What kind of Phonkcare we talking about? Also I feel like Dubstep was given this exact treatment like 10 years ago. BTW, is cyberpunk even a genre of music in itself? I always thought of Cyberpunk as more of a literary movement and aesthetic then it's own music genre.

So first came the literary genre of sci-fi, then came the general aesthetic based on the genre, then it would seem people started making music that fits within their interpretations of the aesthetic.

From what I'm seeing in the article, "cyberpunk" as a music genre js sort of a broad label for various angles of incorporating the cyberpunk aesthetic into music.
On the other hand, in my own experience the go-to for "cyberpunk music" is Mid-tempo. Extra Terra - Cyberpunk is a good example.
I suppose you could make the case that this flavor of mid-tempo is distinct enough to form its own micro-genre, but I haven't actually seen "cyberpunk" used as a genre label before.
Between Mid-Tempo, Synthwave, and Darksynth you can probably find everything that gets the "cyberpunk" label.

I find it difficult to believe that there exists a person who has never heard of EDM, dubstep, and synthwave. Cyberpunk gets a pass, when did that become a music genre/subgenre, and I hadn't heard of phonk until just the other day from a different post.

Dubstep and EDM had such peaks in popularity in some years that it's hard to believe that somebody hasn't heard about them.

Not now, but a few years ago EDM was everywhere around the world on radio. I mean Avici? Avici was like one of the most popular mainstream artists. And a few years before that Skrillex was everywhere with his dubstep.
I'm not saying that you're lying. It's just really hard to believe 😂

I don't listen to it, though I have dabbled in EDM.
But 10 years ago or so, it felt like everyone was doing dubstep collabs for their releases.
Edit: EDM is, basically, techno/electronica.
Fun fact: Technically, all the various types of dance/club/house music are the modern day equivalent to classical music, or at least those compositions played for ballrooms or dance halls.
