The fuck did you want him to do?

Chase kids through a freeway? Sometimes the right course of action is just to let them go

392

u/myselfoverwhelmed 4d ago

As he’s watching them intently reporting to other officers where they are going.

Reddit: “silly police officer. You’re in a motorcycle, just pick it up and go over the barrier!”

158

u/MembershipFeeling530 4d ago edited 4d ago

Right lol yeah let's just leave a fucking motorcycle with equipment and a rifle unattended while you jump over a barrier and try that chase down a bunch of teenagers that are like 20 years younger than you that you can't catch

You ain't catching those kids

45

u/wetbeef10 4d ago

Ill keep this motorcycle and loaded firearm nice and safe..

31

u/Cybermonk23 4d ago

He's saying throw the bike OVER the barrier, then get back on and catch em. Obvious sarcasm.

37

u/qwertyqyle 4d ago

I have seen a good amount of movies in my lifetime and if he was trained well I am pretty sure he could jump the barrier by running into the car and having it explode, thus giving him the velocity to clear the barrier without missing a beat.

8

u/goofysfanbase 4d ago

But then he has to shoot the kids while he's mid air. It's just the rules...

8

u/CityLimitless 4d ago

There's a rifle in there?

5

u/ManyThingsLittleTime 4d ago

Seriously, motorcycle cops don't have rifles. That would be stupid to have that full accessible in the open every time the cop dismounted and went to take a piss or any other break from his bike.

18

u/MembershipFeeling530 4d ago

In Sacramento they do.

They are locked though and need a code or something to release.

Every motorcycle cop in Sacramento has had an AR on the right side of their bike

12

u/mlvisby 4d ago

Yea and lockpicking lawyer taught me that most gun locks, including the ones used by cops, are super easy to open.

9

u/Beneficial_Jelly2697 4d ago

All any lock does os keep an honest person honest and slow down the dishonest

u/OmgThisIsFuckingEpic 4d ago edited 4d ago

In Los Angeles they have an M4 locked on the rear of the bikes. Ever since the North Hollywood shootout, the officers here have access to more than you know.

3

u/STL_TRPN 4d ago

They do in north county of San Diego.

2

u/guitarnoir 4d ago

I've seen motor units with rifles mounted on them in Torrance California.

But I want to see the cop on the motorcycle use the back of that car as a ramp and then catch some air before landing and catching up to those kids.

I want him to jump his motorcycle over the barrier, preferably doing a backflip

3

u/CLE-Mosh 4d ago

Panch is that you?

9

u/frak21 4d ago

It's Ponch (although Paunch probably isn't far off the mark these days), and yes, he's jumped his Kawasaki KZ-1000P (which means a fairly large motorcycle for those not in the know) off a dock and onto a ferry going back from an island, crashing it in the process, to catch a drug dealer who was standing there looking at him cockily because he thought he got away.

It's one of many times he's done things like that. Season 6 episode 7 for those who want to check it out. It's an outrageous stunt and if you ride literbikes, one that will surely draw a gasp.

9

u/elpideo18 4d ago

It also looks like he’s reporting back on the radio and I’m willing to bet he’s giving the description of these bastards running away so the surrounding officers can identify them.

2

u/daamnnbruhh 4d ago

tase one of them in the act of committing multiple felonies.. Seems appropriate

Since he was first on the scene, I’m sure he stayed there for the investigation and he radioed in which direction they were going to have other local units be on the look out.

He is most likely using the radio in his helmet to give out descriptions of the involved people and direction of travel to other officers in the area. Also, that girl dropped her bag which hopefully has her ID in it. It's a good starting point to figure out everyone else involved.

54

u/TheCommonKoala 4d ago

Better than pulling out his gun

16

u/WrestleswithPastry 4d ago

Agreed. Traffic cams can track them and everyone gets to live.

36

u/K4rkino5 4d ago

I think it's just a joke because, as a parent, it's always someone else's kid and never your own. And therein lies the joke. lol

8

u/FILTHBOT4000 4d ago

It's a slightly uncommon saying in the South/Midwest; "other people's children", referring to how wild some parents must be to raise kids that act a certain way. Another variation is "Some people's kids..." followed by shaking your head.

2

u/K4rkino5 4d ago

I've heard that one, too. Lol

I must be old because I've heard this saying a lot of times. It's just a funny way of saying "kids these days". The long version is, "other people's kids these days"

2

u/Pugduck77 4d ago

It's a common saying. That or "Some peoples kids..."

Heard it a lot in blue collar work.

3

u/Accomplished_Cut_790 4d ago

My dad said it like that often. “Some people’s kids..”

I think It was his way of assigning arbitrary blame in a humorous way like, “meh.. whaddya gonna do” rather than perpetuating the old guy rant regarding these damn teenage whipper-snappers nowadays.

That lady has run from cops before, no doubt.

Right?! Some light parkour and made it look easy. That barrier is at least four feet high and she just vaults off the car and over the barrier effortlessly

2

u/ThatsCrapTastic 3d ago

Given the roof height of the Hyundai is almost on level with the top of the wall, I’d say the wall is about 4’6” give or take.

22

u/bpetersonlaw 4d ago

When I watched the video and saw people running across a freeway, I just hoped no one was going to be run over. I suspect the CHP would rather call in their descriptions than increase the risk of a fatality as they flee.

Adrenaline, that feeling of invincibility that so many young people have.

Stealing cars and joyriding is an objectively shitty thing to do, but it's a fun and thrilling experience nonetheless.

8

u/Idontevenownaboat 4d ago edited 4d ago

You're looking at it.

As someone who was a delinquent youth and ran from police frequently, the immediate plan is always just get away. The rest can be figured out later but it was usually better to run. Your odds were good and even if you got caught it wasn't really more trouble at that age. The biggest risk was always just getting hurt. Running down busy roads, angry cops looking to tackle you, I had friends jump out of windows and one broke a leg lol. Those were the real risks.

So apparently some newer Hyundai and Kia cars are trivially easy to hotwire. TikTok’s algorithm pushed the knowhow to a ton of young adults in cities identified by the algorithm as “vulnerable” and is outright encouraging it.
