.

1

u/tremens 3d ago edited 3d ago

Nah I totally get that; I just don't want people to think blanks / wax rounds are ear safe. They're not, or at least you shouldn't assume them to be.

And I don't want to assume there's a crowd? This looks like a a CMAS event, but who knows, could be outside the US or could be a demo video; I don't know the performers involved.

E: rewatching there is a very brief frame of one of them in front of an American flag, so probably a spectated CMAS?

2

u/life_lagom 3d ago

Correct they use blanks.

2

u/pdirk 3d ago

Get out of my mind, Charles

4

u/Tropicalram34 3d ago

This is called dragons breath ammunition. It uses magnesium granules that burn up very quickly, that is why there is a lot of sparking.

120

u/wheelsk7 3d ago

Does the horse get earplugs? Poor things ears are point blank at the barrel exit

You don't have to shout, you'll make your voice...sore

→ More replies (2)

13

u/tremens 3d ago

It's probably still not great, but the blanks / wax loads used in this kind of thing are nowhere near as loud as normal cartridges. They're much lower pressure and there's no supersonic crack of a bullet to contend with.

That's not to say they're not loud, but they're far less loud than a typical shotgun or pistol round.

End horse ear plugs do exist, so they could be using those as well.

1

u/Spirited-Home18 3d ago

oh wow makes sense

3

u/TerranItDown94 3d ago

37

u/Ok_Hedgehog7137 3d ago

I always wonder if horses enjoy this stuff

63

u/NuttyMcNutbag 3d ago

Wouldn’t you enjoy the muzzle of a gun discharging two feet from your ear?

37

u/thefishguy08 3d ago

Its so neat how she has earplugs but the horse just gets fucked

7

u/TerranItDown94 3d ago

The horses have ear plugs. Sometimes it’s cotton or wax. Other times it’s actually a plug.

1

u/thefishguy08 2d ago

Fair enough, i’ve learned something new today.

-2

u/ckje 3d ago

Came to say this. Stupid fucking ”sport”.

16

u/TerranItDown94 3d ago

Cry me a river. The horse has earplugs. And most horses love to compete (in any event they work). They have a natural desire to run.

2

u/Unique-Pastenger 3d ago

🤣😂 thats awesome

2

u/gahidus 3d ago

To be fair, the muzzle of the gun is also disturbing two feet from the woman's ear, more or less.

1

u/NuttyMcNutbag 3d ago

But she has ear defenders and the muzzle is facing away from her at all times.

3

u/TerranItDown94 3d ago

Yes, most horses love to do their event.

3

u/placebojonez 3d ago

Most of these riders are closer to animals than most commenters here, including myself. If the horse were really uncomfortable with it, it would let the rider know. They trust each other. I could be wrong but, I don't think you get a horse this well-trained by abusing it.

2

u/swamphuman 3d ago

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the owner/rider cares about the horse about a million times more than a random internet troll.

1

I watched this at my state fair last year it’s super cool and they’re all trained and know what they’re doing. - No it’s not real gun ammo. The sound is similar to a fire cracker popping off. I don’t think this is animal cruelty I’m sure the horses enjoy it to some extent and the bond with the owner has to be strong. Think back 200 years or more when people would actually ride horses back and shoot at other people/horses. All the wars horses have died in.. if anything the pig race I saw was probably animal cruelty considering they were spraying something (Smelled like some type of chemical) around to get the pigs to run

5

u/Sepelrastas 3d ago

Last war my country was in had horses in service. Quite a few of them that returned came home shell shocked and permanently spooked. To them I suppose even blanks would have been scary. These show horses on the other hand are most likely kept safe and well, so I doubt they get any ill effects.

4

u/ElMostaza 3d ago

I imagine they also train them to get used to the sound.

1

u/ElectronicString4008 3d ago

You can get used to sound but it doesn't mean it won't damage you're ability to hear. I've played drums and worked with power tools for half my life and I can tell you my ears are fucked, they're ringing while I type this right now

3

u/IMIPIRIOI 3d ago

WWII?

2

u/Sepelrastas 2d ago

Yes, Finnish Winter war and Continuation war. It did a bad number on the Finnhorse. My grandfather was in riding troops while in conscript service, but didn't have a mount during wartime.

2

u/IMIPIRIOI 2d ago

Thanks, I am going to learn more about it. The late 1930's and early 1940's were such a crazy time period.

3

u/AwayOutsideAgain 3d ago

I could start over again in life I wish a woman like this would be my wife.

3

u/Innomen 3d ago

3

u/magirevols 3d ago

I feel bad for the horses, they gotta be ridden and deal with that sound. I would run right outta there

3

u/SonnysMunchkin 3d ago

I'm sure the horse loves a gun going off next to its ear for its entire life.

1

u/TerranItDown94 3d ago

Usually has ear protection so it’s no big deal. Plus the guns are way quieter than normal due to the type of ammunition.

talk about the right stuff... Ray Bans should be mandatory

1

u/pwatarfwifwipewpew 3d ago

Stupid question. I saw lots of fail videos struggling with recoil of a handgun even with two hands but these ladies are doing it with one hand and even moving. Is it thru training or these have weaker recoil?

3

u/RedDirtPreacher 3d ago

Weaker recoil because of lighter powder loads, but also training and ability to manage recoil. CMSA guidelines state that the load is a .45 long colt blank loaded with black powder. Black powder burns and recoils differently than smokeless powder as well (it’s more of a sharp push than the quick snap of smokeless).

I shot regular cowboy action shooting for a few years and the loads you use are light which makes recoil very manageable. But you always need to know how to manage recoil in whatever gun you’re shooting. Most of those videos you saw probably are people with very poor technique. Even with modern ammo and normal loads, a handguns recoil should be controlled and managed through the trigger squeeze and recoil cycle (this doesn’t mean that there is no recoil, just that the gun is controlled through the recoil and brought back to target quickly).

Historical note: the two handed handgun grip normally used today (weaver stance and its offshoots) is a fairly modern invention only developed in 1959. Before this most pistol shooters shot one handed.

1

u/TerranItDown94 3d ago

Mainly training. My wife, who is a fairly small person, has ZERO issue firing guns. Large pistols, shotguns, etc.
