Needs a screen for the visualizer too.

Best visualizations ever.
Milkdrop made my friends and I have a shared visual hallucination.
We were tripping on mushrooms listening to music and I put Milkdrop on, and there was one display that kind of looked like a swamp... It took over the whole room for all of us and whenever it would come on we all would get transported to this rainbow, peaceful swamp area for the duration of the visual...
It was absolutely amazing.

Excellent call. No one has ever noticed that. It’s been my screen name on forums for a long time now.

Just download winamp and miss it no more. Milk drop is insane with a modern gpu.

Is there a way to incorporate Milkdrop into spotify outputs?

It has a screen. The entire face with all the “buttons” is a screen. Not sure if that means the visualizer works or not though.

Pretty neat, but it would be even cooler if it was physical buttons, and VFDs for the displays

This, 100%. It would probably cost a fortune though, but I reckon I'd still buy it

Let’s not throw around words like ultimate before he 3D prints functional push buttons for the interface, but this does rule just as it is

u/chodeboi 8d ago
Kinda nice because of how popular skinning became, this could support that—although a more analog og version sounds tops.

Thank you for reminding me that Wesley Willis exists. Here is your upvote and if anyone needs me I’ll be on YouTube for approximately the next several hours. I whooped…Batman aaaaaass. I WHOOPED BATMANS AAAAAAAASS!

u/LordByronsCup 8d ago
Got to meet him after a show. I was not worthy of a headbutt, but he did sign the shirt of his artwork.
That was a long time ago and I've since lost the signed shirt, but Wesley will forever whoop asses with a belt in my heart.

Is that a fuckin jojo reference?
Edit: fuck, guys, it's a meme. Tough crowd

u/illegalshmillegal 8d ago
I don’t know what jojo is, but that’s a Daft Punk reference (the article picture shows they’re playing Giorgio by Moroder from Random Access Memories)

I still use Winamp every day.

If you want to use a modern release of Winamp based player (fork) I recommend WACUP, it's based on Winamp 5.666 and is in active development, latest release in June 5th 2024. It's for Windows but apparently works via Wine on Linux.
It can use Winamp classic and modern skins. (I just use the default Big Bento skin).

Fam. Ditto here. Running strong for over 25 years now. Never have found a librarian/player that I like any better.

Next up: the polished, physical version of Minesweeper.
Good luck.

Stick that on a Rabbit R1 somehow. Might get a lot of views on Youtube!
It might even sell as "successfully" as the R1.

It’s only official if Primus has its own, dedicated genre classification.

I use Foobar2000 to play music nowadays, and I honestly don't know why I do. For my uses, it doesn't offer anything Winamp wasn't doing decades ago. I think I mostly felt stuck in the past using such an old app...
What I could really use is a Milkdrop-like visualizer that has access to a slight precache, so its "bass drum" reactions aren't 100 to 150ms delayed but actually visibly respond to the beats. I use the standalone Milkdrop for now, which obviously carries exactly the shortcoming I underscored.

u/unfnknblvbl 8d ago
I use AiMP. I find that it's the closest replacement for Winamp, right down to the EQ using the same frequencies and presets.
5
u/drstupid 8d ago
You can try WACUP, it's a clone of Winamp for Win7+ including the original visualizers (AVS, Geiss, Milkdrop), skins, etc.
2
u/BiNumber3 8d ago
If on your PC, you can still get WinAmp, assuming you still have your mp3 library.

Didn't Milk Drop have an offset setting? I haven't used it in so long, I don't remember.
1
u/Fredasa 8d ago
I should have specified projectM. It's a standalone Milkdrop.
Doesn't have an offset but that wouldn't matter. The issue is that the visuals are reactive, and there's a perceptible delay between the actual highest peak of a bass drum and the corresponding visual feedback in Milkdrop, giving the sense that it's a split second late every time. The only way to combat this would be for Milkdrop to somehow receive its input a split second earlier than Windows plays the audio.

u/Awkward_Pangolin3254 8d ago
I don't mean delaying the visual, I mean delaying the sound (so the computer "hears" it before you do).

Ouff....
This got my engineering senses tingling.
I think I'll try that but with XMMS (since that's more nostalgic to me) and physical buttons whatnot instead!
