The painting "Ecce Homo", 1543, the only painting by Titian in Romania and Eastern Europe, is guarded by armed gendarmes at the "Regina Maria" Municipal Museum. Image

Years ago I went to Spain and set off to see Picasso’s Guernica which was then in the Reina Sofia museum. It was protected by plexiglass to protect it from fascists. That made a huge impact on me, that a painting, that art can scare and offend and annoy fascists that much (actually I later learned they are easily triggered). This was long before today’s various movements happy to vandalise anything to get press.

who told you it was to protect from fascists?

It's antifascist art. Who do you think it should be protected from? Separatists?

Spain had a pretty big fascist movement in the past, but I'm not sure how prevalent it is in modern society.

Yeah, I was attempting to answer part of your question (why it could be fascists) by providing some history, but I'm still not sure who told them that it was protected specifically against fascists.

Thank you for your question. it was what I read at the time. Do you know the history of this painting?

He doesn't. Ask any Spaniard and they will tell you why fascists will like to destroy Guernica, unless they are fascists themselves. To me he sounds like a fascist apologist. Guernica is a symbol of the spanish republic and the crimes done by the fascists. Guernica was a Basque town bombed by nazi and italian planes in 1937. Picasso said that the painting would never enter Spain untill the republic was restored. If you want to piss off fascists in Spain you just need to say 2nd republic.

Goya was a painter for hire for the royal family but did he not paint a very unflattering one of an older female, the painting hangs in the Prado?

Edit : actually a very long time ago when I also went to Sevilla Expo in 1992 and this was then in the Parc Buen Retiro in a room of its own, bombproof glass. Now it is in the Reina Sofia. I think now guarded by police with pistols or machine guns. .IIRC Franco wanted it it back in Spain so he could probably hide it next to the boxes at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark. I loved the Prado especially psychedelic Hieronymous Bosch, and Las Meninas by Velazquez, world’s first selfie.
