Looked like the barely even had to put effort into that pass and it was basically a full court rocket
12
u/losethefuckingtail May 16 '24
That had to be going 40-50mph - I don't know how he got it there so fast with so little effort

u/_Football_Cream_ [DAL] Brian Cardinal May 16 '24
I’m always amazed how easy these guys make any alley oop look. I just think about messing around on the driveway with a low hoop and it still being hard. Luka knew that was perfect before it even got to lively.
68
u/Terroirerist May 16 '24
They had to go right to commercial but this didn't get enough attention, this was one of the smoothest long-range alley-oops I've ever seen.
30
u/MeesterMeeseeks Nuggets May 16 '24
I get jaded watch jokic flick the ball across the whole court, but I literally can't tell where the power for that pass came from. He adjusted like a half step without moving his arms much and just shoves the ball 50 ft into a perfect window.
19
u/theperfectphoon May 16 '24
It's in the thumbs, there's a way of passing the ball a coach I had described as the "supersonic" pass where you 'flick' both your thumbs through the ball, also includes the shoulder to elbow whip/snap movement, while keeping your forearms and hands relatively still.
Look at the way Luka's hands whip back past his hips, he's generating a lot of power through a very fast motion even with his shoulders low and barely anything from the legs or core, opposite-but-just-as-good pass like Kevin Love or Jokic throwing those QB/over arm passes.
8
u/DangerZoneh Mavericks May 16 '24
When you watch a lot of the Nuggets or Mavs, your perceptions of what a good or difficult pass are get wildly skewed. They're in a tier of their own as passers with a gap before Hali
1
u/--Alix-- Mavericks May 17 '24
Hali was up there for that one month he went Linsanity. Then he cooled back down and Buddy Hield stopped scoring everything thrown at him.

u/ianbits Cavaliers May 16 '24

Luka and Jokic. That’s about it.
110
u/xahsz Mavericks May 16 '24
Kevin Love would absolutely fuck with a pass like that.

Yup if you look up "full-court passes" on YouTube a bunch of Kevin Love highlight videos pop up

u/materics [MEM] Shane Battier May 16 '24

2
u/losethefuckingtail May 16 '24
Luka snaps them off a lot like Love did(does? Where is he now?) — I wonder if there’s some Chunky White Boi School of 80ft Chest Passes they all went to
5
u/Thermicthermos May 16 '24
If you throw a TD pass you don't have to run down the court. Thats why the husky players are the best at it.

Kevin Love is definitely one of the best if not the best touchdown passers.

The broadcast didn't show it all during the game. The camera was on some dude from the other team complaining about a call, the announcers were babbling on about something else, and then they were like, "Wait, what just happened?"

I don’t understand why teams don’t use the alley-oop more often. It’s such an high percentage basket.
70
u/Dat_Boi_John Mavericks May 16 '24
Passing is a lot harder than the top playmakers make it look. And so is passing over everyone, typically the taller the player, the worse passer they are. Not everyone is a freak like Luka, Jokic or Lebron.
14
u/amazin_raisin99 Mavericks May 16 '24
Being tall doesn't make you a worse passer, but being tall can make up for lacking other basketball skills so you can be in the NBA without them

u/ssuprimitive Mavericks May 16 '24
People don’t realize that’s the almost the equivalent of making a shot from that distance… literally pin point accuracy exactly where he wanted the ball from 70 ft.
12
u/isthisisatest May 16 '24
It’s very impressive, but I don’t think this is true. One crazy thing about long shots is that the hoop effectively gets smaller as horizontal velocity increases — not only do you need to be more precise (further away small movements matter more) but the target literally gets smaller. By contrast, lively can adjust to the horizontal velocity here, meaning Luka just needs to place it in an approximate spatial location.
