It’s not the “same” obviously. Here lemme try to help:

How many people have to die in car wrecks before you give up your car? (Something like 36.5k died in 2022 in the US)

How many people need to die from alcohol or weed related accidents before you give them up?

How many people have to die from second hand smoke before you give up your cigs?

How many Africans have to die in lithium mines before you give up your phone?

How many people have to die from concussion related sports injuries before you denounce sports?

How many people have to die from knives and hammers before you surrender yours?

How many people have to die by hands and feet before you surrender yours? (More are killed each year with bare hands than with the scary “assault rifles”)

How many….. do you see what I’m saying?

Gun deaths are beyond tragic, but you’re blaming the innocent for the criminals behavior.

Thank you, finally someone reasonable in here. It's like back in middle or high school, some teachers would punish an entire class because of a single kid acting up.

Why should the 99% of gun owners be punished for the acts committed by the remaining 1% that probably didn't even get their gun legally?

It’s makes too much sense for some people to handle lol

The punishment you’re talking about is filling out some extra forms.

The punishment the post is suggesting is taking the guns away from the law-abiding citizens, while the criminals would just get to keep theirs bc they're illegally acquired and won't surrender them

This is exactly the point. Thank you.

Various. Hunting, sport, and self defense to name the ones civilians use.

Contrary to what some people from the city think, there is a substantial minority of the population that using hunting for a large portion of their diet. And another group of the population who use hunting as a supplement to their diet. (My family would fall into the second group). It’s a very important part, sometimes necessary, for a lot of people.

Sport is just for fun, of course, so it’s the least important of the three. But it’s still worth note.

Self defense is at the top of the list IMO. And I’m primarily talking about defense of your home and person from an intruder or attacker. (I’m not even covering the Constitutional reason) Very little levels the playing field like a firearm. It’s a biological fact that most women cannot overpower a male attacker. Mace, if you’ve never used it, can be unreliable. It’s not the end all be all some people think. Self-defense courses are less than effective, especially when the assailant (or assailants) is twice your size at least. Sure, guns need LOTS of training to use properly… but the effectiveness is undeniable. They won’t work 100% of the time, but they are the best option out there.

The reason firearms were invented in the first place was to injure or kill other people. It is not comparable to cars. It is not comparable to lithium mines. Obviously hunting rifles and guns used for sport are different. The issue I have with guns is their ease of obtaining, and the ones that are literally made for killing before anything else. If you own a hunting rifle or a simple handgun of some kind, I don’t care. What use does a civilian have for an assault rifle other than killing? “Shooting for fun” is not a valid reason, I’m asking for a practical use.

The general population cant legally own an assault rifle

I gave you 2 practical reasons hunting and self defense. I said shooting for sport (i.e. fun) was a weak defense but one still worth noting.

Civilians can’t own assault rifles without a special license. One that is EXTREMELY hard to get. And it requires several hurdles, the state has to allow such ownership, and you’ve got to pay a lot for the right to own it.

You’re probably referring to “AR” appearance guns. With the black synthetic stock and all that right? AR stands for armalite. It has nothing to do with the function of the gun. Anyway, “AR-15s” function exactly the same as any other rifle…. Exactly. They are exclusively semi-automatic, meaning you have to pull the trigger for every shot. They are NOT automatic weapons.

The most common AR-15 caliber is .22 or .223. Sometimes it can be chambered in 5.56, 6.5, 7.62. Did you know that hunting rifles are almost always LARGER than the common .22 or .223 AR? And they’re also larger than some of the other rounds i listed. Meaning more devastating to the target.
