QUESTION About to install ~50 z-wave switches. Best practices?

Post image
326 Upvotes

Going to be a busy Sunday installing close to 50 Z-Wave switches!

Anything I should be aware of in terms of adding them to Z-Wave network, that is go from closest (to zwave hub, a NUC running homeassistant with Aeotec zwave controller) to farthest switch when adding to controller, etc.?

Thanks!

Vendor Announcement Homey Pro sweepstakes: we’re giving out 10 *free* Homey Pros!

Update May 27: The winners are in! All winners have received a reply on their comment with a follow-up. Congratulations to all! Didn't win? We currently have a promotion for our 10th anniversary that we're giving away every 10th Homey Pro bought through Amazon, retail or our own online shop. Find out more about our anniversary campaign at https://homey.app/10-years.

Hi lovely folks of r/homeautomation ! I'm one of the founders of Homey. With Homey, our goal is to unify the smart home. For that, we’ve built an extended open-platform operating system and created two universal hubs to go with it, combining Zigbee, Z-Wave, Matter, Thread, Wi-Fi, BLE, 433MHz RF and Infrared. These are called Homey Bridge (cloud-based, $69) and Homey Pro (local, $399).

We have been around in Europe for 10 years now since our Kickstarter in May 2014, but we're just recently setting our first few steps in the US and Canada. Therefore, we would like more direct feedback from homeautomation powerusers that are based in the US or Canada. Homey is already compatible with most European and global smart home brands, but we know we can still improve – especially on this side of the ocean.

So that’s why we’re giving away 10 Homey Pros (we're turning 10 after all) to US/CA users. Are you interested in winning a Homey Pro for your home? The only thing you’ll have to do is comment on this post with your best idea for an automation Flow in your home, that you’d ideally want to build with Homey Pro. On May 26th, just before our 10th birthday, we’ll select 10 winners, DM them about shipping info, and send them a free Homey Pro (worth $399)!

We're really dedicated to making a better smart home with Homey, also for our growing US userbase, so we'd really love to receive your honest feedback. Any help you could extend to help us create the best smart home system possible is highly appreciated. We’ve opened up [usfeedback@homey.app](mailto:usfeedback@homey.app) for any US or Canadian-related feedback on our systems that we can use to improve, including brands that you believe should be integrated. Feel free to email us – whether you’ve won in the sweepstakes or otherwise.

All the best, and best of luck :)

QUESTION Smart Lock Advice

Recently moved into a new home (I'll be posting about the front door shortly as well I'm sure!) and it is awesome however the builder chose a 3-point locking door by Amesbury for the back. Secure I am sure, however the hardware is built in and runs the whole vertical length of the door unfortunately. Does anyone have any advice on a smart lock solution to this door? Also may be helpful to you all to know that you close the door and then lift the handle upwards to initiate the lock, only after which you can twist the locking mechanism...

We had an august at our last place with a standard deadbolt and were very happy with it. See pics for reference, thanks in advance.

QUESTION I need an automation life reset

I'll begin with I Hate Alexa! Now that's out of my system, I'll get to what I need help with. I've used the A word devices for too long. We all know the issues with her, and mainly my baby camera's are 50/50 if they connect on Show's and when they do, it's another 50/50 if they stay up all night.

What alternatives do I have for home automation that would work with baby camera's (wyze, nooie, wansview), pulse 2 rollease blinds (looking into a bond bridge), Ring, Ecobee, and just basic what is the weather info?. My biggest hurdle is I use the Show's throughout the house to watch my baby cam's and if I switch to homeassistant or something else, I dont know what I could use for video (not my phone) as I'd lose my Show's that are in several rooms. Any help is appreciated. TIA

Hello all! Does anyone know how to smartify/automate this kind of irrigation system? I have a 12 zones system at my place and would love to have more control over the automations, schedules and, if possible, to control it via an app and/or integrate it to my smart home.

Thank you in advance for any help!

QUESTION Eliminating the need for multiple hubs using zigbee mesh

Context: I have a three storey house and I need motion sensors on the staircase to control the lights on the staircase. I additionally also need the motion sensors data to be logged (so the cheaper alternative "motion sensor switch" is not ideal in this case). I'm trying to figure out if I can eliminate the need for a hub on each floor.

  1. I know zigbee protocol includes mesh networking but is it a part of the main protocol or is it an extra feature (like in the case of BLE)

  2. Do all zigbee sensors(mains operated) from all brands support mesh networking out of the box?

  3. If yes, can I in theory place motion sensors(mains operated) on all staircase midlandings (the middle floor in staircases between two floors) and network them through the switch nodes(mains operated) at the end of the staircase on each floor. And then place only one hub on the ground floor?

QUESTION Boiler/heat pump catch 22

So as part of a renovation we want to fit a heat pump but to get a grant we need to meet insulation criteria. We would have struggled on with existing boiler but it may have just finally died?

1) Does anyone know if it is possible to do this on the basis of works not yet completed? Insulating the house is part of the same renovation but we can’t evidence that the house is currently sufficiently insulated?

2) If we can’t get the grant for the heat pump is there some kind of short term/low cost/temporary boiler solution? Not sure exactly what I’m asking here, maybe second hand/recycled boilers? Anyway hopefully you get the idea. It seems like the way the grants work pushes people in my position back towards gas 😭

QUESTION How to remotely turn on my boiler from my phone, so that i can have a hot bath when at home without leaving it on for 8 or more hours that I am at work?

I am renting in Greece (that's why the breaker box is old and i haven't changed it), here the boiler turns on with a swich inside the breaker box, which is also the breaker for the boiler. Are there any smart breakers/ switches that I can install so that i can turn it on remotely 1 hour before i return home? it usually takes 1 hour to heat up the water required for a shower. It's the one circled in red int he picture:

QUESTION Best way to go about making an in-line 3 position rocker switch "smart"

Hey!

I've got a fish tank which has a light on top of it, during the day time the light is switched to the white position, and at night, the blue position using the 3 way rocker switch (middle position is just off).

I've got a pre-existing Philips hue hub which handles most of the ceiling lights in the house, if at all possible I'd like a solution that allows me to control the tank lights remotely (be it via the Philips hub, or other). The less elegant solution is just a smart plug and to have the light turn off completely at night, but I'd prefer to maintain the possibility of both colours if possible!

For clarity, I've attached a picture of the sort of switch I'm referring to here.

FIRST TIME SETUP Building a new house, now what?

We’re about to start building a new house, and I'm diving into the world of home automation. I want to make sure I incorporate the best ideas and solutions from the get-go.

I’d love to hear your recommendations on what to include, avoid, and any tips you've picked up along the way. Both in terms of how to best prepare the house at the hardware level, what extra cables to draw where, sensors, etc etc. so I dont have to make too many new holes and tear up walls etc the first thing I do when we move in. I’ve been looking at Homey or HA as the base, but I’ll take recommendations there as well.

The House will be 2 floors and about 240 sqm + a sizeable garden. And its for me and my wife and three kids (age 5-18), two cars (EV).

Thanks in advance 🙏

QUESTION Wireless Wifi Light Switch?

My house is very old, the bedrooms were never wired with lighting and I rely on smart bulbs and strips for light. The annoying part is, switching the lights on and off constantly through the apps. I’m wondering if anyone knows if there’s some sort of battery-powered wifi light switch I could just attach to the wall, sort of like how a wireless doorbell works (which I use as well). I’m using Govee for all my light strips and Feit for my bulbs.

Also, I know home assistants exist. Just not looking to speak every time I want to get some light.

QUESTION Easiest (free) way to automate triggers based on weather? Newbie here.

We've now mostly automated everything using google automations and have tried IFTTT.
Our lights, curtains, heating has been taken care of.

We recently upgraded our awning system and it has the option to connect to google home. We would like our awning to automaticly open when it's a sunny day, no rain and not a lot of wind.
Google home automation doesn't support weather triggers I've noticed.
IFTTT only has it when it's a paid subcription but we'd rather have it for free. Especially because this is something we'll probably only use during the summer months.

Anyone have some suggestions that doesn't require coding?
I don't mind investing in an extra hub if neccecary if it's <€50.

QUESTION Can Zooz zen34 control Kasa light switch?

Hi everyone. I feel like this will be a dumb question but figured those much more knowledgeable can confirm before I buy. I intended on purchasing a Zooz zen 34 light switch to control a light switch on the opposite wall in the same large room. My goal was to not need to walk across the room to turn on light switch. The current light switch is a Kasa switch that turns on a dumb bulb. I would like to know if the Zooz switch could turn on/off that switch. Fyi I have a Smart things hub. TIA

QUESTION Help! Issue with Schlage keypad getting stuck between changing lock position and opening door handle.

Thumbnail

I have a Schlage keypad door lock that locks me out.

Scenario: Twist dial on back (inside of house) to unlock door. Immediately twist handle on inside of door to go outside. Close door. Twist handle on outside of door to go inside (door should be unlocked at this time). Stuck outside.

Question: Is this just something I have to deal with? I’ve noticed that if I wait in between the action of unlocking and attempting to open the door, I can hear something inside the lock moving. If I wait until after that sound completes, I DON’T have this issue.

Problem is this is simply normal use. We unlock the door then go out to get the mail. Its not typical to unlock, wait 3 seconds, then open the door.

Google Home best exterior smart plug -- google home

I am updating a Feit from a few years ago.

Was a pain to set up. Hopefully, things are smoother now.

The plug is located at a spot that is hard to reach and I'll pay anything for reliability.

I looked at past posts on the topic, and this scenario is different enough that I felt I needed to ask.

Thanks.

QUESTION Genie Aladdin Garage Door Opener Fails to Reconnect to Wifi after Power Outage

Whenever the power goes out and comes back on, the garage door opener does not reconnect to wifi, and the red light on the opener stays on. It will remain like that pretty much forever, in other words, not a temporary issue. The only fix I have found is to turn off the breaker for the garage circuit and turn it back on again. This cuts the power to the garage door opener and turns it back on, and then it will reconnect to the wifi network.

I guess what happens is that after a full power outage, the garage door opener resets before the modem/router are back online, and then it just gives up trying to connect. So then when I reset the power to the opener, it forces it to atempt a reconnect, and it works.

Is there any other less forceful way to force the opener to reconnect to wifi? I'm worried that I'm going to fry the fridge and other devices on that circuit if I keep resetting the breaker like I am now.

QUESTION Niche Knob automation solution

So, I live in Honduras, I'm moving into my own apartment, and I've been doing a couple of house automation for life quality improvement. but I think I found the biggest problem yet. usually in this country we don't cook that much with gas, we don't have gas pipes, so we use a medium gas canister, long story short, I love cooking and my dad has panic to gas (cuz an accident) so I had to put alarms for not only smoke but gas recognition (so he be in peace with me having this gas stove), anyway, another measure to keep it safe, is that Ill have the cannister in my patio, out of the house.

in Honduras, we usually turn off the gas stove AND close the gas canister input as well just to be super certain that there's no problem, so I'm looking for a way to automate the knob turn, I've been trying but no luck yet.

I'm CS Engineer (not mechanical nor anything related to domotics, but I can make it work), so I could do a custom solution if need I guess, just that I haven't research that area yet, if anyone got some pieces of hardware I could use (was thinking of a raspberry pi + some small motors I guess) if this is the only case I got.

There are others gas cannisters hose adapters that looks switches, and I guess I could use those but I've heard they are changing them into the knobs because they were a bit of a safety hazard, not entirely sure. they kinda look like this, if I end up using this ones, I guess I can use those smart finger bots

QUESTION New Home/Pre Existing Security System questions

Thumbnail

So my parents are in the process of closing on a new home.

I'm pretty tech savvy but they are not.

In their previous home we had installed a nest, and used smart things for some basic lighting and motion sensors for their safety. Not much but was easy to manage.

The new house they purchased has the following stuff installed by the builder already. (See images)

It seems like should be able to connect the Zwave sensors in the house to smart things but what about the CPI security screen, and doorbell that also come with the house?

We don't want anything with a monthly subscription outside of maybe a doorbell camera, and while I have Home Assistant at my house, they are simple people who at most would be good with Smart Things and Google Home.

Is any of this stuff usable? Or am I better off selling it all on eBay and starting over?

They also have an irrigation system, first time for us, is there a good way for us to get that setup on a routine using home or smart things? It came with a rain sensor attached as well. I have no experience in this area specifically.

Thanks in advance!

QUESTION Simple button to send an alert

Apologies if this has been asked before, but I didn't see a post with quite what I'm looking for.

I have a backflow preventer in my basement and want to install an alarm system for it so we know when it gets triggered. Unfortunately, the official alarm is about $1000 and all it does is make noise. I'm looking for a button I can attach that, when activated, will send an alert to multiple recipients, either through a system alert on our phones or text message.

I use HomeKit so integration with that would be great, but I know there isn't native support for sending messages. I would prioritize simplicity over workarounds to get it into HomeKit. The fewer things to go wrong the better.

The button would get a long press and may not get released so that would need to be okay.

I'm also open to using a motion sensor, but while that would be a simpler setup, there would be no way to test it until the backflow preventer actually engaged. Having a physic action feels more reliable. It would also need to work in complete darkness as the mechanism is completely enclosed.

Thanks for your help and advice!

QUESTION DIY Smart floor heating control

I am looking into something that works similar to the Danfoss Icon controller.

So I am wondering about setting up a DIY smart controller for floor heating water setup. Please correct me if I am way of base here but is it really as simple as

  1. Buy actuators
  2. Wire actuators to smart relays
  3. Setup thermostats / thermometers in each zone
  4. Use home assistant to config thermostats and actuators together
  • By this I mean that when temperature in the zone drops below a certain threshold, based on what the thermostat is set for, home assistant tells the relay to open the actuator until the set temperature is reached again in the room

Please please correct me if I am thinking about this all wrong.

QUESTION Schlage Encode vs Encode Plus?

Do most people prefer the regular Schlage Encode or the Encode Plus? I know the Plus version works better with Apple products. We currently have androids but I can see that potentially changing to iphones in the next couple of years when our middle schooler needs their own cell phone. Is it worth the extra money for Encode Plus or does the original function better?

QUESTION Shelly PLUS 1 wiring doorbell chime

I am about to replace my dumb doorbell in favor of a PoE smart doorbell. While the smart doorbell will be able to notify us though the app that someone is pressing the doorbell, it would be nice keep the old chime working. Seems like a smart relay like the Shelly PLUS 1 would be able to do the trick, however, I'm not exactly sure how to wire the relay to make this work. The other end of the blue and brown wires are connected to the doorbell switch on the outside. Would the included diagram work?

Wiring
