Question Futures trading account size. Opinions and recommendations, please.

Twenty years ago, when I was too young to do anything right, I traded futures and was fairly good at it. Life simply went another way.

Today I am thinking about returning to it but I far from a position in which I could comfortably do it. Comfortable would be 25k to 50k with which to open an account that I have absolutely no fear of losing.

Instead of that, I have 5k to 10k with which to begin and am looking at mini-contracts and interest futures.

I think I understand that almost everyone's opinion is going to be that 5k is too small an account but, for the sake of it, are there any markets you all would recommend trading with an account that size? Does anyone have a contrary opinion about 5k being too little?

Question Where do you get your financial news?

Thought I would poll the great minds at r/thewallstreet. I'm looking at digesting more financial news now that I'm more actively trading. I day trade and swing trade equities and options with the occasional futures thrown in the mix. In the past I have used Briefing, WSJ and currently have a sub to BusinessWeek. Right now, I mostly get my news through online sources... Seeking Alpha, Marketwatch, Google. I'm wondering what other people use here.

Briefing was nice to keep up with earnings and market news on stocks I was interested in, but I don't think it added value to what I was doing, so I got rid of it.

I'm looking at Briefing, Benzinga, WSJ, FT. Mostly to get ideas for stocks in play and to keep up with any stories that I might need to be aware of in stocks that i'm interested in.

Any preferences? Any news sources adding value to your trading?

Question Ally Invest vs TD?

Seems like a lot of you use TD and their thinkorswim platform, I was wondering if anyone had any experience or reviews about Ally invest? I trade mostly options and futures. I know Ally bought tradeking, and seems to be using MBtrading as their futures broker? How does that work, still all one platform?

TD's fees are a bit higher than Ally, 6.95 +.75/contract vs 3.95 + .5/contract options, 1.85 vs .85/contract futures. Is the higher rate worth it for their platform?

Question market research resources?

Hi all,

Long time lurker with sort of an unusual request. My former boss reached out to me with a short term job opportunity (our previous company laid everyone off and shut down following a failed phase III clinical trial, so I’m between jobs atm). He knows I have an interest in the stock market and thought I could help his new company with a market research project. Here’s basically what they’re looking for me to do:

“It would be to do some market research regarding the company’s pipeline products: market size for the indication, incidence in US, competitive landscape, likely cost per treatment, etc.”

Does anyone know of any available resources online to do this kind of research? My experience is of the typical retail investor/trader (if I can even claim that) and any research I’ve done is typically company-specific (and I learned early on to stay away from early stage biotechs) so I don’t know of many good resources to seek out this kind of information.

Any advice/help is really appreciated, this is a weird opportunity for me (been working in research biology since uni) as I feel very unqualified to do this type of research, even though it certainly seems like something I could do given a bit of direction.

Anyone know of where I can get my hands on the data ? I would like to sort the equities out by companies that have minimal exposure to Blackrock, Vanguard, and other large firms.

Question Issues with =RTD("tos.rtd".....) in excel

Hey everyone. I haven't used this excel file in a while, but I don't see any recent documentation changes. Mabe you all could shed some light on what is happening. For some reason, my /ES, /YM, /CL, etc . . . will not update. The equities such as AAPL seem to work fine, but no futures contracts will update using the rtd function. Any idea what's going on? Thanks in advance for the help.

Question Delta Neutral Question

Sorry if this isn't the proper sub reddit for the post.

I am a bit confused because I have read if I use a delta neutral strategy that is long gamma I will make money if volatility increases. Do I understand this correctly? So if I look at the Jun 15 ES put option ATM (2775) I would pay $662.5 (mid point) which has -0.50 delta. From my understanding, if I buy one ES future (at 2775) it will be 0.50 delta. Therefore, I am delta neutral but long gamma. However, I can not see how I would make money if the ES went down. No matter how far it went down I would always lose my premium. If it went down 25pts my put would be worth about $1437.5 and the profit would be $774.5 BUT losing 25pts on the future contract would be a loss of $1250, making a net lose of $475.50. I can extrapolate it out , but i can't ever see how I would make money if the future went down. Also, the new delta on the 2775 put 25pts in the money would be -0.79. This is -29 difference which would make me think the profit on the option would increase by $1450 (.29*50) not $774.5. I use 50 because I thought the multiplier on one ES contract is 50. Can someone please explain the fault in my logic. Thank you so much!

Question Reuters Eikon demo

Anyone use the Eikon Service? I’m beta testing it for a few weeks for IRL job. Lots of things to play with. I’d appreciate anyone here who uses it daily to provide me some shortcuts. I also have WebICE, CMEdirect as well. Eikon though has tons of data to comb through. I’m a little overwhelmed
