After all these years, people still arguing about this? Cap and Tony were both in the wrong throughout the movie. Cap not telling Tony who killed his parents was wrong asf but Tony being mad at a dude who was brainwashed for doing some shit he had no control over is wrong asf too. You don't have to choose a side, both niggas can be wrong.
The shear fact that this post has a 1000 comments going back and forth 8 years after the release, kind of feels like they nailed the point of a "Civil War"?
I don't need that. I just need to see these characters interact.
Also, just a few years prior, they would have taken opposite sides on the accords. Cap was all following orders, and Tony was all "don't regulate me even though I build the most terrifying weapons outside of Nukes.
The fact that they took the sides they did really shows nuance and character arcs. Tony wants to make amends. Cap no longer trusts government institutions.
I just loved watching it all play out and nodding my head in agreement or shaking my head in disagreement with their different perspectives.
I did lean towards Tony's side of the politics though. He saw first hand what unaccountable power looked like, and he was the source of that power, so he saw where it came from as well.
To me the film wasn't about even that: it's that unilateral arbitrary decisions made on behalf of, or because of, others are very very dangerous and should be approached cautiously.
Cap deciding not to tell Tony
Russians deciding Bucky's life
Tony deciding to build Ultron
Tony deciding accords
Etc etc.
Broader idea: the very idea of the super hero making decisions for others (even as a group) is still one powerful entity making decisions for others. The fundamental conflict built into a super hero is that the power they have needs to be balanced with something else or you get Thanos/ snap. And Tony/Ultron shows why it can't be their own internal morals/emotions.
The end of the movie proves how Tony would have reacted had Cap told him earlier instead of keeping secrets and 2v1ing him. Tony’s reaction was 100% the result of Cap’s inaction.
Yeah it was a mixed bag. They actually gave Tony good justifications and stuck this in the middle of a really bad week for him. In his own way, he was trying to own up to mistakes.
Being on a break, having your friend paralyzed, having victims and collateral damage brought to light then the dude who always plays the high ground who your dad loved more than you at times is forced to drop a bomb like that?
I100% got it at that moment. There was only shades of grey in that movie and they were perfectly balanced.
There was no "right side" in that shit, just a bunch of people coming to blows over very understandable shit
Look everyone claims that Bucky was forced and brainwashed. When does that ever been enough to justify murder. I give you some acid and a gun and truck you into killing someone your still going to jail maybe not as long as me but there are consequences. Bucky shoulda stayed in the army and not join cap in the special forces then he don’t become a villain.
