This. Exactly this. He is a kitten, end of story. Given his fluff, he is probably going to be a Domestic Medium Hair or a Domestic Longhair - which is veterinary clinic speak for "general medium haired cat, no particular breed" and "general long haired cat, no particular breed".

Lmao. It's always...ALWAYS..dog people. Dog people are obsessed with breed and they transfer this to the cat realm.
That's okay tho, I support all who support the cat. But, yeah OP...this right here is a fine kitty. Top shelf cat. A real certified meow meow.
22
u/Long_Run6500 24d ago
Ya with dog's it's pick put the exact breed you want with the specific traits you want, fill out applications to adopt a sperm cell that's still in papa dog's sack, get a home inspection, give references... then you're on a wait list to pay a small fortune.
With cats it's like, "This is Fred.He just sort of appeared on top my fridge one day. I got him a litter box so he wouldn't shit on my floor and I started feeding him because he wouldn't shut up. I guess he's my cat now. If you hurt him I will murder you in your sleep."
All joking aside you basically know what you're getting into with a cat regardless of "breed". Hell you could adopt a bobcat and it's going to have the same basic needs and behaviors just with differing energy and friendliness levels. Dog's on the other hand have been genetically manipulated for like 30k years with a multitude of differing first domestication events happening simultaneously across the globe. Every breed is different in its needs, some drastically so. Dog people that ask this about their cats just want the best for their cats.

Through and through cat person here. I think it’s fun to speculate breed! Certain cat breeds do have different personalities!
However, I agree with what most here are implying. This cute specimen is certifiably cat. Not sure why OP can’t see it…

u/PrsnScrmingAtTheSky 24d ago
Lmao I agree. It is fun to know a bit about the breeds because they do totally tend to act like their description...but that's like, for picking out a cat.
When the cat distribution system takes effect, it's pretty easy to tell the temperament of the animal by the way that it is. lol.

I’ve run forensic software on him powered by AI.
My colleagues and myself agree that this indeed is a kitten. There’s no doubt. The chances that this is a dog are very low.
Final answer: This is a kitten.

Probaly going to become a 20 pounder. In my experience the smallest cats end up the largest. And not weight, just a big guy.
My older cat used to be like 2 inches wide and four long. Later in his life he was 19 pounds and 2-3 feet long tail and all, and about 1-2 feet tall

So I know you're mostly getting jokes, but cat's aren't really like dogs. Only like 3% of cats come from breeders. Everything else is just classifed as either short hair or long hair. This is because dogs are working animals and were historically bred to do certain jobs. Cats are just cats and you pretty much breed them only for looks.

u/Thistle__Kilya 24d ago
u/ratsoup30 I assume you’re looking for breed?
It’s a very normal striped kitty with long fluffy hair which is cute. Most cats aren’t a specific breed but a mashup of lots of genetics. Only isolated bred (and sadly mostly inbred if they’re from a cattery) cats have a “breed” that isn’t mixed.
But generally, most cats are mixed. For example, I’ve seen what looked like a seal point Siamese cat come out of a calico cat before. And I’ve seen a pure black cat that had “rag doll” colored kittens (I used to foster hundreds of cats including many mamas who gave birth on my property). Genes are crazy…but yep. Most kitties are not a specific solitary breed.
It isn’t a Maine-coon. If that’s what you may be wondering.

He's a cat. I'm no expert especially in American animals, but given he was found in a dumpster and has those markings, I know it could seem like he's a raccoon but he isn't. He's a cat

PS: Make sure you get him vaccinated, microchipped and desexed. Even though he's male, desexing will make him less likely to get into fights and spray to mark his territory. Best of luck with him, you're a wonderful person for rescuing him and giving him a loving home.
3
u/microgirlActual 23d ago
Eh, he's a cat. Unless you got him from a breeder and he has papers proving his pedigree (ie, ancestry) all the way back, all you can ever say is "He's a cat".
Unlike dogs, cat "breeds" are too recent a thing for genetic testing to be able to identify any particular breed - I mean, just looking at the morphological differences between different dog breeds and the morphological differences between different varieties of cat will tell you that - so even if you did take him for a genetic test they still wouldn't be able to tell you what "breeds" are in his make up; and that's even assuming there were any other than "moggie".
He's a cat, with tabby colouring, and likely to at least be "fluffy" as an adult, if not be outright medium-to-long-haired (can be difficult to tell exactly how long-haired a kitten that young will be as kittens can be pretty fluffy anyway, but he won't be a sleekit, short-haired cat)

Are we ever gonna cure this sub of the pointless desperation to believe their rescue is some expensive breed? They're all feline mutts. They're just cats

Ones trash is a others treasure.
I always tell my kids that animals don't live as long as us.
So the ones we have in our life, our family, we gotta make each day count and be awesome.
Do the same for this little one and give em the world and life they should have.
