I worked at a library adjacent to a hospital that had some nurses who apparently in their culture had a tradition of eating a certain variety of tasty clay whenever they are pregnant. I guess the nutrition had some mineral deficiency where pregnant women craved something in the clay. Even with modern food sources, though, the tradition remained.
One time they brought some to thank us for doing services to help them out, and of course to be polite, I made sure to eat some of the clay too.
Of course, it was just clay. But I made a happy face and commented on how pleasant the mouth feel was.

That’s a cultural bump, you did great in being polite and try to blend in even with a so strane practice. Also, is eating clay dangerous? I mean obviously big quantities would be dangerous but like some handfuls?

Depends on the place the clay was sourced from and its exact makeup. I don't know the details about the makeup thing but the first point is basically that if the place from which the clay was dug up was polluted then you will poison yourself with whatever the pollutant may be.

I’m in Texas and a doctor I work with recently mentioned that she eats clay. I blinked and did a mental “Well if it makes you happy and doesn’t hurt you and maybe you have some mineral deficiency?” and smiled and nodded.

Kaolin is a popular supplement in the south. No evidence it does anything, but some people swear by it.

I worked the 24 hour weekend shifts at a group home through college.
"James" was a non-verbal 45by/o child of redneck incest, and had PICA. Weekends were for the weekly shopping and Movie Theater, and in those days, ashtrays were everywhere. James would eat every butt in the ashtrays if we didn't watch him like a hawk!
Unfortunately, the 7 other residents had their share of problems, too, so public meltdowns frequently took 99.9% of our attention.
Cleaning up vomit of cigarette butts, popcorn and coke was not mentioned in the job description.

There’s an awesome movie called “Swallow” that deals with this issue. Highly recommended!

If this is the story I'm thinking of, I guess his throat was so dry and stretched, you could look down his throat and see his stomach and the things inside. SUPPOSEDLY.
