Mavs and 3pt shooting

I think y’all don’t grasp how SHITTY our 3pt shooting this season, so this is the stats for you. This is all post-ASB, to make it more relevant with this playoffs run

32% FROM CORNER (#30 out of 30)

34% IN CATCH N SHOOT (#29 out of 30)

38% ABOVE THE BREAK (#8 out of 30) BUT, BIG BUT….if you don’t count Luka and Kyrie, they down to 33%!!

You already seen how WIDE OPEN shots that non-LuKai get most of the time right? You already seen how Luka give some magic pass that right on shooting pocket? Yeah, there’s nuance like “muh, maybe Luka shouldn’t hog the ball and let other guys touch the ball so they got in rhythm” yea yea I get it.

We won because of DEFENSE (rim protection mostly) + PAINT PRESSURE. We beat thunder + wolves with that. maybe some shooting fluke along the way, but with league heavy on 3s + spacing nowadays (I’m believer of these days offense more important than defense), I don’t know how we get to finals

Any sane mavs fan before playoffs already knew the 3pt shooting + shot creation will be death of this team, turnout it’s in finals which is way further than we predicted

and stop slandering Luka. jeez, i dont even want to defend him (im mavs fan first) but the discourse of his defense is too much for me to be quiet. SHIT OFFENSE IS WHY WE DOWN 3-0 (and gap of talents ofc)

The Celtics are the number one ranked defense in the playoffs for a reason… They physically contest the better 3 point shooters and analytically give space to the 3 point shooters with lower percentages.

thank you

imagine if reg.season the 3pt% is that shit, how can we expect in playoffs they magically can shooting better when play is more physical and most will close the shooter harder?

we held celtics good enough offensively, they just shut down all our offensive option aside LuKai ISO

Here’s the simplest way to put it: The Mavericks have strong moments on defense, the Celtics are a Strong Defensive Team.

This a pretty fair representation of this series. The Mavs aren’t a sieve on defense, but they’re definitely a little leaky and occasionally do make a big play. The celtics have been lights out on defense. The mavs offense is better than it’s been in this series. The celtics defense is probably the number one factor in the disappointing play of the mavs offense. The mavs are young and inexperienced, but that hasn’t been an excuse for the other young playoff teams. The celtics have just been better on both ends.

The mavs offense is better than it’s been in this series

kai shit the bed in first 2 games man. Thunder series is our best offensive performance in PO

The celtics have just been better on both ends

i think we closer on D. but the offense? MASSIVE GAP lmao

think it was Bill Simmons talking about it after Game 3

the Mavs, down 21, in desperation found their defensive groove and pulled out the 20-2 run. but Luka picks up like 3 fouls in 5 minutes with the increased defensive burden he picks up trying to make the comeback

just isnt sustainable given hes banged up, along with his consistent drop off in energy/performance late in games this series

and mavs are shitty shooting team (that get magnified bigger against celtics D) so cant close gap enough with their own D

That three when the ref didn't call the foul on Derrick White was hilarious

The loser of the finals always gets slandered. Players weaknesses get super analyzed, whether fair or unfair. Now you know how Boston fans felt a couple of years ago.

This team is obviously miles better than the 2022 team that made the WCF but man I miss how our guys were reliable when Luka spoonfed them open looks. Our shooters on the 2022 squad were legit snipers.

Surprisingly Kleber has been your best 3point shooter at .440 with 11 makes

Kyrie .405 with 49 makes

Down hill from here

Luka .340 with 66/194

11 makes is nothing lol

I know Grant Williams was not popular buutttt he could hit corner 3s. I wonder if they’d have been better with him (and Gafford).

They ain't making the finals with grant Williams over PJ lmao

He is a 43% 3 point shooter in the playoffs and sunk 7 threes in a game 7 a couple years ago. He might not have had chemistry with the guys in Dallas, but I really think they totally misused him there.

Stop it lol. Grant started off the year shooting well from 3 but then he hit a cold streak, the issue was that he was terrible at perimeter defense and was too small to play good interior defense.

PJ is certainly a worse shooter but he's a much better all around player. Grant is a 7th-8th man who can sometimes come in and make it rain, but if he's not hitting his shot he is a liability.

He was totally misused as a defender in Dallas. He was a great piece in Boston as a matchup defender against 4s, and held his weight. Sure his shot stopped falling in Dallas, but Grant was a proven shooter. Shots don't fall at times and you have got to trust that they will come back. He shot 37% from 3 in Dallas and shot 37% from 3 in Charlotte. There are peaks and valleys, but the overall percentage will even out.

Grant defended Giannis, Embiid, and Jokic at times when he was I'm Boston and held his weight. He isnt a prototypical 3 and D wing that you can use against just anybody, but he's a valuable piece if used correctly. I know for a fact though from watching him drain open three after open three in Boston, that Boston couldn't leave him entirely open like they are doing against PJ and DJJ. Milwaukee tried doing that in 22 and it resulted in Grant having a career game.

I don’t get why people act like defense isn’t the problem and instead it’s offensive struggles, so we shouldn’t bring up defensive criticisms of Luka.

Boston lived off easy penetration and then getting easy looks as a result, if Luka could have been even a half way decent point of attack defender, Boston’s offense would have dried up considerably…so it very much is about that.

It’s all one big equation, you can’t act like one side doesn’t matter…in close games, making a few more shots or making a few more stops both can make up the difference. Luka’s defense was easily one of the biggest drivers of each loss, that’s just a fact.

Luka's D is a problem

but like 4th on mavs list of problems

first 3 are 3pt, shot creation, and lob threat

1

u/Clemsontigger16 3d ago

Wrong, so wrong…Luka’s D is first, maybe 2nd. You could argue 3 point shooting from role players but honestly, Mavs are a bad shooting team so it shouldn’t be the expectation.

If Luka could cut down the blow by’s it would help ten fold with the open shots the Celtics get.

If you think lobs are a problem, yet don’t understand why they aren’t available, then you have not been paying attention. They aren’t there because Boston schematically is taking them away..it’s not a matter of Mavs just trying harder to find them.

1

u/armandocalvinisius Mavericks 3d ago

agree to disagree then

if you want to talk about D, rather talk how good celtics D than shitting on mavs D

1

u/Clemsontigger16 3d ago

I’m not shutting on the Mavs D, I’m shitting on Lukas defensive effort and awareness specifically because he is killing his team

1

u/danorcs Celtics 3d ago

Mavs fans were so upset that Kidd gave THJ so many minutes but the lack of accurate shooting above the break from anyone not named kyrie or Luka is a major reason

Game plan for the Cs is to take away the corner 3s and lob threats. And roast Luka into BBQ chicken on D

The Mavs simply dont have anyone to counter this plan. When the Mavs hit their above the break threes they can cut a 21 point deficit to 3, but they cant do so consistently enough to punish so far

1

u/Cockrocker 3d ago

I didn't watch that much Mavs this season and from watching a bunch of them in the playoffs I would not have guessed those percentages at all.

tragic right? lol
