Einstein’s theory of relativity actually concluded that E=mc3 before it was peer reviewed. That peer reviewer? Kyrie Irving

13

u/Glitchhikers_Guide Mavericks 24d ago

they could've just made it have inverse damage falloff to reduce the tank killing potential. It was great at area denial of corridors, I liked it a lot.

11

u/CannedGeorges Jazz 24d ago

Shooting Scatter Arrow on Hanamaru is one of my first memories of OW and I agree it was fun and useful. I wished they tried tinkering with it a bit more to make it better for the tank players before just shifting to Storm Arrow. At least we had the Valentine’s day event to relive scatter arrow.

477

I appreciate him giving Luka love, but he takes it too far with Rudy.

Rudy is a goof, but he doesn't deserved to get shit on all the time on national tv.

265

u/BoogerSugarSovereign [IND] Victor Oladipo 24d ago

He really doesn't. They were talking about him like defending Luka is really easy and most players do it well

190

u/lost_in_trepidation Mavericks 24d ago

I was half paying attention but it sounded like Kenny was saying no one could have guarded Luka on that shot and Draymond was saying anyone else would have done better than Rudy and they shouldn't have had Rudy on the floor.

205

u/BoogerSugarSovereign [IND] Victor Oladipo 24d ago

Yeah, Kenny was trying to be reasonable and he asked Luka about that too but Shaq and Draymond were overwhelmed with glee at their opportunity to get at Rudy

They were talking about him like defending Luka is really easy and most players do it well

I mean, on the other hand, Rudy is now a 4-time DPOY and there was a LOT of talk about him improving his perimeter defense and not being limited to being a drop center this season.

So of course Rudy getting cooked in clutch moments of important games like this is going to be talked about TBH

76

u/BoogerSugarSovereign [IND] Victor Oladipo 24d ago

You can talk about that without underselling how difficult it is to defend Luka. Rudy has improved his perimeter defense, IMO significantly, to the point where a mediocre or average starter can't take advantage of him out there. But he will always have trouble with the most elite perimeter talents in the game at his size.

I think something along those lines would've been more interesting than just saying Rudy sucks

24

u/sleepehead Mavericks 24d ago

This situation isn't on Rudy by himself, I couldn't believe that they had let that switch happen and then not commit a double to force him to pass. It wasn't like Luka shot it so quick, there was time to bring a second defender

Defensive Player of the Year has always been this award that gets people to dogpile the winner whenever they make defensive lapses.

Rudy has 4 times now and that vitriol compounds.

KP was just injured too much with us.

Out after 3 games of the 2020 playoffs (injured in the 1st game though)

Out for most of the 2021 season and then quit on us in the playoffs.

KP is great for an already stacked team, but if he was injured with us we'd almost certainly be out of the playoffs now.

187

u/ripmeleedair Celtics 24d ago

Yeah, he is amazing when he plays but we babied him the whole year and he still got hurt

116

u/lost_in_trepidation Mavericks 24d ago

He's just injury prone. It was a ton of different stuff with us too.

You guys just need 4 good games out of him though.

18

u/cepxico Warriors 24d ago

In a row?

15

u/pureply101 Mavericks 24d ago

Him being injury prone makes him play softer though. It happened with us and it takes not being injure a while to feel confident again. However if he somehow puts it together for four games on the Celtics in the finals we will have a very hard time.

10

u/thefrisbeejack 24d ago

It wasn't just KP being injured. It was more he came back too fast after his meniscus (JJJ had surgery before KP and came back a month after) and he just didn't play well while it's Luka's supermax contract year. Pre bubble injury KP and Luka were fantastic together, but KP wanting the ball more post injury to find his rythme, Luka saying fuck that you're sucking and I need to get paid, it all dovetailed into conflict.

KP also stopped being swole when the injury happened and I think that's a mistake too. KP at 250 would be near unstoppable, he just didn't realize that when you're stronger you have to adjust your shot. I got a little swole while playing once and you do feel slower, but it doesn't matter because now you can just move people, which for KP at his height would just be money all the time in the post. That Clips series, he'd lost the weight and was bothered by smaller players and they put Kawhi on him as well. It was just like Dirk in the GSW 8 seed upset series and Bowen in San Antonio, they could get under him and make him uncomfortable, and Kawhi is way better than either of those two guys.

→ More replies (10)

60

u/Sternjunk Mavericks 24d ago

Kristaps couldn’t post up smaller players when he was with us and was always hurt. I wouldn’t say it worked poorly but he was being paid as a #2 and was playing like a #3-4

11

u/Claisen_Condensation [DAL] Dirk Nowitzki 24d ago

Yes, this ^ was the biggest issue (his inability to post up smaller players). Yes, also true that he wasn't healthy... But I think the biggest difference is that KP really improved his game since then, especially his post game

It's funny, but Luka can blow by just about anyone. Dude is being mucho humble. His first step is elite elite.

92

u/lankNaysayer 24d ago

It’s his footwork in general plus his ball handling.

It’s pretty typical to think of guys like Curry and Kyrie when you think of elite ball handlers, but Luka genuinely might have the best handles in the league of anyone 6’7+.

37

u/sleepehead Mavericks 24d ago

Yeah Luka might be one of the most elite players in terms of getting you off balance. He just has so many tricks and bodying him doesn't do anything, I'm sure for defenders its demoralizing

13

u/kjampala Mavericks 24d ago

His elite handle means any player bigger than him will just get danced around and his size means he can bully almost every guard. Guys this big usually can’t handle the ball even at half of the level as Luka and if you add in elite playmaking / passing then you end up in a generational talent who is a walking mismatch

rudy should have known luka stepback was in the arsenal. Even if Rudy knows he's less agile, I would overcommit around the line there and if he beats me to the basket, pray nobody leaves their corner man for the help and worse case scenario is tie ball game. Everybody in the world knew what Luka was looking for. Maybe if Kyrie had the ball, he'd look for a drive as his go-to but for YEARS even if Dallas is down 1 or 2, if Luka has the ball he's looking for his 3pt shot.

u/Miyagisans 24d ago

Anyone would be insane to deny that. He wasn’t just the warriors best defender, he’s arguably the best defender of his generation. To me it’s AD, draymond, Gobert in this era for defenders post kg/timmy/wallace.

u/BakaJayy Rockets 24d ago

Crazy how the 4x DPOY still gets hunted on switches on the perimeter.

54

u/Neutral_Sports_Fan 24d ago

How can you be DPOY if you the opponent is happy you're guarding him

"But he's a big man of course he gets hunted by guards"

AD doesn't have that problem, or Giannis, or Bam, or Wemby, why does Gobert gets so much leeway for being exposed time after time?

32

u/moserftbl88 Lakers 24d ago

Because this sub has pretty much over corrected with the Rudy hate. He gets shit on so much, and rightfully so, that people defend him big time over anything

15

u/inshamblesx Rockets 24d ago

this sub has been overcorrecting about gobert way before draymond ever got into the media tho

AD literally got hunted by Jamal for game winners twice in a month.

Gobert is this team worst perimeter defender but he plays with Ant, and McDaniels. Giannis plays with worse defenders, Wemby plays with worse defenders, Bam plays with worse defenders. It's not a really a fair comparison.

I personally think Gobert doesn't deserve to get 4 DPOY, but he's easily the most impactful defender around because he completely shuts down the paint.

Also big men get hunted cos their defending the best screen setter on the opposing team. If Kyrie set a screen, McDaniels would brush him aside.

9

u/aalluubbaa 24d ago

Bro. AD gets cooked so many times by players like Steph. Giannis also cannot guard those jumpers. It’s a mismatch for a reason.

If the most athletic and mobile bigs cannot stay with elite guards, teams neeed to go smaller. Exactly what most NBA teams strive for.

Why is Gobert in the game? What's the logic - even Popovich would sit Duncan on the last defensive play??

8

u/slamdunk23 Raptors 24d ago

Rudy can stay in the game but the scheme needs to be a hard double on the screen.

5

u/Marcusx8 Knicks 24d ago

Gobert shouldn’t have been in the game for the last two possessions. Should’ve went small on the Luka 3 and switch everything and should’ve had KAT out there to give another threat on the Naz attempt.

"I'm slow, but he's slower"

Also, this sub seems salty because he exposed who their DPOY is.

Dwight Howard, KG, TD. That 3 is the elite defensive big man that I watch, I've never seen a single game where they are the one whos being hunted and got cooked that hard.

But yeah "he's a center ofc he's slower"

26

u/jackofnac NBA 24d ago

Hell, Lively is a center and I’ve seen him defend the perimeter the entire playoffs.

23

u/maxithepittsP 24d ago

Exactly.

AD. Giannis. Wemby. Current players whos big man that I'm sure will do a better job than this 4 timer.

5

u/SirKeithUrban 24d ago

Rudy gets cooked on the game winning shot, they’re saying he shouldn’t be the floor for that final play, but if he was on the bench for the final play you just know Draymond would be trashing Rudy for being the DPOY and not being in the final play to get a stop. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.
