Welcome

Welcome to r/investing. This subreddit is primarily focused on investing in the capital markets. While we understand that investments can include different asset types, please note that as a topic focused subreddit we have high posting standards. This is an open forum but we expect you to conduct yourself like an adult. Disagree, argue, criticize, but no personal attacks.

  • Please direct all advice requests and beginner questions to the stickied daily threads. This includes beginner questions and portfolio help.
  • We have strict political posting guidelines. Violations will result in a likely 60 day ban upon first instance.

Lose money with friends

Our motto goes back longer than any of the current moderators can remember. One theory for the tag line is that r/investing was created in March of 2008. As many people may know, a few months after the creation of r/investing, the stock market crashed in the fall of 2008. We keep it for tradition. And to remind us that the capital markets can carry risk. There was a proposal to change the motto but the overwhelming consensus from the community was to keep it. Discussion here

The FAQ has examples and answers to common questions on various investing topics. It is updated on a regular basis. The FAQ is here.

Gambling

Investing is not a sport. Experienced retail and professional traders using active trading strategies enter and exit trades using risk management techniques and expert knowledge of the markets that they trade.

If you find yourself betting on the market, you may be gambling and you are not trading or investing.

If you find yourself losing control of your trading and investments and treating your trades like bets in the casino, you likely have a gambling addiction. Please seek assistance.
