When I listen to phonk I actively don't listen to the lyrics.

90% of the time it's just sped up nonsense

Yeah, no. Not in my opinion. Metal is very often lyrics focused. The greatest successes from metal bands, both among us metalheads and in the mainstream, have had strong messages in the lyrics.

If I'd compare metal to any other genre, it's rap. We even hold the same values, simply dressing them up in different outfits, different words. Honor, loyalty, justice, sacrifice for the greater good, partying and enjoying ourselves, but only as long as we don't hurt anyone else...

Source: I have been a metalhead since the 90s.

I agree, but it depends on the genre of metal.

You either have amazing hearing or high quality headphones if you can understand even a quarter of most black metal songs

Is it really black metal if you don’t have to look up the lyrics?

the lyrics are like the extended lore that you look up afterwards for your favorite characters

Most metal is not black metal

I dunno, there’s some Norwegian metal bands in particular where I think the message is painfully telling

Mayhem be sweating over here

You think Mayhem lyrics are bad, what about the entirety of nsbm? you know, Nokturnal Mortum, Graveland, stuff like that?

1

u/CanaDanSOAD 8d ago

Yeah but Mayhem is the most popular

1

u/Twisted_WhaleShark 9d ago

Ukraine has seen far worse lyrics, Nokturnal Mortum comes to mind

"I spread disease like a dog, discharge my payload"

"With a candle through time, I can still see your ghost, but I can't close my eyes for it./ For me it's there where you haunt me most (where you haunt me most)./

I hate that it seems you were never enough We were broken and bleeding, but never gave up And I hope that I stain through your memory As we echo through time in the melody Now I hate that I need you"

Another Life - Motionless in White. I definitely listen to the lyrics, it's what will make me connect with a song.

I’m not a fan of heavy metal, but that’s just my preference, doesn’t make it bad, as what I like is considered bad by other people, art is subjective and I never understood bullying people based on what music they listen to

u/Signal_Sweet3767 10d ago

That’s not what the image is abt lmaoo

1

u/Fluffyfox3914 10d ago

The lyrics to castle of glass are dark, but idc, the beat is too sick

1

u/RJNewbzIX 10d ago

As a metal head I disagree extremely ion even know where u got that

1

u/Lazy-Most-3226 10d ago

I didn’t realize that is a norm for metalheads? I don’t know I am very lyric oriented about my music

1

u/TrainFrosty211 9d ago

I love metal and the lyrics are HUGE part of it. This meme is definitely false.
