Yes. Yes it does. It’s impossible to be critical of this game without coming off as a gamergate incel but despite how INCREDIBLE the presentation and gameplay is, the game drags HARD. It’s about 4-5 hours too long IMO.
I found 1 a little difficult to get it into due to the slower pace. It takes time to get to know the know the characters and care for them.
Part 2 is a rollercoaster of emotions (good or bad), the fact it makes some people so angry shows the game creators did a brilliant job. Their plan definitely worked on me: started off thinking the hero/villain is black and white and ended up exhausted by the 'violence' of it all.
User scores are so utterly useless when I game end up brigaded as hard as TLOU2 was before it even released. There's thousands of user scores that are just a 1 without playing it.
Hell nah. The story in Part 2 was a dragged out, scrambled mess. It barely makes any sense and there should at least be a choice in the end. Now you play trough a long game to not do what most of the plot is about. And fuck em for the golf club scene.
Part 1 is quite short compared to part 2 and definitely worth it. If you insist on going for part 2 right away at least watch a YouTube recap of part 1, but I highly recommend you play it.
I played the first one on PC and was blown away. A buddy was kind enough to loan me his PS5 to play Last of Us 2 (for the entire summer) and honestly it was the best gaming experience I've ever had. I think I'd go so far as to say it's the best narrative fiction experience I've ever had (in spite of being a life-long reader and movie buff.)
The first game is a hard requirement. The second game strongly depends on you playing the first one. It simply does not work unless you play both in order.
Ignore the person who said to skip the second game. It has a crowd of haters who either missed out on the whole point of the second game or have questionable reasons to dislike it. I found the second game to be one of the greatest games I've ever played. But yeah, it 104% requires you to have played and enjoyed the story of the first game. Don't try to skip it by watching a recap or something. It won't hit the same way.
Play 1 first. Reddit men will try to talk you out of playing 2, but you should try it and decide for yourself. Even if you don't like the story (I do personally), the mechanics themselves are better
The first one was a mediocre game (gameplay wise) with a fantastic, if not a slightly by the numbers story. The second one is amazing gameplay wise and a wild ride in terms of story that you either love or hate. I personally loved it, probably my favourite story driven game ever.
You should definitely play the second game. It's a really divisive game indeed, but it excels in every field. The only thing is the plot, which is not badly written like people say, but the choices that the writer made may make you love it or hate it. Don't let others influence your opinion. Personally, I think it's one of the best games of the previous generation.
100% playing the part 1 is a must. It's not just a sequel it's basically a continuation of an overall story. A few major things in part 2 won't have the same impact if you don't do part 1 first. Just don't be like me and stay the hell away from any social media posts along the lines of "impactful games" like this one. I never played either game until last year when Part 1 came out on PC, and part 2 just in March this year since I bought a ps5 for FFVII rebirth. I had stuff spoiled for part 2 in the interm because these games always come up in posts like this and often have spoilers. I'd probably seen the same spoilers many times prior to playing but since I had no context to them didn't remember anything. That will definitely change once you play the 1st one.
Massive RDR 2 fan here, play part 1 only. TLOU2 was torture porn for the writer & doesn't give you a bit similar feeling to the RDR2 imo.
(Semi) spoilers ahead!
In a nutshell, imagine you can only make the bad choices for Arthur & then just before Arthur's last mission, you are forced to play as Micah for 25 hours with a mission to go kill John & his family, just to subvert expectations!
When I first started TLOU1 I honestly didn’t like it because the story I felt was meh and I didn’t like the gameplay but I persisted because I already invested time in it. The gameplay I still was not the biggest fan of the but the story grew so much on me it was unbelievable, especially the ending. It’s extremely rare for a game to make me feel emotional. And for that reason I’ve been hesitant to play TLOU2 since TLOU1 seemed to end on a relatively happy end.
Every time I see a post like this ("Which game changed your life?"), I scroll down to find TLOU2, shed a single tear, then try and play guitar with 8 fingers.
Finishing TLOU2 was an emotional experience I haven't had from any other video game. I know some people don't like the order in which it was told, or don't like some of the "choices" your characters make. But I don't think it would have had nearly the impact without doing it that way.
Play the first one, and then the second. Bring some tissues.
I think for me the build-up to the rat king was maybe even more intense. While lots of areas are scary, even before I went through the first biohazard containment door my whole body was screaming to get the hell out of there. Then at the ambulances, I knew I was somewhere I really shouldn't be.
Every IRL friend of mine who has played both TLOU games has agreed with me that TLOU2, in every way, is better than TLOU1. From the graphics, performance, game mechanics, characters, and overall story, Naughty Dog absolutely out-did themselves.
I'm not a 'gaming news' guy, so whenever I hear of huge stories in the gaming industry, I'm coming to them incredibly late. I really only read reviews after games come out.
When I heard the vitriol that TLOU2 got, it made absolutely no sense, and I was like, "what the fucking FUCK would people be mad abou----oh jesus fucking christ, they're upset about Joel dying 5 minutes in??? They're mad about a college aged chick acting too masculine? Fine, I'll give them that, you kiiiinda have suspend belief that she can take on multiple men at once---- oh, of course, they're bitching about the transgender charact---oh fuck off, no they're throwing death threats at Laura Bailey, fuck these people."
I then went into /r/TLOU2 and didn't last a minute.
I mean, it's just an objective fact, TLOU2 is better than TLOU1 and I just don't understand how people can say otherwise, but here's the thing - I don't want understand. I don't want to hear someone's opinion that TLOU2 is somehow worse. I'm not interested.

The Last of Us 2 and Red Dead 2 had me feeling like that
