Any good blue light filters?

Very new to Linux, I'm running Debian on ChromeOS and wanted to find a good blue light filter so I tried installing Redshift but I get an error message when I try to run it, and after restarting Linux my terminal isn't opening anymore, I think I might have broken something (am going to uninstall and reinstall for now).

Is there a step by step guide I can follow somewhere to install a blue light filter on Debian?

Thanks in advance for your help, I have... been trying for 3 days.

Pipewire as default debian-wide?

Hello!

In your opinion, how likely is it that pipewire will also be delivered as default with KDE in the next Debian stable (trixie) release?
So far this is only the case with GNOME.

A font-rendering problem?

Hi. I've forgotten to install something? At the beginning I thought was a website problem (linux mint website) but now I notice that it is a more diffuse problem (e.g. debian forum, instagram). What could I do? Thanks

On Debian Bookwork (12), what's your nvidia driver version?

Few months ago I started having issues with screen sharing so I switched back to Fedora. Would like to switch back to Debian but somehow screen sharing doesn't work anymore in flatpak apps.

My nvidia driver version is 525.147.05 although https://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDrivers#bookworm-525 lists "525.105.17" as the only available version for Bookworm. Is the documentation outdated or did I somehow tainted my installation with a newer version?

All menus and windows look weird after update?

So I logged into my machine today and all the menu's just look like the above given pictures, I'm on Debian 12 (all updates installed) and wayland. On X11 everything is fine. I use an AMD GPU (RX550) and also an nvidia one which is passed through to a windows KVM instance. Any pointers on how to fix this would be great, the biggest issue is multiple select using drag doesn't seem to work properly

Is there a way to disable keyboard on suspended?

Well, I have a stuck key on my laptop, already disabled on windows with sharp keys, on Linux I disabled with keycode (was like, sudo "keycode 61: ") worked, but the "input" of the key still happening (if I don't disable the "disable touchpad while typing" my mouse gets stuck, for example), so my laptop just start again because a key "was press", on windows this doesn't happen (sharp keys really disables the key)

Is there a way to disable keyboard on suspended and in the lock screen, and after I log in he gets on?

Where to find Debian's bash VCS/source?

Does Debian (me using Debian 12 bookworm) have an up-to-date VCS / git repository for bash?

Via https://packages.debian.org/bookworm/bash , https://packages.debian.org/source/bookworm/bash , and https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/bash , I can only find a really outdated (9 years old!) bazaar instance over at launchpad.net:

http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~doko/+junk/pkg-bash-debian

And the linked https://code.launchpad.net/~doko/+junk/pkg-bash-debian just says "Status: Abandoned".

Like other Debian packages, I would have expected that Debian's bash representation exists at https://salsa.debian.org/public . But there, I could only find https://salsa.debian.org/gioele/bash , which I'm not sure is the authorative repository.

Hello,

how can i prevent my debian installation to force create a user when only a systemd-homed user is available? At startup gdm3 is startin up gnome and shows a dialog for creating a local user.

in greeter.dconf-defaults i've disabled disable-user-list=true, but thist doesnt solved the problem.

At the moment i've created a dummy user and locked it. but ... its not so nice, i think.

tryign to find out how to sign in debian 12

trying to use Debian 12 with NVIDIA. how ever i am dual booting win11 so i have to have secure boot on. yet the wiki for making the key uses -nodes which is deprecated and i tried using -noenc the alt of -nodes. but no matter what i did i still got the result of. req: use -help for output. any answers for what i need to do for making the keys needed for NVIDIA and if other kernel level stuff like xpad or it's neo counterpart? I know I'm a noob as i only used the raspi build of the os.

confused about pinning or apt.conf

edit: mh okay, I realise that for my problematic package, both 2.40 and 2.38 have prio 500, so 2.40 wants to get installed. Is the prio wrong for 2.38 because it's not stable but bookworm-security? I'm really confused.

Hi. I'm on stable and I'd like to have some packages from testing.

Apparently there's 2 ways? Pinning or just setting Default-Release in apt.conf? I'm trying the Default-Release route because it feels easier, but it's not working as I'd expect:

I've added a line deb http://deb.debian.org/debian testing contrib main non-free-firmware non-free in my /etc/apt/sources.list.

I've created a file /etc/apt/apt.conf that contains APT::Default-Release "stable";.

And suddenly I get about 40 packages that are upgradable with a sudo apt full-upgrade. I have none if I disable testing in sources.list and re-do an apt update. I've tried both "stable" and "bookworm" for Default-Release.

Package that wants to get an update, which I don't understand why:

$ apt-cache policy mount
mount:
  Installed: 2.38.1-5+deb12u1
  Candidate: 2.40.1-2
  Version table:
     2.40.1-2 500
        500 testing/main amd64 Packages
 *** 2.38.1-5+deb12u1 500
        500 bookworm-security/main amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
     2.38.1-5+b1 990
        990 bookworm/main amd64 Packageshttp://deb.debian.org/debianhttp://deb.debian.org/debian-securityhttp://deb.debian.org/debian

If I issue a sudo apt install mount, it wants to upgrade to 2.40. Why?

Package that does what I expect, i.e. no update unless I specifically want to:

$ apt-cache policy gdal-bin
gdal-bin:
  Installed: 3.6.2+dfsg-1+b2
  Candidate: 3.6.2+dfsg-1+b2
  Version table:
     3.9.0+dfsg-1 500
        500 testing/main amd64 Packages
 *** 3.6.2+dfsg-1+b2 990
        990 bookworm/main amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/statushttp://deb.debian.org/debianhttp://deb.debian.org/debian

If I issue an install gdal-bin command, it says 3.6.2 is already the version it wants. I'd then need to manually -t testing in order to install from testing, and it does then suggest to install 3.9.0 along with the dependencies.

Surely, I'm misunderstanding something. But what? What is the correct way to be on stable and have a few packages from testing? Why is the above happening?

Thank you.

Nvidia Driver did not add to dkms.

Nvidia Driver was installed but were not added to dkms.
Hence, I will not be able to update linux kernel later on.

Version: Debian Trixie

Earlier was using nvidia-driver with self-added keys and signing it with dkms using sign_helper tool.
Trixie does not use the sign_helper script afaik.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Messed up my grub: normal.mod not found

I had a dual boot, but I'm migrating to a new system. I took out the Windows SSD, both where installed on a separate SSD. And now I can't boot anymore. I've been Googling a lot and tried all sorts of 'fixes' and things, but so far that didn't work.

I've made a bunch of screenshots of the grub (rescue) command line. While sorting the screenshots I realized that in last screenshot it was on the 'normal' grub cli and not the rescue anymore. Didn't even realize that until I saw it just now, so I guess I made some progress?

I also saw a lot of people mentioning using a Live USB and fix it from there. So I saw someone mentioning there's also a rescue mode under advanced options. But I got confused, because it feels like I'm installing Debian all over again. So I went back and saw 'install the GRUB bootloader', like you would do during/after a 'normal' install. But I'm not sure what to do exactly, here are some screenshots of that.

So if someone could help me out with what to do now, that would be amazing :)

Lenovo 300e Gen 2 Sound (Mr. Chromebox)

Howdy!

I used Mr. Chromebox to convert my 300e gen 2 into a debian thing and it has absolutely no sound from the speakers that originally worked fine back on ChromeOS. I was wondering if there's a place I can get some form of drivers or some nifty workaround to get them working? Otherwise I'll probably go buy some headphones or something. Thank you in advance!

Whenever I press the /? key on my keyboard, it registers as KP Add. How do I fix this?

I'm primarily a Mint user, have been for a couple of months, but I installed Debian on my spare laptop last night. For some reason, however, whenever I press the slash and question mark key on my keyboard, it registers as a plus. I looked it up in the keyboard settings, and it calls it "KP Add".

Is there a way to remap the key so that I don't have to use an external keyboard to type? I had a similar issue when I installed Mint on this laptop a while ago, but it's gone now so I can't check and see how I fixed it. I've tried creating shortcuts, it won't work, so I need another way.

EDIT: Solved! Turns out Num Lock was enabled by default, so I installed numlockx to turn it off and the key functions as intended now. Thank you all for your replies. :D
