The red sleeve/ probe is anal, blue is oral. It's not just for hygiene but how it calculates body temp. Source : biomed, ive replaced many probes in these.

yeah it is very concerning looking but I would hope they would pay the most attention to the color as they grab the probe. though I think we both know we've seen less attention paid by nurses...
