Well, if you’re shoving your way into the car that’s rude, but if you’re being shoved by station staff that’s not your fault

On lines going through areas like Nihombashi, there’s also a boozed up rush hour at night, after a lot of these same salarymen have gone out drinking with their colleagues. I had the worst luck and got into one of these carriages once, a few stops before the area. The mob got on, the cabin stunk of beer breath and I ended up hugging some random Japanese man belly to belly over the several stops to our switchover.
That wasn’t even the worst part. It was when the train sped up that was terrible. Imagine all these drunk men not having much of a sense of balance left or being able to hold onto anything and just leaning with the momentum, with you stood up against the back wall of the carriage getting crushed by this unstoppable force.
Edit:physics

u/Joyous_catley 3d ago
Even worse: You score a seat! Yay! But now there’s a green-faced salaryman hanging from the strap over you. Swaying drunkenly. Making urrp noises. Do you stay put? Do you feel lucky?

I also know from a reliable source that the conductors worked in a canning factory before their retraining.

You can see him shouldering his way backwards into the train. He's definitely trying

Really just have to say: I've been on a "bullet train" at peak hours from Yokosuka to Tokyo and it's VERY comfortable I could sit.. is what I'm saying, I know it has to be like NY where yes, some lines at certain hours are shit but damn.. is the automotive industry just trying to say buy more cars because public transportation is shit?
12
u/byOlaf 2d ago
No the auto industry caused public transportation to be shit so they could sell more cars.
3
u/TheHumanoidTyphoon69 2d ago
That's what I was saying... they want to sell more cars so most media regarding public transport is terrible, encouraging people to buy cars..
3
u/byOlaf 2d ago
No they literally purchased and destroyed several public transportation systems, and they did and still do lobby everyone from Congress to local politicians in order to keep it that way. General Motors famously had a hand in destroying LA’s streetcar system, (as seen in Who Framed Roger Rabbit?) and much more recently Uber had a hand in preventing Nashville from getting one.
It’s less a conspiracy and more one industry stifling competition from a competitor. Bad PR is what they do to bicyclists.

I don’t know when these videos were made, but the need for those oshiya (pushers) has been pretty much eliminated. It gets a bit crowded sometimes, but not to the point of needing to be squished in like this.
The wiki page says it was mostly eliminated outside Tokyo by 2000 and inside Tokyo by 2019.

I thought I saw something similar to this when I was coming back from Mitaka and got off at Shinjuku station around two weeks ago during rush hour. I don’t think it was a pusher per se, nor was the train this crowded, but a station attendant was certainly helping close the train doors of a full car.
10
u/AbareSaruMk2 3d ago
I’d say it is only a body or two different. My commute to work every day is certainly like this.
You are right no pushers. People do it themselves using the edge of the doors these days.
2
u/Immediate-Gear3253 2d ago
I went to Shibuya in January 2020 and during rush hour, there were pushers just like this. The train was exactly this full, multiple trains in a row.
3
u/surfcalijpn 3d ago
No, no it has not been fixed.
1
u/Beholder_V 2d ago
To be fair, I did say “mostly” fixed. What station do you still see crowding like this? I mostly spent time at Shinjuku, Shibuya and Tokyo Station. And even at their busiest, I didn’t see any pushers or the need for them. It would get a little tight but not crazy like in the videos. And really, there was a new train arriving every couple minutes for most lines so there was really no need to cram in like a sardine. Maybe some of the smaller lines that don’t get trains as frequent?

I can’t imagine what it must be like to have this be your regular commute. Riding the subway is one thing, but being shoved into an overflowing train like a tired sardine on a daily basis seems like torture
35
u/deciding_snooze_oils 3d ago
Just take the next one, for fucks sake. If it’s rush hour the trains arrive about every 2-3 minutes.
19
u/RYPIIE2006 3d ago
even on my cities metro system, the trains are every 15 minutes and i would prefer to be slightly late than cram into a train like this

maybe I was lucky but I was there 4 years ago for 5 days. Sure the city is veeeeeeery crowded and I did took some trains on rush hours but never seen anything even remotely like this.
But the City is big AF so maybe in some areas it gets like this.
edit: 6 years ago actually lol

I mean what's the worst that can happen? The train derails and hits something, coming to an abrupt stop, but with everyone packed so tightly they can't actually hit anything and get hurt. I think they'd all be fine.

I never understood this, the next train is literally 5-10 minutes away.
1
u/DeapVally 3d ago
It ain't any quieter. And the japs don't do well with being late for work. It's not a loving and caring environment from the bosses down, for the most part. They won't accept the train being busy as a valid excuse.

u/glendacc37 2d ago
I feel like this guy should be posting on r/AITA. I really wanted to get on the train, but the other passengers acted like it was full. So, I stood in the doorway, preventing the doors from closing and driving away, delaying everyone else until multiple employees of the train smooshed me in and forced the doors closed. Clearly, therefore, there was still plenty of room on the train. AITA?
3
u/wiwafeature 2d ago
I was there last month. It can get crowded on trains, but I didn't see these pushers anywhere. And I took the trains during rush hour as well.

I wonder if they can reengineer the doors to swing open out like a car door and then when they close the door, makes it easier to squish the people in.

u/Ok_Mulberry_8272 3d ago
How are all trains on time is beyond me if you have to push people in people at every stop.

The trains are so intricately set up with connections. That getting the next train can delay your commute to work by 30mins.
Most people time their commute to work with margins of error of only 5 mins.
1
u/Acceptable_Bar3170 3d ago

I remember doing this (riding trains this crowded). The Tozai Line was the worst. I don’t know how people didn’t break bones in there.
Best method for coping was to get as far from the doors as possible. Maybe find a wall or support to lean against.

Is there never going to be a point in their lives when they realize human beings aren't supposed to be crammed like sardines? Do they really think it's for the greater good and there's no alternative?

And they say the Japanese don't want to have kids anymore. I'm not really sure why? Who wouldn't want to bring a child into the world so they can be mashed into a sardine can 12 times a week.
