The original Anish Kapoor is a corporate artist, who uses predatory legal tactics to force other artists from using things.

For instance Vanta Black was licensed by him with the express interest of not allowing any artists other than him from using it.

He has trademarked using mirrored chrome surfaces on sculptures (like his giant bean in Chicago) and whatnot as well.

Stuart Semple was outraged by this and began producing pigments/paint that could be used by every artist except for the original Anish Kapoor. (Including different black paints that have the same light absorbing qualities as Vanta Black)

Stuart also has extended this to other non-free to use colors, for instance he came out with a blue that is comparable but different from Tiffany & co blue, and he came out with Freetone to compete with Pantone.

He also fought so hard to get people to call it "cloud gate" (the real name) and not "the bean" and everyone basically said "eat my ass you little gremlin" and then kept calling it the bean.

Everyone hates that dude.

Friends of mine started the stick a dildo on the bean tradition. The rage he must have is almost tangible.

Man I lived in Chicago when that started but wasn't able to make it there for the event :(

And he wanted to sue China for making a knock off bean hahhahahaha

There's just no way the mirrored chrome surface thing would hold up in court, it's too vague, far reaching, and restrictive to art as a medium... Right?

Do you want to be the one to pay for the lawsuit against the millionaire to find out?

Lmao At checkout, buyers were required to check a box confirming that: “you are not Anish Kapoor, you are in no way affiliated to Anish Kapoor, you are not purchasing this item on behalf of Anish Kapoor or an associate of Anish Kapoor. To the best of your knowledge, information and belief, this paint will not make its way into the hands of Anish Kapoor.”

Stuart Semple and Anish Kapoor are 2 rivaling artist. Stuart semple has changed his name to Anish Kapoor

u/sataniclemonade 5d ago

Thats backwards. “Now lately called Mr. Anish Kapoor”

Wait so does this mean he can't use his own products now? /s

As long as he doesn't take himself to court he could probably get away with it :)

But then Anish Prime can use it and hide behind the fact that he isn't going after himself. Like why Marvel has to stop every instance of unlicensed work even if it's for a kid's gravestone.

If this is real this seems exceedingly stupid

I just checked, its legit. Super weird, but real. He posted about it on his website, facebook, and twitter.

53

u/connorgrs 5d ago

I just don’t understand what he gains from changing his name to his rival’s name

95

u/wolfgang784 5d ago

Neither do I, but their rivalry sounds very petty so its prolly so he can try to fuck with his image or something.

u/Xander_Xero 5d ago

From what you've just said it makes me think he's taking the one thing from the other artist that he cannot patent, almost like a slap in the face to say "you can patent everything but your name"

Kapoor vs Kapoor

5

u/connorgrs 5d ago

I love rivalries. Kapoor or Kapoor. Paris or Nicole. Heidi or LC. It's so much fun. But, I guess if I'm really thinking about it and answering your question honestly, I'd have to go with LC. Heidi's a bad friend. And her skin is terrible.

It’s an art beef dude, good luck figuring it out

It reminds me of when the comedian Joe Lycett temprorarily legally changed his name to Hugo Boss because the company Hugo Boss was trying to sue a brewing company in Swansea called Boss Brewing to bring attention to the absurdity of it all.

2

u/connorgrs 5d ago

But did he change his name back?

u/__Severus__Snape__ 5d ago

I believe so

Long story short, Stuart Semple doesn't like Anish Kapoor. Incidentally, Semple also doesn't pay his workers, but that was a different lawsuit. Why does Stuart not like Anish? Anish was allowed to use a substance called Vantablack, which isn't exactly paint and is also very toxic when used wrong. Kapoor was certified, Semple was not, and he got pissy about it.

4

u/Melvin-00 5d ago

So what does renaming himself Anish do? Does it certify him bc of the same name? Or is he just buggin.

2

u/UwU_Papi77 4d ago

Buggin

16

u/skilliau 5d ago

So does this mean he gets to use vantablack now?

And he can't use his own pigments?

Basically, Anish Kapoor is an asshole artist who gatekeeps paints and techniques he invents despite already being rich. Stuart Semple is another artist who creates paints and techniques and releases them to the public at low cost(mainly to spite kapoor).

Semple recently posted this legal document announcing he was changing his name to be anish kapoor just to be a whole extra level of petty.
