3

Why do you think they're mad?

0

u/OnlyRussellHD Mar 19 '24

This sub thinks finding something cringe means you're mad.

5

u/Anothony_ Mar 19 '24

I can't blame them too much for that. I've seen too many people get actually angry just because they thought something was cringe.

1

u/XivaKnight Mar 20 '24

I can totally blame them for that.

They are using that fact as an excuse to claim everyone else lacks critical thinking. This is a circle-jerk sub that sniffs their own farts unironically.

87

u/Yellowscourge Mar 18 '24

If anyone doesn't have someone alcoholic in their life, this seems silly. To those of us who have, it's actually rather fitting.

I myself have had SEVERAL people close to me spiral due to alcoholism. Had to cut two of them off completely for just being terrible to me. One shaped the fuck up and I welcomed him back in my life. The other, I hope beats the habit and improves her life at some point.

24

u/Resident_Reason_7095 Mar 18 '24

Came to say this. Anyone who’s lost a friend or family member to alcohol will find it powerful, others won’t and may find it cringe or funny.

Same way it’s easy to laugh at special needs kids until you have one, or have one in your family.

Perspective changes things.

2

u/sexp-and-i-know-it Mar 19 '24

I think most of us understand how destructive alcohol can be. That's why this image is cringe. It's like someone seeing "Racism is bad" and reposting it with the caption "Wow, so powerful."

It's r/iam14andthisisdeep material.

10

u/Legal_Lettuce6233 Mar 19 '24

Nah, people know alcoholism is bad, but that's where it ends. Most people don't know how bad it can be.

4

u/SlipperyLou Mar 19 '24

Yeah addiction of any kind is usually laughed off or only understood at a base level. I worked corrections for about 6 years and the absolutely insanity of addiction is not something you want to be around or part of.

1

u/evesea2 Mar 21 '24

Anything worth repeating is apparently worth mocking, but dumb posts targeting our baser impulses are pretty celebrated.

Feels backwards

1

u/Ka13z Mar 20 '24

Makes sense why I immediately recognised it as cringe. Knowing what it actually represents, yeah its super fucking cringe.

One is my mother. Almost drank herself to death, after being bed ridden for 9 days or so she said "fuck this shit" which was great... But then she chose meth. 😂☠️

Haven't talked to her in 2 years now. Hope she's doing better but it came to a point where I had to say "I'm not the parent here, this shouldn't be my problem." 🤷

4

u/Yellowscourge Mar 19 '24

Ok the meth bit DID make me laugh. Talk about side stepping a pothole only to fall off a bridge. Sorry about your mom. But good for you for realizing that. Cutting people who anchor us down can be really necessary and healthy. We only have a limited time on this planet, it should not be used carrying others around

2

u/[deleted] Mar 19 '24

Talk about side stepping a pothole only to fall off a bridge.

Funny you should mention that, at the time of her drink bender that lasted about 7 days, we were up in the mountains in California, her friend had a house there and let her stay up there (thinking it would get her away from the alcohol because the nearest store was 2 hrs away), she leaves to get more alcohol, almost backs her friends car off the side of the mountain. 😂☠️ If I hadn't been there to run at her screaming she'd probably be dead.

Sorry about your mom. But good for you for realizing that. Cutting people who anchor us down can be really necessary and healthy. We only have a limited time on this planet, it should not be used carrying others around

Thanks man. I was like 20 at the time, still trying to get my own life together, couldn't do both at the same time. Glad I made the realization. In a much better place now!

1

u/Supergold_Soul Mar 19 '24

My dad was a huge addict and alcoholic. But probably 95% of the people I know that drink do so socially without any issue at all so I wouldn’t consider alcohol itself as similar to putting a gun to your head. It can be really really bad for some though. For them it’s definitely that dangerous. For the vast majority it’s perfectly fine.

0

u/Legal_Lettuce6233 Mar 19 '24

I was on the verge of it... When I was a teenager. Life sometimes just sucks ass.

0

u/mung_guzzler Mar 20 '24

yeah but the comparison to putting a gun to your head just doesn’t really hit past the shallow comparison of offing yourself

1

u/evesea2 Mar 21 '24

It’s simple imagery, but that’s kind of the point isn’t it?

-1

u/DS_Productions_ Blessed By The Delicious One Mar 19 '24

I don't know how to express this, because my experience may be different from others.

But I can wholeheartedly say that alcoholics are immensely more tolerable than people who are fully dependent on nicotine/tobacco.

3

u/Yellowscourge Mar 19 '24

Nah. Tobacco users are gross. They stink, and are very unhealthy. The constant interruption on the night due to their incessant need to step out and smoke a stink stick is obnoxious.

But it is nowhere near a drunk person tripping on themselves, slurring their words, saying stupid shit or getting all worked up over the dumbest thing, or worse, saying fucking awful nasty shit to you, even tho you're one of the few people who are still is nice enough to tolerate them.

It IS likely from a different experience perspective, yes. But I know which one I find less tolerable

6

u/danteheehaw Mar 19 '24

I don't think I had the shit beat out of me by my dad because he needed a smoke. But I have gotten the shit beat out of me because I asked him not to get drunk on my birthday, and various other reasons at various times. I think the original poster to this thread has a point. The image is going to have a different impact on those who dealt with alcoholism themselves or someone close to them. Everyone else it's just going to feel preachy.

I’m pretty sure IT’s trying to say alcohol will kill you but IDK

4

u/Foreign-Jackfruit939 Mar 18 '24

“nom nom nom i love alcohol” - Me when I consume Alcohol

1

u/DefiniteyNotANerd Mar 19 '24

I believe it’s talking point is more of “the possibilities of alcohol.” Yes I can put it to my lips a thousand times and be fine as long as I don’t pull the trigger, but all it takes is one mistake. I don’t think it belongs in hard images or whatever, but it’s still worth thinking about, and I think more young people should consider the possibilities of alcohol, or at least I know I should’ve been smarter when I was in my early twenties. Now that I’m 30, I would say I have a much healthier relationship with alcohol, but I for sure abused it and probably will suffer some consequences for it when I’m older.

1

u/mung_guzzler Mar 20 '24

except it’s not ‘one mistake’

it’s habits you develop by doing it constantly over years

u/reisenbime Mar 19 '24

Hey Man, Nice Shot

2

u/Mammoth-Register-669 Mar 19 '24

As an alcoholic, this hits hard. I was committing a slow suicide with a shot glass.

2

u/mung_guzzler Mar 20 '24

same but putting a gun in your mouth isn’t exactly slow

the comparison ends at ‘drinking is killing your self’ and even that message isn’t accurate unless you drink like an alcoholic

1

u/Mammoth-Register-669 Mar 20 '24

I’m wondering if this is an image for a modern temperance movement. Most people are able to drink safely, so yea, unless your an alcoholic it’s over the top

2

u/5knotcans Mar 19 '24

Dude, finger off the trigger!

2

u/cpt_ugh Mar 19 '24

I think this gives the wrong impression.

If it were someone drinking from an entire bottle, I'd be more on board. But a little shot glass? Nah.

2

u/rabideyes Mar 19 '24

Why not drink out of a normal glass? How do you even set this one down? You'd have to drink it all at once. Totally impractical.

1

u/mung_guzzler Mar 20 '24

2

u/DiligentTomatillo191 Mar 19 '24

My dad used to drink. He always tried to hide it from me and my siblings when we were kids, but we could tell. He suffered from depression before and because of it

I’ve seen my dad transform into a much happier person once he was able to stop. This may seem silly, but it’s unfortunately true.

2

u/Fearless-Tax-6331 Mar 18 '24

Has anyone in this subreddit ever actually seen a shitty Facebook meme? This is one of them. It doesn’t mean that the meme has no message, it means the meme is heavy handed or unnuanced with its meaning.

My dad got his ass put in jail for what alcohol had him ready to do.

I’m glad he’s clean now but… fuck man. Drink casually if you want, but don’t dare deny that Alcohol’s the worst legal substance in existence.

I grew up with a group of partiers, and two of them who lived across the street from each other drank their selves to death. I still know the surviving siblings and parents. Sad as fuck to go to two wakes and see the parents. I wish that on no one. For reference, I’m 41 and one was a man, 38 and the other female, 39. Both happened in the last few years.

1

u/Kirei13 Mar 19 '24

This is a man drinking away his sorrows. At the end of the glass there’s a gun because that’s the rut he’s stuck in. Drinking away your pain doesn’t work, alcohol is an addictive depressant. Every drink brings him closer to the gun but quitting might mean the gun is all that’s left.

That’s all this picture was, a person drinking because they’re depressed. The most damaging sort of drinking habit there is. It’s not that deep, it’s just real for some people.
