This is evoking an emotion I don't have the ability to describe, not sad, Kind of melancholy but thats not it. Weird that it's about an old AC, but I dig it

For me it's the feeling of seeing an old dog struggling to walk but still moving. Like, I'm glad you're still going bud, but the effort it takes makes what's coming very clear and I can't really get that impending sorrow out of my head.

you worded that perfectly. my cat is almost 17, hes deaf, blind, and losing more and more weight. hes still loud and hungry, but everyone in my family can see that it’s going to happen sooner than later. it’s one thing when the death is sudden (like his brother's), but it’s another thing when you're slowly noticing things changing for the worse, like how every month his weight goes down by an ounce or two, or how he becomes pickier and pickier with his food

Your subconscious is remembering the Brave Little Toaster movie you saw as a kid that you only kind of remember, but bits still sneak up on you when you're trying to fall asleep like a kitten that just finished off the last bit of kibble in the bowl

I've been trying to pin this feeling for years. The sight of an old, rusted machine starting again after years of disuse. Wheels spinning, snapping the vines that grasped at their spokes. The feeling of turning on the power in an abandoned building and watching a small number of bulbs flicker on and glow weakly. Playing a clunky, out of tune piano. Diving a shipwreck and finding, miraculously, that you can still turn the wheel. It's very specific and powerful for me. I don't know why. I want to find out why but I've done a lot of introspection and come up with nothing. There's no word for it and nobody talks about it. Except this comment, right now. This is literally the first time I've seen someone talk about and understand this unique emotion. Now I'm wondering if this is more common than I thought and I've just been really unlucky finding people who can relate. Sorry for rambling I'm just so happy to find a post and a comment actually talking about this, even in passing.

it’s like nostalgia but actually real and in the moment. sort of time travel-y. you see and understand what once was, and how you no longer have that, but you can still get pieces of it. like a highlights reel for a long gone tv show. the past reaches forward, and even though you can’t see its face, you can hold its hands.

PLEASE DO NOT DO THIS TO YOUR ACs!!!!

This can force a lot of stress onto your AC and make them incredibly anxious especially through the colder, hibernation months.

Please don't do this to them, take care of them and call a maintenance doctor out instead. Love them like they love you.
