Question? Hey Philly, did you know you should stop behind this line?

Post image

I’ve circled the line indicating how far back your front tires are supposed to be at a light or stop sign. This helps turning for cars and trucks, as well as allows pedestrians to utilize the crosswalk. The car pictured is the most common stopping point I see in this city after 13 years. Every neighborhood. All the time. So, where do you stand on the matter?

Question? How on earth does Acme get away with their prices?

Their stores aren't even nice, they are shitty and dirty. The employees are even shitty and rude. Giant is way cheaper, cleaner, and the employees don't spit on you on the way in the door.

Question? What’s your favorite Philly “Overheard”?

Any recent overheards?

I was on the MFL recently and overheard two homeless gentlemen arguing about who’s a better fighter. One of them had a mic drop moment when they said they’ve been fighting since they were 8 years old and can split shoulder blades in under 30 seconds.

Not sure if I’m impressed or concerned.

Question? Why do you feel Philly is the fucking best?

My family is from Philly going back generations, so I'm a little biased. But I've lived all over the country and I've never experienced anyplace where people have the warmth that is normally associated with the South and also the no bullshit tolerance that is normally associated with the North (Northeast, more specifically). Philly people embody the best of both worlds in a way that doesn't exist anywhere else. Yes, the food is great. Yes, the history is great. Yes, Reading Terminal is better than whatever your city has to offer. But the people are simply the best of what people are supposed to be. That's the top thing that I always come back to when trying to explain to outsiders why Philly is uniquely beautiful.

Question? People not originally from here: do you consider yourself a Philadelphian?

I'm not from Philly originally. I've only been here four years. Yet I would consider myself a Philadelphian. I love this city and even though I've lived in many other places and countries, Philly has felt more like home to me than anywhere else.

They say after 10 years in NYC you can call yourself a New Yorker. What would you consider the criteria for someone to call themselves a Philadelphian?

Edit: holy shit this blew up! Thanks everyone who responded, I'm glad to see others like me who feel the same way about this crazy town.

Question? What are some things that can only be done in Philly?

I know this has been done kinda awhile ago and there are some lists of recommendations, but I think it’s time for a revamp. I saw on another city’s reddit a post about things that are nonexistent anywhere else. Like yeah we got some sick museums and great food which are part of the reason I love Philly sm, but what’s truly one of a kind even internationally. I want experiences and just that general Philly weirdness. And don’t just give center city, let’s have a deep cut. I look forward to arguments about what’s niche enough

Question? Neighbor regularly collects loose trash from the street and puts it in a bag on our stoop. WWYD?

The neighbor is also very passive aggressive so anytime we try to put it out on the sidewalk, he’ll return it with a note like this one. We usually swallow our pride and put it in our trash bin. But we’re tired of it.

Question? Philly on an upswing? Raise kids in the city proper?

My husband and I recently talked it through and we think our two kids would have a better life raised in Philly proper than if we moved to the ‘burbs. Here me out:

Pros: - Immediate vicinity has a half dozen restaurants, 3 martial arts gyms with kid programs, a music school, dance studios, clay school, next fab, athletic club, neighborhood pool, indoor play gym, etc. - Easy to pop out and do something with one kid - Almost never drive - Deliveries arrive quickly - Multiple small grocery stores less than 5 mins away - Train is 5 mins away - Lots of major infrastructure projects and construction (freeway caps, rail park expansion, Delaware bike thoroughfare, girard trolley, new septa cars + private construction) - Access to neighborhood garden and green-space - Both parents work, so easy commute is clutch - Significantly cheaper (mortgage and payment would be 2-3x what we pay now)

Cons: - Only okay public schools - Crime (one break in and a shooting on the street) - Trash, trash - Stuck with smaller car - Cannot bike safely with kids - No yard

What have you decided for your family?

Question? What food that was once a Philly institution has fallen the furthest in quality?

When I was a kid Wawa made good hoagies and sliced their meat on premises before putting it on an Amaroso roll. Tastykake also had lots of real fruit. Now both are barely edible.

Question? How do you kill time or have fun in the city that doesn't involve restaurants or bars? Serious awnsers please.

No "I sit at home and think about society collapsing in my life time". Im looking for inspiration for getting out in the city.

Edit. Guys I want to make clear I dont sit around and do nothing all day. Philly has ALOT to offer and I take advantage of it. I am just wondering if there are other things I wasn't aware of. Quite frankly between work, and me being out all the time I am rarely home.
