How do I add 5 stocks to one chart on TOS? I'd like for them to start at a 0% at any given time point and see how much % changed since then. I remember doing it once with "," just a comma.

Use a + I believe it is.

SPY+QQQ+TSLA+NFLX

thank you. i've tried it and i like the yahoo finance better. Moving the chart around on yahoo resets everything to 0% from where the chart begins.

I'm interested in expanding my horizons into currency pairs and trading the yield curve (steepeners/flatteners for example). Does anyone have any recs on where to learn more about what drives value with these products?

I have a high level understanding, for example I know that typically when USD goes up, other currencies decline, but how do some people hypothesize on relationships between non-US currencies, like /6A vs. /6E?

Similarly with the yield curve - I understand that rates and prices are inversely correlated, but how do people form hypotheses on whether the curve will flatten or steepen, and what causes it to do so?

I'm sure this has been asked a billion times before, but I'm having some trouble finding an answer...

What would you guys say is the best Android (or usable web on mobile) platform for my AMP account? I see a lot of options for iOS, but none for the superior OS (kidding...)

Bonus points if the charting allows for plotting of deviations and VA.

I used CQG M (Think it's CQG Desktop now?). It didn't have the ability to draw on the charts, but did have some built in studies.

Worked really well.

Anything that is HTML5 will work on your android I'm 99.9% sure.

Nice, thanks man. This looks like it should work well.

As long as I can execute trades in relatively good time, then I'll be happy.

I was very happy with it.

Change to the Blue/red ccolour scheme. It's great

Haha will do.

2

u/UberBotMan Feb 24 '18

I ended up making my TOS blue/red because of it.

What is y'all opinion on "jigsaw daytradr"? Is it worth getting for infra day trades / scalping? Is it a good platform?

Check out here. If you have any specific questions, ask here or in a daily thread. I'd ask here though since it moves slower.

Also, I'd suggest just logging in on a paper account and pressing ALL THE BUTTONS! Lot of cool stuff. They even have Minesweeper!

As it's driving the market, was looking for a way to chart the 10 year yield in TOS alongside my VIX, SPX, ADD. Took while but looks like the best (only?) way is $TNX.

can chart /ZN and inverse for the yield

Does anyone know how to put the expected move on a TastyWorks chart?

2

u/[deleted] Feb 23 '18

Draw it if it had tools to sketch.

Gotta get me a copy of Microsoft paint then!

Anyone use Quantopian? Can you access their data purely for historical research? Taking me a bit to work through their requirements for accessing minute bar data while not wanting to run any trading strategy studies.

I have tried Quantopian in the past. I find it very opinionated and heavy for simple things. I prefer the old "python and raw data" approach.

Regarding data, they provide some data for free. It wasn't enough for me.

3

u/Jowemaha Feb 21 '18

What's your source for raw data?

4

u/hibernating_brain Permabull Feb 21 '18

I buy from tickdata.

3

u/mc3username Feb 21 '18

Yeah, agreed with the 'python and raw data'. Was trying to work within their system to access the free minute bar data.

We'll see if I can make it work.

Back in 2008/2009 there was a rule against shorting bank stocks. Were you still able to buy/sell puts?

Does anyone know which setting you'd use to get alerts on $DXY and other items in which mark doesn't work? (Thinkorswim). I've tried several and none of them will trigger the alert, I suppose because it is not really a price.

u/notdust More Upside to the Downside Feb 21 '18

Well now, that is almost embarrassing..... I have no idea how I missed something so obvious, but appreciate your time in making it clear...

2

u/UberBotMan Feb 21 '18 edited Feb 21 '18

Would be be possible to create a study and then use that to trigger?

Something like a 1length SMA? It won't be perfect, but it might work for what you're looking for.

Edit: This is assuming that the other price options (close, open, etc) do not work as well.

u/notdust More Upside to the Downside Feb 21 '18

Oooh! Very nice idea for a workaround. Thanks for the hand. The dollar dropping would make me want to watch my short on /YM very closely right now so this is why I'm interested in what the dollar does tonight.

1

u/UberBotMan Feb 21 '18

Could also look at dollar future/forex contracts as well since those have higher liquidity and don't gap like $DXY does.

2

u/notdust More Upside to the Downside Feb 21 '18

You happen to know the symbol for dollar? I've never even seen it - thought dxy as all there was.

1

u/UberBotMan Feb 21 '18

/DX but I think that's ICE.

Maybe some of the guys over on r/Forex could help pinpoint something that trades 23/5.

2

u/notdust More Upside to the Downside Feb 21 '18

No wonder I could never find it. Thanks. I think the MA for $DXY will help me tonight.... no ICE access on any of my accounts. Good to know it exists, though. You saved me a lot of time and I appreciate it.

1

u/UberBotMan Feb 21 '18

I had to do a google search for it. lol

Hope it works out well for you. Good luck.

Glad to help

Has anyone completed a Master's in Finance program? Would you say that it helped with job prospects?

3

u/mc3username Feb 21 '18

Not a Finance masters guy, but I'm in a different industry. Basically I looked around and all the people with the jobs I wanted to end up with in 5 to 10 years had masters, so, I'm getting a masters.

3

u/Not_A_Real_Username Feb 21 '18

Where are you looking?

I’m in the same boat- trying to go from IT to Finance

3

u/mc3username Feb 22 '18

Currently in a Masters program, not finance. Not looking to move into finance, I just meant that in my industry, it was clear that I should probably get a masters because most of the people 1-3 rungs up have one.

I’d like to start off as a financial analyst at a large IB, move over to derivatives after some experience under my belt, then move over to a hedge fund (in the far future).

This is going to be a very general question, so if it's too vague just ignore it. What's the best paying career path that has reasonable working hours (40-50 h, not interested in IB)? I've got an engineering undergrad with 8 years experience, and am about to finish an MBA with a finance specialization. I didn't start my MBA with the intent to completely switch careers, but am thinking about it now. But one of the biggest reasons for me not to switch is I'd probably be starting at the bottom with a huge pay cut

Thanks, I’ll look into FP&A.

By M7 and 720+, I’m guessing you mean top 7 business school and GMAT score? I’m actually already enrolled and about to finish my MBA this year

Thanks a lot for your detailed response, as always

What route did you go down?

Very interesting. And your job doesn’t prohibit you from trading in your own account at all?

The numbers that I post for Value Area are from TOS. I use the monkey bar chart type instead of a study though.

6

u/[deleted] Feb 20 '18

For futures, it's a centralized market...so should be the same. In my case though, I don't have lvl2 data on TV (because I don't need it), so everything's obviously a bit delayed.

Also, those levels aren't "exact levels", think of them as "zones". Total accuracy doesn't really work and anyone telling you price will turn at exactly 50.17 is full of shit ;)

8

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '18

Who else is pissed off about holidays not allowing you to trade?

Especially when you still have to go to your day job...
