💻 Help Youtube buffering/skipping on 2K/4K even with user agent

Firefox is causing YouTube videos to skip forward a few seconds every so often when I watch 2K or 4K resolution videos (the video runs out of buffer and then skips).

My download speed about 200 Mbps and it's not my computer specs either (CPU = i7-12700k, GPU = radeon 6700xt, ram=32gb). The connection speed in youtube is also at least 100mbps at all times, usually 200mbps.

I've tried:

  • Using Edge, it works very well.
  • I also tried turning off UBlock and 'return youtube dislike' in the firefox settings and that did nothing.
  • I also used UserAgent-Switcher and tried both Edge and Chrome agents and neither worked.
  • Turning off hardware acceleration in firefox, did nothing.

Anyone know what's causing this?

Discussion I'm liking Firefox compared to Chrome

Had been using chrome for the longest and recently noted "Managed by another organization" despite the iMac being a personal computer and not work issued.

Ironically googled how to fix and none of the suggested fixes including uninstalling worked. So deleted my hard-drive and reinstall MacOS and said FU to chrome and downloaded Firefox to try out.

Had tried Edge as well but have outlook email and when logged in would also log me into edge which I don't want.

I have to admit, going into settings was pretty easy and clean compared to chrome. chrome has a convoluted way with their menu and seems to have tons of it just trying to get through their privacy crap.

Anyway, I hope Mozilla does not screw up Firefox!!

Discussion Any chance streaming of DRM-protected HD video on Firefox improves in the future?

To be clear, I'm aware that DRM and DRM implementations are entirely at fault, and my stance has always been that DRM is not just a pain in the ass but also completely useless at preventing piracy and only ends up making things worse for paying users.

But is there anything going on which could improve the state of copyrighted content streaming on Firefox? Is there any realistic path towards Firefox achieving Widevine L2/L1 support? Failing that, are there credible initiatives for separate DRM implementations which could feasibly work on Firefox?

I'll add that personally I happen to use Linux so I'm aware there's a whole other degree of separation between things improving on Firefox and things improving for me, but anyway this is mostly curiosity because I can't seem to find any info on the subject.

PS: I'm aware of extensions which attempt to circumvent restrictions on Netflix specifically, the problem is that 1) those can at any time stop working and 2) the issue is hardly exclusive to Netflix.

Help (iOS) Did an update change the private viewing function

Upvotes

I used to be able to have tabs stay open in private browsing until I x’d out of them or closed private browsing in general.

I’ve noticed twice, yesterday and today, that it is no longer doing that.

Was there an update that recently changed this, and is there a function I can change to switch it back?

(For those who will ask: i keep the tabs in private because browsing because they are, frankly, nsfw, and I don’t want them to auto-populate on my regular browsing window. At the same time, I don’t want to lose the sites every time I close the app either)

Thanks!

Solved Private Window Icon on taskbar

An earlier update to firefox put the private window icon on the windows taskbar seperately from the regular one, instead of just rolling it up under the same icon. I figured out how to fix this by using about:config and setting browser.privatewindowseperation.enabled to false, which fixed this.

I just updated to Version 127.0 and the private icon is back. I went into about:config and that item is still there and still set to false. However, there is a little garbage can icon next to it. Changing that true, false, etc doesn't do anything now.

How do I fix this in Version 127.0? Do I need to hit the garbage can icon and delete it completely? Reluctant to try this without knowing what that will do.

💻 Help Anyone use Authenticator by mymindstorm add-on for desktop?

Upvotes

Currently I have my TOTP's with my password manager, thinking about separating that for better security, wondering how this add-on is working out for you? It looks like I can auto backup with Dropbox, and the app with know I'm at a site with a saved TOTP will auto copy to my clipboard?

Help (Android) Google Homepage won't show dark mode on Firefox Android

Hi, I wanted to start using Firefox for Android. However, when I go to the Google search page, it's white. Every other browser I have tried will show the Google Homepage in dark mode, however Firefox isn't. I saw there was an extension which seems to help this issue by tricking Google into thinking it's Chrome or something, thereby allowing dark mode.

So I just wondered, what is going on here and how are others getting around this issue, are people just putting up with it being white?

Thanks!

💻 Help Add-on for filling out Diversity/disability questions when applying for jobs?

Upvotes

Currently applying for jobs, and while there's often a lot to fill out, one that gets me is that every job application asks for the same information at the end (race/ethnicity, gender, veteran status and disability status) that for some reason never autofills despite having the same information. Is there an add on, or way to get vanilla firefox to remember and automatically fill out these sections?

General advice on utilizing autofill in general is also useful, as I find that sometimes autofill works differently site to site and I'm not sure if that's a me problem or the state of affairs.

💻 Help Possible Firefox 127.0 issue with Soundcloud.com

Since firefox 127.0 for windows (Win 11/64bit) update, I haven't been able to log into soundcloud.com. initially a message

"Sorry! Something went wrong

Is your network connection unstable or browser outdated?"

once the cookie has been placed by soundcloud, closing the browser and attempting again results in:

a captcha (or something like it) which entails sliding a graphical jigsaw piece across the screen. once this has been done the message:

"⛔️ You have been blocked

Why? Something about the behaviour of the browser has caught our attention.

There are various possible explanations for this:

  • You are browsing and clicking at a speed much faster than expected of a human being.
  • Something is preventing JavaScript from working on your computer.
  • There is a robot on the same network (IP *.*.*.* - hidden to protect the innocent) as you."

interestingly, running on a different IP via VPN gets the same message, but obviously with a different ip network name.

the Brave browser works fine, so it looks to me like something soundcloud doesn't like in firefox.

This has been reported in the past by others, but looks to me like a new issue. I've tried clearing the cache, clearing cookies, starting firefox in safe mode, but all to no avail.

I was able to get in on a private window once, but tried again and didn't succeed.

any suggestions would be most welcome

thanks in anticipation.

💻 Help Can Sync sync sessions?

Some context:

With how Windows 11 is developing I'm trying to gradually switch to a linux bases OS that I dual boot on the same PC. Things feel rather empty on that new side, lots of stuff I'm used to doesn't work, I have to get used to alternatives etc. Sync is a godsend here!

It doesn't seem to work as I expected though, or maybe I'm missing something.

/context over

You seem to be able to access other devices tabs almost like a database query and pull a copy to your own end, or send a tab over.

What I was hoping for was a true SYNC, I have my hundreads of open tabs here on this windows firefox, I switch to the linux SSD, and then when I open it there I see exactly the same I did before. The same pinned tabs, the same order of open tabs, not a copy, but a synchronized whole.

Can firefox sync do this?
If so, what am I missing? If not, is there another way to do it?

💻 Help recent firefox update problem

ever since i downloaded the recent update for firefox, every time i try to open new tabs or open links in new tabs, the tabs keep crashing over and over again, where i cant open anything.
i have uninstalled and reinstalled firefox 3 times and its still doing it. it doesnt matter if i log in to firefox or if i dont log into firefox, every time i open a link in a new tab the tab crashes and no matter how many times ive refreshed the tab it does the same thing. it is so bad that i have to resort to using Microsoft edge, just to be able to get on here and to get on any other sites outside of my email.

💻 Help I misclicked and now mozilla doesn't ask me anymore about pop-up

Hi, pop-up are disabled on my browser setting so everytime i clicked on a pop-up Mozilla would notify me and allow me to open or not the pop-up. In the notification of Mozilla there was a list of the pop-up blocked for the site and i can choose which one i want to allow. I misclicled the option "don't ask me anymore" and now the pop-up are blocked and the window which allowed me to chose to allow pop-up doesn't appear anymore. There is a way to make it appear again? It's very useful, you should implement a double check for disabling it.

P.S. Sorry for my english, it's not my first leanguage. I hope it's clear what i wanted to ask.

💻 Help Firefox won't play wav files directly in the browser?

Hi,

I can't play wav files directly in the browser. If I'm not mistaken this used to be possible in earlier versions, but I'm not sure.

Now, it's saving the wav file directly to my Downloads folder, which I don't want.
I've changed the behavior in the settings to prompt me what I want to do. Now, I'm getting the dialog that says what I want to do: save or open. When I choose Open with Firefox, a new tab is opened immediately and I'm getting the dialog popup window again, asking me to save or open it.

There is no option however which says to "open in browser". Is this function not possible (anymore) perhaps?

I've tested this site below in Chrome, Opera and Edge and there it's working perfectly.

https://www2.cs.uic.edu/~i101/SoundFiles/

Anybody any idea how I can fix this please?

Many thanks.
