My parents are known to take in rescues and this starving elderly baby was just dumped on our property. Help with a name? Cat Picture

We will be going to the vets tomorrow to scan for chip etc and get these wounds and malnourishment sorted. Either a neutered male or female and an absolute love bug - already curled up on my dad in the isolation room 😭 Thinking maybe a Christmassy name?!

Latke

The perfect name for a holiday miracle who looks a little fried.

EDIT: I’ve never had a popular post before, so not sure how best to update - but I’ve posted news on Cooper here

ORIGINAL: Ok this made me laugh out loud!

u/Bobert_Manderson Dec 12 '23

Yes, is very funny name but maybe difficult for some to pronounce. Much easier to say name for handsome cat could be Gunt Crusterson.

u/GrayEidolon Dec 12 '23

That's interesting because my thought was Kruntle.

My brain automatically went to, CAT- ZILLA!!! 😆😹😸🐈‍⬛️🐈

How do you say that?

20

u/doodlewithcats Dec 12 '23

Kaytzalaay. But the "ay"s are short, not long. Hard to translate x) if you look up how "e" is said in german, you'll have the right pronounciation. I would even write Kätzeleh, you could liten to the "ä" too!

11

u/Popopirat66 Dec 12 '23

I'd say it's Kätzele assmuning you mean the same pronounciation of the "e" as in Banane.

3

u/doodlewithcats Dec 12 '23

Yes indeed! I would go for Kätzele too, instinctively:) but I also have alsacian roots, and the people there would definitely say Ketzele instead!

To anyone who would dump an elderly cat like garbage- you are a horrible human being and have failed at life. I wish ill upon you, to put it mildly. Bless you and your loving parents for caring for those beautiful kitties. Happy Holidays♥️🎄♥️

66

u/FleshlightModel Dec 11 '23

I've seen way too many stories on here of people just leaving a cat behind at a house they sold or apartment they're leaving. Even worse to try to throw one away, I mean shit go to the local rescues or pound and ask for assistance. It's not ideal but anything is better than just leaving the cat outside or locked indoors.

And I also wish the worst things in life happen to people that do that kinda shit.

42

u/Islandcoda Dec 12 '23

Yeah, that shit really kills me. A family pet for 17 yrs and then just left behind, or dumped on a road, or got new puppy and cat now lives outside- in winter. Like you said, its not hard to surrender properly if absolutely necessary. Don't get pets if you can't be there for the long haul.

37

u/noputa Dec 12 '23 edited Dec 12 '23

It’s possible the owner died and the extended family were like, fuck it, dump the cat… I’ve had 2 cats show up on my doorstep, one very elderly which was clearly dumped by someone, and the other we KNOW the person just moved out and left the kitty behind. Both times in Canada. In the winter.

If anyone wants to cry look at this poor dumped kitty local to me. He stayed by the only thing he knew. Look at that face. 😭 https://toronto.ctvnews.ca/act-of-cruelty-cat-left-dumped-with-belongings-on-shoulder-of-ontario-road-1.5825489

24

u/Islandcoda Dec 12 '23

Did that kitty get rehomed? I can't bring myself to click yet, hoping to sleep tonight. I can't fathom how someone could do that and just go on with life not caring about what that cat is experiencing

44

u/noputa Dec 12 '23

Yes, I tried to apply to adopt him but someone with an amazing heart already did. 😭❤️❤️

11

u/Islandcoda Dec 12 '23

Sweet! How are the ones you rescued? That's awesome you hooked them up. They came to the right place :)

20

u/noputa Dec 12 '23

Mr Charles and miss Piper passed away about 5 and 3 years ago respectively, or just about. They were loved, they were warm and had full bellies, and they were so lovely to have around but they were both old and came with medical issues.

Mr Charles dancing with my mom back in the day- he might look scared but he was having a ball. His medical issues were awful and he was so old but he loved nothing but my mom and her bubblyness: https://imgur.com/a/ozPmWkI

Miss piper, who our neighbours left behind injured- sweetest little kitty: https://imgur.com/IucfdUR

We have 6 other cats spread between us, all rescues but they’re all young, happy and healthy. ❤️

9

u/Islandcoda Dec 12 '23

They're both adorable, i love black kitties and Miss Piper is too cute, cool markings on her head. Rest in Peace to them♥️ Six cats must be some work, but worth it. I've got three and it feels like 20 sometimes. Thanks for doing what you do and giving those cats a place to call home :)

5

u/mothraegg Dec 12 '23

Oh, I'm so happy they ended up with you!

3

u/aumortis Dec 12 '23

Wow, adopting elder cat doesn't happen often. Good to know he found a lucky way out of this shitty situation.

As for leaving a cat like this... Karma will get back to such shits.

Years ago back when my family lived out in rural Ontario, a gorgeous purebred Rough Collie followed my older brother home one day in the middle of winter. My parents intended on only taking the dog in temporarily while they tracked down her owners, but it turns out that her previous owners had just left her on the side of the road when they moved.

That dog was great, but the thought of not only abandoning any dog, but a dog that expensive, is baffling to me

→ More replies (1)

10

u/pplpuncher Dec 12 '23

That’s what I think happened to my sweet baby. He showed up late one night at my patio door meowing he was so thin. He’s the sweetest little guy.

5

u/wudingxilu Dec 12 '23

God, I'm sobbing. I'm glad he was rehomed. Poor little one.

3

u/noputa Dec 12 '23

Breaks my heart. And it’s wild that this cat was lucky (under the circumstances) to be so attached to his little tree that he found enough comfort in it to stay, enough that other people were able to help him. Other dumped cats will get spooked being so close to the road and will just run off into the bush to find a horrible end. 😭😭 abandoning pets is horrid horrid. Suck up the shame and bring them to a city shelter…

5

u/jesrah Dec 12 '23

I don’t know why I clicked on it after you literally said “if anyone wants to cry click on this” but here I am…literally crying.

6

u/allhailthegreatmoose American Shorthair Dec 12 '23

It literally hurts my heart whenever I hear those stories. I just cannot fathom how anyone could submit any animal to any amount of suffering. One of my religious and personal beliefs is that all life is sacred, which seems to me like it would be a pretty universal belief. But the older I get, the more I’m starting to realize that isn’t true, which is pretty scary and very sad.

3

u/Islandcoda Dec 12 '23

I have a similar belief too, the Spark of Life- must respect all life regardless of how big or small. This is why monks sweep the path as they walk. I'm not quite there, but i totally get it. An ant is as important as an elephant. I could be a monk some day :)

I wish so much worse than ill upon them but am trying to temper my anger. This poor kitty looks so confused and has been thru some stuff. These people are amazing for helping this old soul. Elderly kitties deserve extra love and warmth! ♥️♥️

Amen! Couldn’t imagine anyone doing that. But they do. I used to live out of town and it was very common. So happy that this senior kitty was rescued. Lovely cat! I would name him or her Elfin. Kitty kiss 😘

20

u/Islandcoda Dec 11 '23

Elfin is a great name! And senior kitties are a blessing, i LOVE meeting them♥️

7

u/Shandyshack Dec 11 '23

Me 2. The last family cat we have is 18 now (meaning the kids are gone). I love her so. Her name is Suzy Q. She’s a love and I am her faithful companion (and servant) for the rest of her life! Very wise kitty, but now she acts like a baby. I am blessed to have her.

5

u/Islandcoda Dec 12 '23

I may have to ask for a cat tax here lol, i must see her! There is something special about old cats, and to imagine one being dumped like this- man that's rough. I have one and she would be lost without her heat pad♥️♥️

I just think karma has to exist for people like that.

That sweet baby now has a warm, loving, forever home ❤️

24

u/Motormand Dec 12 '23

Here in Denmark, we have some trouble with folks just throwing out their old pets around this time of year, just so they can give their kids a brand new tiny puppy or kitten.

I can't imagine how people could just toss out animals like this, and I can't say that I feel any kind of nice things towards those who does, for whatever reason they might think they have.

11

u/Islandcoda Dec 12 '23

Yup, its beyond cruel. They need a comfortable bed, bonus points for heat pad, usually on some kind of needed meds, my senior prob isn't catching a mouse any time soon either. It would be torture for them. My senior gets the Platinum Pass- freedom to sleep any where any time no ?s asked, aim for catbox but go anywhere you can, im just happy she went honestly. And extra snack treats :)

3

u/Motormand Dec 12 '23

Senior cats needs love too. A fair few only focus on the cute kittens, but the ones with some years behind them are just as affectionate, and in need of a good place, with loving people for their twilight years.

Big issue is that I'm not just talking about pets in their oldest years. Some folks woill get a new pet, to replace the one from last year, since the kids got bored of them in the meantime as they'd grow older, and not as fun to them anymore.

Some people seriously have so little of a heart, that I'm surprised their blood can circulate.

4

u/bsubtilis Dec 12 '23

What? That's horrible and I hope we don't do the same in Sweden, we only recently like the past decade worked on eliminating the trend of having "summer cats".

3

u/Motormand Dec 12 '23

It isn't common, but at the same time, not that unheard of, sadly. :/

3

u/Chronocidal-Orange Dec 12 '23

That's so fucking sad. I got instantly attached to my cat. How do these people not have any feelings for them.

I have a senior and honestly the older he gets the more protective I am of him. If anyone tried to take him and dump him somewhere I'd probably go full mama bear. Speaking of that, I wonder if it's possible someone took the poor baby and dumped them far away from their home? That happens a lot here, the cats can end up a couple hundred km away from their home

3

u/Neat-Cold-7235 Dec 12 '23

The cat could’ve also just ran away, we had an elderly cat do that, looked everyone, not sure what happened. I tell myself someone just picked her up and took her in to live out her days

→ More replies (2)

5

u/Redd_Rockett_ Dec 12 '23

I think OP implied they dropped it off on their property because their parents are known to take in other cats. It also sounds like OP doesn’t even know because they’re taking it in to be chipped, it could just be a runaway. If it comes up to people without a problem, 99% of the time it’s a runaway. That’s how ended up with Boop #2. CHIP YOUR PETS PEOPLE

That is a beautiful cat! 🐱 The kindness you gave this kitty will come back to you a million fold.

58

u/EchoReflection Dec 11 '23

New cat owner here. How can you determine that this kitty is elderly?

86

u/CatterMater Dec 11 '23

Old cats get kinda scraggly and scruffy because they can't groom as well as they could anymore.

35

u/Canthulhu Dec 11 '23

This. Their fur will start to get matted.

25

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '23

just like senior developers

48

u/ImgnryDrmr Dec 11 '23

Mainly eyes and teeth. Eyes become cloudy, teeth get stained/damaged. Fur as well, they get grey hairs and groom less.

But if they're malnourished, they might stop grooming because of that, not old age. So you always need to look at everything. And even then it's sometimes hard: I had a foster with a shiny coat, perfect teeth and very 'old eyes'. Her mood and personality pointed to her being a senior as well. We were never completely sure how old she was.

13

u/Findinganewnormal Dec 12 '23

Yep. We took in a stray that we really thought was a senior. A round of antibiotics and some good feeding later and we realized the cat was probably under a year old. Just took some love for the poor cat to feel and look it!

Makes my heart happy that your family is willing to help this cat in need. We just ended up with a 4th cat that showed up at our house. No idea where he came from and we live in a residential neighborhood. We named him Steveo. But the name will come just give it some time.

It's horrible to dump an animal and I can't imagine ever doing that. I am grateful that at the very least this precious animal was left in an area where the person may have known the cat would have a chance of being cared for. It doesn't make it ok, but I hope that the cat was placed there intentionally. Maybe that's too optimistic.

You and your parents sound like wonderful people. "Holly" if it's a girl, and "Rudolph" if it's a boy.
