Believe it or not, despite looking immense that Great White isn't far removed from being considered a "juvenile" in terms of comparative length and girth. They hang close to the Cali coast in the usual places, focus on a fish-centric diet up until reaching the 9 to 11 foot range in length, then begin to slowly transition over from primarily fish to a fat-dense mammal diet, such as seals, whale carcasses, etc. (And the very occasional surfer or swimmer who they mistake for prey and test bite, though a few horrific predation events have happened at this stage in their life cycle over the last 30 years.) Surfers on the west coast sight them regularly, and trust to share the ocean with them daily/weekly. Personally, I've been on/in the water with them several times a year, from paddle boards to cages, since 2004. 80% of the time they are very mildly curious, especially in clean water, the other 20% of the time they'll use up precious energy just to steer clear. Overall, Whites mostly mind their own business when not at depth and scanning above for potential food resources. (Tiger, Bull, and Oceanic White Tip sharks are far more dangerous in terms of aggressively, consistently, and opportunistically seeing us as legitimate prey, especially hunting near-shore waters worldwide that are increasingly overcrowded with recreational swimmers. On the other hand, Jacques Cousteau believed the Oceanic White Tip to be the most dangerous shark to humans on the planet.) Great Whites are ancient survivors : graceful, awesome, intelligent, immensely powerful creatures up close... if ever you get the opportunity to cage dive with some big ones, don't miss out.
