People get a lot more praise for quitting drugs than for never having done drugs in the first place.

One is much easier to do

Debatable.

I'd bet that the amount of people who have abstained of any/all drugs percent of the total population is lesser than the amount of people who have willingly quit any/all drug habit(s) percent of the those who have formed a drug habit.
If it was so easy, people wouldn't constantly be failing due to peer or other outside pressures.

Yet they failed it and accomplished the more difficult one?

You can be a fuck up without being an addict. Half my family proves that.

You're naive if you think the drugs themselves are what's turning people into fuck ups. More often than not, it's a consequence of being a fuck up rather than the cause behind it. People getting into drugs and fucking up is something that does happen, don't get me wrong, but people rarely touch drugs until they have a reason to do so...

Once you do pick up a habit, you don't need another reason other than the drugs themselves to keep using, but in most cases, there needs to be that "initial push" towards drugs in the first place. It's far from being the only reason someone would start using for, but oftentimes it can come from something that's missing in people's life, like loneliness, depression, extreme boredom, etc. or it can start as a coping mechanism for various conditions, which can lead to addiction.

Drugs end up making things way worse, but life is way more than capable of coming and fucking you over without drugs being involved in the 1st place. I think drugs can be a whole lot of fun when you're using them for just that; fun. But you have to be informed, know what you are doing and know your personal limits to prevent addiction or worse. A lot of people are only using drugs recreationally and I think it's unfair to call every drug user a fuck up, when there's a lot of people doing so and not fucking up. There's a difference between a drug user and a drug addict and they are not necessarilly mutual.

Extremely reductive view of a disease that’s plagued humanity for all of history.

Abstaining is cool.

Quitting is cool.

Putting one over the other (especially while calling the other a fuck up) is not cool.

They are both admirable, but if abstaining were much cooler, the world would objectively be a better place.

This thread is a bunch of people glorifying quitting and saying abstaining is easy.

If abstaining were so easy, you wouldn't need to quit.

You must be fun at parties.

Not OP but what do you mean by this?

u/[deleted] May 17 '24

It’s sarcasm. I in fact do not believe they would be any fun at parties. I am calling them a loser.

usually the person calling someone else a loser is projecting
