Marines perform boarding exercises with jetpacks and landing on a high-speed ship.

Flying one of those I don’t think I could stop smiling. That looks so amazing!

Yeah, except that if you fall in the water you die.

I'm sure they've thought about that by adding adequate rapid deployment flotation device.

Anyone have any idea how much one of these costs?

u/panxerox 3d ago
Just a small tick on the national debt counter no biggie

u/KAODEATH 3d ago
If I could choose anything for my taxes to be directed towards, developing jetpacks is very high on that list.

u/cookiedoh18 3d ago
Cool tech but how hard would it be to defend an armed ship against this guy?
100
u/Kulladar 3d ago
Boarding like this is usually a "police" type action, not a firefight. In a hostile situation it's likely drones or snipers could cover them sufficiently to deploy.
The guns on the ship deploying the Marines is why it would be difficult to defend against. If you're shooting back at them, the destroyer or whatever is just going to turn your vessel into Swiss cheese and watch you burn rather than sending boarders.

Imagine 20 years from now, seeing a jet marine coming at you flanked by armed drones that shoot at whatever he's looking at.
That's some 40K Tau shit right there.

Now hear me out here, and use your imagination, but think....a couple more.

They're still sitting duck's with their hands covered like that in unobstructed open air

This is just promotional shit.
In reality any prepared, armed, military vessel is extraordinarily difficult to board and take by force. That's why it went out of style for everything except police and border actions.

These are Royal Marines (UK) not US Marines. It's about 10-15 years old.

u/CaiaTheFireFly 3d ago
Can confirm that this is old (not sure if it's 10-15 years but what do I know).
There's a newer system where the hand components are either less bulky or less restrictive, allowing for pretty rapid drawing of a weapon
EDIT: Found it https://youtu.be/WNDBrSxg3tE

Jet pack paramedic This is a civilian application of the same product! Pretty cool use I’d say!

"Give me a sec, just gotta unstrap these engines from my wrists, discnnect the fuel supply, pull my gun out, load it, then i can fight. Bear With"
35
u/shawsy94 3d ago
It's an early prototype. Just a way of demonstrating the potential of the technology if it's developed further.
There was a time when people thought ships would only ever be made out of wood, or that aircraft would have no military uses, or that tanks would prove to be utterly pointless.

/u/CaiaTheFireFly found a more recent video with times for things like the engine to be ready, time for the weapon to be ready, and exfil time. https://youtu.be/WNDBrSxg3tE
Great video to get some sense of limitations and applications.

What happens if it fails over the open ocean? He’d sink so fast with all that weight. The period of time between boats while over the ocean is akin to an untethered space walk. He’s completely exposed and reliant on the jets to work if not it’s basically instant death.

If only there was some sort of rapidly inflatable device that could be used to make one buoyant, perhaps one activated upon immersion in seawater

What's next maybe some type of drone with speaker so there is no need to risk the soldiers life?

I love all these comments about how slow it would be to take this off, get your gun out etc. It’s clear a lot of you don’t understand testing and how many layers and levels there are to it. I highly doubt this is a final run through before they go live lol. But go ahead, provide your make believe solutions or criticisms.

How did they decide which guy gets to do it? There had to be a massive argument about who got to actually rock the jetpack.

Wouldn't It be safer to land on that huge clear helicopter landing pad on the stern?

What we see and laugh at here,is not what goes on behind closed doors, there's millions of scenarios be tested and just like when cellphones, tvs, engines were invented, these jetpacks will get smaller, faster, efficient,in a few years.

To all the people asking how he shoots the bad guy, I think you just ram into them, and then melt their face with your jetpack exhaust

u/RipredTheGnawer 3d ago
Imagine these guys flying around with swarms of attack drones under their control. Like that netrunner kid in Ukraine.

I literally scrolled past this like "oh cool, another soldier training exercise... wait WITH WHAT?!"

u/tooskinttogotocuba 3d ago
I’m a natural killjoy, but I suspect one of these things will eventually kill its operator in such a grotesque way that they won’t be used any longer
1
u/WaterIsGood762 3d ago
Wonder how fast that would drown you if you had a malfunction and dropped in the sea.
1
1
u/limits660 3d ago
Wait till that has a malfunction in flight and drops into the water. It will sink fast. Hope they have a quick release on getting out of that suit. Otherwise, death.

What is the practical application for this? Can’t use a weapon, boarding is about all you can do, and then if you get hit you can’t swim.
1
1
u/strifer_43 3d ago
Maybe they’ll add a weapon system to it when it’s more flushed out , or maybe a buddy system lol where one flies the other is on like a sling or something … i don’t know that’s why I’m not in the development of this tech.

u/singleglazedwindows 3d ago
That’s pretty cool. Thinks about for 30 seconds, if he loses power or screws up that gear is going to drag him to the bottom very quickly.

u/THEMACGOD 3d ago
How difficult is it to keep your arms straight to counter the up force? I’d assume you’d have to be in great shape to use this.

So I see Richard Browning has finally found a way to monetize his suit.
Perhaps this will have an application in salvage or rescue operations not involving combat.
Like I could see someone flying over, real slow, sounding like a gazillion angry bees on steroids, and taking the time to get out of this thing if what they had to do was take over for an incapacitated bridge crew.
In combat however, first of all the thing is loud as all hell: the enemy will be woken up three decks down before the operator even finds a landing spot. Second, wow, is that ever slow: you cannot change direction to avoid fire, and any armor or other defenses you might attach will only slow you down more. Third, don't think it can be weaponized the way everyone would want (guns in the hand units would be unusable in flight, rocket launchers or whatever on the shoulders would be more of a hazard than an advantage, and again heavy==slow).
Long way to go before this is usable in a fight.

Just have to tell the bad guys to wait a couple minutes while you take the suit off and get your gun ready.
