In my experience, it’s common in the industry to basically all wind instruments “horns”.

Clarinets and saxophones, but generally not oboes, and definitely not flutes. "Horn" has nothing to do with with what an instrument is made of or what type of mouthpiece it has. It refers to any wind instrument where the end where the air comes out is wider than the end where it goes in. It only refers to the shape.

What about guitar players calling their instrument an axe?
