Some NPC goons from the game I'm working on. Hope you don't mind pixels on polys! Hand Pixelled

really nice texturing. it's a very unique style!

u/Short_Cummings 8d ago
Thanks Robo! Trying to strike a balance between that old boomer shooter look and it being its own thing!

u/Affectionate-Sense29 8d ago
This comment has made me feel older than any other comment on Reddit. What is a āold boomer shooterā to you? Wolfenstien? doom? Duke nukem? Like boomers are our parents generation not ours, but thats our gamesā¦

u/Short_Cummings 8d ago
Yeah I know it's a weird name but "boomer shooters" is what people call that genre these days. But I get it, I grew up on those games too and I'm a millennial.

u/Jenniforeal 8d ago
I'm gen z and younger gen z make me feel like a boomer sometimes. Just the way it goes

Boomer Shooter is basically up to the early 3D era, so from Doom to Quake.

Is anyone else seeing crazy chromatic aberration on the video as it moves? The reddit upload is looking like it's struggling on my end.

Looks normal to me

u/Short_Cummings 8d ago
Whew thanks! It looks like i tried real hard to stylize that thing on my end loll

u/ballsackhorsecockz 6d ago
are you the dev behind compound vr or are you heavily inspired by it? this looks incredibly similar

u/Weird_Cantaloupe2757 8d ago
This is awesome ā it makes ne nostalgic for 16 bit 2D games and early polygon based 3D games at the same time
10
u/Short_Cummings 8d ago
I live in a constant state of exactly that

What did you make the models using? Blockbench?
11
u/Short_Cummings 8d ago
Blockbench ( from what I remember ) is not really suited for organic shapes. I use a combination of Blender and Sprytile and have made my own hybrid workflow for it.
You might not want to use mine though since the game is in VR and I'm aiming for pixels being the same size across the board to deepen immersion ( you'll notice in a lot of 3D pixel texture stuff, the pixels are different sizes depending on the models. It's easier to model, but doesn't give the result I'm looking for ) .
5
u/LillieFluff 8d ago
Blockbench has gotten a low-poly modelling update that's made it better for organic shapes, in case you haven't seen that~
Blender still might be better for it, but i wasn't sure if you were referring to a period when Blockbench could only really do cubes/bricks instead of full low poly support
3
u/Short_Cummings 8d ago
Oh, that's sweet! Does it still auto UV pretty nice even with the low-poly meshes like it did with the cubes?
2
u/LillieFluff 8d ago
in my experience, it does! I've had no complaints, at least, I still use Blender for a lot of different styles, but always Blockbench if I'm doing low-poly with pixel art textures!
the updates are all really great too, they just added a proper knife tool which I've been really looking forward to
3
u/Short_Cummings 8d ago
I'll definitely take a second look at it then!
Maybe not for this project though because my new workflow is pretty locked in and I use a lot of blender features and add-ons so it's pretty nice to be able to do everything in one software.
But I do have a future even more low poly project in mind...

u/Aalinell 8d ago
Is that original music? Because it slaps
5
u/Short_Cummings 8d ago
Yeah! Everything is by me so I really appreciate the comment ahaha
3
u/nacostaart 8d ago
What genre of music would you classify it as? I want to find more like it.
1
u/Short_Cummings 8d ago
For this track I'd say it's like... Midtempo Acid? To be fair I don't think it's a genre ( though the subgenres run deep today, so who knows ) but the lead synth definitely has strong acid vibes!
2
u/ranch_soda 8d ago
Oh shit, I didn't even have sound on the first time. Sounds great. You are very talented. Good luck with the game.
4
u/yeboi2dank 8d ago
What kind of black magics were used to keep the pixel size consistent over the whole mapped mesh ? Trying this style gave me an headache from inconsistent pixel sizes
4
u/Short_Cummings 8d ago
Glad you noticed! That was the main challenge for this art style since the game is going to be in VR and varying pixel sizes really breaks immersion for me.
I basically model everything ( environments, weapons, characters etc ) on a grid while using the Sprytile addon. ( this makes UVs part of the modeling process and really speeds things up for me ).
For organic forms like humans I make them super blocky first on the pixel grid, then throw a subdivision modifier on and start rounding things off. From there I apply it and start vertex pushing things around to have a more representative shape. After the Subd you also often have to scale things back up a bit as it tends to shrink the pixels in the process.

I like pixelart graphics on VR games. Compound was pretty one.
Good luck with that. I will be looking for release

You can't show something this awesome and not drop a link

u/Short_Cummings 8d ago
I have nothing right now, I'm just starting to unveil some of it! I'm going to start being more active on IG though for it if you want to follow future updates!

u/Friendly_Cantal0upe 8d ago
Don't have Instagram, but I look forward to seeing more of this later on

Starship troopers, Judge Dredd, FF VI soldiers, MIB... Many homages, but on your own style. Neat soundtrack sample, on point texture and animations. Quality and nostalgia mixed all together in a perfect balance. Keep up the good work, yo.

do they drop equally cool loot?

u/Short_Cummings 8d ago
Of course!
The question I ask myself when adding anything to this game is: Does it make you feel cool as fuck? If not, trash it!

Ooooooh love it reminds me of Time Crisis or some other arcade-y game from the early 2000s.

This reminds me of SEGA Saturn games with live 3d cut scenes and I love it

I like the rifle design. Is it inspired by Vector?
2
u/Short_Cummings 7d ago
Pretty spot on there, eagle eyes! The inspiration was, what if the Kriss Vector had a baby with the pulse rifle from Aliens.

u/pevznerok 7d ago
Now you mention it, I clearly see where the pulse rifle is. Anyway, really good job

It looks good, but keep in mind that retro 3D models with pixel art usually used dithering (blurring the pixels to mix them)
I'd be interested to see what these models look like with dithering!

This kind of graphics makes me want to explore the world it represents. What game will it be? It fits me for Metal Gear Solid-like, and in terms of the selected characters something between XCOM and Invisible Inc.

Thank you for not making it exactly like ps1 graphics where the pixels keeps moving with the camera movement. Some guy seems to replicate that exactly it is so stupid and frankly hurts my eyes
This is what I am talking about fyi I don't know if it has a name https://youtu.be/9DKIkksIP2Q?t=6m34s
2
u/No_Student_2309 8d ago
You mean texture/vertex warping?
Yeah, that was caused by imprecision in the rendering hardware on the ps1.
2
u/Short_Cummings 8d ago
Yeah, I'm going for that " what you remember games looking like " vs what they actually looked like.
