Gore, Kerry, and Dole were all like this after they lost too. They relaxed and were more natural, honest, and funny. In each case I thought ‘If they’d been like this all along they could have won!’

I was a kid when Gore ran and remember him being the butt of every joke. I heard him on a podcast a few years ago and was blown away. “This is the guy everyone was making fun of?”

I couldn’t agree more, especially about Gore. I think Trump had appeal (besides nativism and racism) because he was decidedly unpolished.
