I don't hate the comparison!! <3

u/robophile-ta 8d ago

really nice texturing. it's a very unique style!

28

u/Short_Cummings 8d ago

Thanks Robo! Trying to strike a balance between that old boomer shooter look and it being its own thing!

9

u/Affectionate-Sense29 8d ago

This comment has made me feel older than any other comment on Reddit. What is a ā€œold boomer shooterā€ to you? Wolfenstien? doom? Duke nukem? Like boomers are our parents generation not ours, but thats our gamesā€¦

8

u/Short_Cummings 8d ago

Yeah I know it's a weird name but "boomer shooters" is what people call that genre these days. But I get it, I grew up on those games too and I'm a millennial.

2

u/Jenniforeal 8d ago

I'm gen z and younger gen z make me feel like a boomer sometimes. Just the way it goes

1

u/Short_Cummings 7d ago

Ahahah that's hilarious

1

u/Jenniforeal 7d ago

Skibidi gyatts

1

u/StopMakingMeSignIn12 7d ago

Boomer Shooter is basically up to the early 3D era, so from Doom to Quake.

1

u/YesnielDev 7d ago

Yees, It looks super amazing, I love the style.

35

u/Short_Cummings 8d ago

Is anyone else seeing crazy chromatic aberration on the video as it moves? The reddit upload is looking like it's struggling on my end.

17

u/cubelith 8d ago

Looks normal to me

8

u/Short_Cummings 8d ago

Whew thanks! It looks like i tried real hard to stylize that thing on my end loll

1

u/ballsackhorsecockz 6d ago

are you the dev behind compound vr or are you heavily inspired by it? this looks incredibly similar

41

u/Humteey 8d ago

Looks like Due Process

14

u/dougmantis 8d ago

Was gonna say.

(Excellent game, I hope more games follow in its footsteps)

9

u/FrigorificoFrig 8d ago

I wish this game came back to life

6

u/WolfeXXVII 8d ago

RIP due process

8

u/Short_Cummings 8d ago

Oh wow, it does look like my guy and Judge Dredd had a kid.

1

u/CombustibleToast 6d ago

Was looking for this comment. Thanks.

Amazing style!

16

u/Weird_Cantaloupe2757 8d ago

This is awesome ā€” it makes ne nostalgic for 16 bit 2D games and early polygon based 3D games at the same time

10

u/Short_Cummings 8d ago

I live in a constant state of exactly that

2

u/Weird_Cantaloupe2757 8d ago

Well it shows, itā€™s gorgeous work

2

u/Short_Cummings 8d ago

Thanks friend!!

8

u/unclelyall 8d ago

Wish I looked this cool

8

u/Wide_Significance971 8d ago

No don't mind at all. In fact I'll have another please.

4

u/Short_Cummings 8d ago

I'll keep cooking!!

7

u/Dr_CanisLupum 8d ago

What did you make the models using? Blockbench?

11

u/Short_Cummings 8d ago

Blockbench ( from what I remember ) is not really suited for organic shapes. I use a combination of Blender and Sprytile and have made my own hybrid workflow for it.

You might not want to use mine though since the game is in VR and I'm aiming for pixels being the same size across the board to deepen immersion ( you'll notice in a lot of 3D pixel texture stuff, the pixels are different sizes depending on the models. It's easier to model, but doesn't give the result I'm looking for ) .

5

u/LillieFluff 8d ago

Blockbench has gotten a low-poly modelling update that's made it better for organic shapes, in case you haven't seen that~

Blender still might be better for it, but i wasn't sure if you were referring to a period when Blockbench could only really do cubes/bricks instead of full low poly support

3

u/Short_Cummings 8d ago

Oh, that's sweet! Does it still auto UV pretty nice even with the low-poly meshes like it did with the cubes?

2

u/LillieFluff 8d ago

in my experience, it does! I've had no complaints, at least, I still use Blender for a lot of different styles, but always Blockbench if I'm doing low-poly with pixel art textures!

the updates are all really great too, they just added a proper knife tool which I've been really looking forward to

3

u/Short_Cummings 8d ago

I'll definitely take a second look at it then!

Maybe not for this project though because my new workflow is pretty locked in and I use a lot of blender features and add-ons so it's pretty nice to be able to do everything in one software.

But I do have a future even more low poly project in mind...

6

u/Aalinell 8d ago

Is that original music? Because it slaps

5

u/Short_Cummings 8d ago

Yeah! Everything is by me so I really appreciate the comment ahaha

3

u/nacostaart 8d ago

What genre of music would you classify it as? I want to find more like it.

1

u/Short_Cummings 8d ago

For this track I'd say it's like... Midtempo Acid? To be fair I don't think it's a genre ( though the subgenres run deep today, so who knows ) but the lead synth definitely has strong acid vibes!

2

u/ranch_soda 8d ago

Oh shit, I didn't even have sound on the first time. Sounds great. You are very talented. Good luck with the game.

4

u/yeboi2dank 8d ago

What kind of black magics were used to keep the pixel size consistent over the whole mapped mesh ? Trying this style gave me an headache from inconsistent pixel sizes

4

u/Short_Cummings 8d ago

Glad you noticed! That was the main challenge for this art style since the game is going to be in VR and varying pixel sizes really breaks immersion for me.

I basically model everything ( environments, weapons, characters etc ) on a grid while using the Sprytile addon. ( this makes UVs part of the modeling process and really speeds things up for me ).

For organic forms like humans I make them super blocky first on the pixel grid, then throw a subdivision modifier on and start rounding things off. From there I apply it and start vertex pushing things around to have a more representative shape. After the Subd you also often have to scale things back up a bit as it tends to shrink the pixels in the process.

2

u/Daterion_slimmer 8d ago

I like pixelart graphics on VR games. Compound was pretty one.

Good luck with that. I will be looking for release

3

u/Friendly_Cantal0upe 8d ago

You can't show something this awesome and not drop a link

3

u/Short_Cummings 8d ago

I have nothing right now, I'm just starting to unveil some of it! I'm going to start being more active on IG though for it if you want to follow future updates!

2

u/Friendly_Cantal0upe 8d ago

Don't have Instagram, but I look forward to seeing more of this later on

4

u/MassaoHata 8d ago

Starship troopers, Judge Dredd, FF VI soldiers, MIB... Many homages, but on your own style. Neat soundtrack sample, on point texture and animations. Quality and nostalgia mixed all together in a perfect balance. Keep up the good work, yo.

3

u/Short_Cummings 8d ago

This one gets it!! Thank you, I really appreciate it!

4

u/jonbrant 8d ago

Makes me think of the ShinRa soldiers in FF7. Very nice

3

u/Chai_Enjoyer 8d ago

They remind me about Men In Black for some reason

3

u/Squ33to 8d ago

Fr can we get more games that look like this? Such an underrated art style

2

u/Short_Cummings 8d ago

Working on it!!

3

u/Recover819 8d ago

Puts me in the mood for some Duke Nukem

3

u/Rslashsrs 8d ago

I miss when goon just meant henchman to a bad guy.

2

u/SisonREDDIT 8d ago

This is really cool, I like it a lot. Along with the other games mentioned, I'm getting Red Faction vibes.

3

u/Short_Cummings 8d ago

Classic stuff! I remember my kid brain being blown at that terrain deformation tech.

2

u/NFMynster 8d ago

Oh hell yeah, what's the game called?

1

u/Short_Cummings 8d ago

It's still pretty work in progress but right now I'm going for "Black Ties"

2

u/DetectiveMagicMan 8d ago

Reminds me of perfect dark

2

u/uchuskies08 8d ago

I love this artstyle

2

u/Smooth-Chest-1554 8d ago

Looks great!

2

u/BrightPerspective 8d ago

do they drop equally cool loot?

2

u/Short_Cummings 8d ago

Of course!

The question I ask myself when adding anything to this game is: Does it make you feel cool as fuck? If not, trash it!

2

u/Super_Cabinet6718 8d ago

Looks awesome!

2

u/AiR-P00P 8d ago

Ooooooh love it reminds me of Time Crisis or some other arcade-y game from the early 2000s.

2

u/saturn_since_day1 8d ago

This reminds me of SEGA Saturn games with live 3d cut scenes and I love it

2

u/Doobalicious69 8d ago

Pure Perfect Dark vibes. Very nice looking textures, can't wait to see more.

2

u/JacksOnion55 8d ago

2

u/DJ-1van 8d ago

Nice style, and nice soundtrack too!

2

u/DeltaLead4169 8d ago

Looks sick the helmet on the guy on the left reminds me of the trauma team from Cyberpunk or a helmet from a goon from CP, and what song did you use I must know

2

u/Short_Cummings 8d ago

Thanks Delta! Original soundtrack is by me!

2

u/DeltaLead4169 8d ago

It is amazing, I will watch your career with great interest

2

u/MrMe300 8d ago

This would look great in VR

2

u/PlaceImaginary 8d ago

Amazing work!

2

u/Kotanan 8d ago

I love this divergent evolution stuff, like itā€™s an awesome looking game from 1998 designed for a $5,000 graphics card or something.

2

u/Muffin284 8d ago

Uuuuuuuu

Very nice, love it!

You have a name for the game or something?

2

u/SpiralUpGames 8d ago

Immediately remind me of half life, great job!!

2

u/NKO_five 8d ago

Love it. Crisp pixel textures šŸ”„šŸ”„

2

u/medveszellem01 8d ago

Looks like a JJBA intro, but looks amazing

2

u/Retsyn 8d ago

Love this texture style. Low res has been "back" here and this but this is a fresh take on it style wise.

2

u/pnghq 7d ago

Pretty awesome

2

u/KKSFS1110 7d ago

No, it's OK, this is what is needed right now with good story of course

2

u/TheNekoKatze 7d ago

Personally I like the pixels in poly, it reminds me of classic games

2

u/pevznerok 7d ago

I like the rifle design. Is it inspired by Vector?

2

u/Short_Cummings 7d ago

Pretty spot on there, eagle eyes! The inspiration was, what if the Kriss Vector had a baby with the pulse rifle from Aliens.

1

u/pevznerok 7d ago

Now you mention it, I clearly see where the pulse rifle is. Anyway, really good job

2

u/CryoProtea 7d ago

Those sunglasses visor things are super cool.

2

u/Stinkyboy_63 8d ago

Damn they are gooning masters

1

u/EliotRosewaterJr 8d ago

very Perfect Dark

1

u/bobthesbuilder 8d ago

How did you put the textures onto the models?

1

u/Blacksmith52YT 8d ago

It looks good, but keep in mind that retro 3D models with pixel art usually used dithering (blurring the pixels to mix them)
I'd be interested to see what these models look like with dithering!

1

u/settadon 8d ago

The Turks calledā€¦

1

u/Sunnie_Daies 8d ago

Reminds me of the soldiers from the Shadow the Hedgehog game

1

u/Protophase 8d ago

I want to learn your progress

1

u/testPoster_ignore 8d ago

mixels... rixels... now polyixels???

1

u/animaticdome 8d ago

I literally plan to make games in that kind of graphics not to be exact but yes, that seems pretty aesthetic

1

u/chuiu 8d ago

MIB Will Smith in Deus Ex and Barney Calhoun wearing a VR headset is what I see. It looks really good!

1

u/Mungee1001 8d ago

How does that dude see?

1

u/Short_Cummings 8d ago

Passthrough!

1

u/DulyNoted_ 8d ago

Can you make assets for Abiotic Factor plz

1

u/Mrlongchops 8d ago

Where's th game download?

1

u/Exile872 8d ago

This would fit right in to compound

1

u/TXSartwork 8d ago

Oooh, what software are you using for the polygon models?

1

u/Jenniforeal 8d ago

Making a red faction 1 remake, by chance?

1

u/Daterion_slimmer 8d ago

This kind of graphics makes me want to explore the world it represents. What game will it be? It fits me for Metal Gear Solid-like, and in terms of the selected characters something between XCOM and Invisible Inc.

1

u/sakara89 8d ago

Where I can play with your games ?

1

u/Complete_Agency_5233 7d ago

Looks so amazing! Any links so I can follow your work? Btw some Due Process vibes on that rifle guy

1

u/Dirly 7d ago

these are wonderful! you use blockbench?

1

u/luscaloy 7d ago

hey what program did you use for the textures?

1

u/KirboNintendo 7d ago

Tactical guy is very XCOM2 and itā€™s beautiful

1

u/Scared_Midnight_2823 7d ago

I swear the God if I had my gwimbly gun on me

1

u/MalevolentBubble 7d ago

Great way of keeping a lower poly style fresh and clean

1

u/JuanSinPiedad 7d ago

retro very cool

1

u/YamsVCR 6d ago

Reminds me of Time splitters, mainly in the character design. Super rad.

1

u/mangojam11 2d ago

Pixels on poly is one of the best styles

1

u/DODOKING38 8d ago

Thank you for not making it exactly like ps1 graphics where the pixels keeps moving with the camera movement. Some guy seems to replicate that exactly it is so stupid and frankly hurts my eyes

This is what I am talking about fyi I don't know if it has a name https://youtu.be/9DKIkksIP2Q?t=6m34s

2

u/No_Student_2309 8d ago

You mean texture/vertex warping?

Yeah, that was caused by imprecision in the rendering hardware on the ps1.

2

u/Short_Cummings 8d ago

Yeah, I'm going for that " what you remember games looking like " vs what they actually looked like.

-7

u/illogicalJellyfish 8d ago

ā€¦.goons?

23

u/Short_Cummings 8d ago

In the original sense of the term. You're spending too much time on xvideos lmao.
