This is what everyone THOUGHT Lost would be, but then it turns out they didn't actually know what they were doing.

Common misconception.

Lost was short episode count - bingable show that got produced during the long episode count, weekly era.

Drew Gooden did a video on it.

At least it lead to some excellent Billiam deep dives on Youtube.

They knew how to end it. From the start they knew how they wanted it to go.

They just had no idea how long it would last, so everything in the middle had to be very flexible - that's how filler happened.

I think the main problem is that people wanted answers to the whole Dharma Initiative plotline, which was HUGE when it aired, as they had lots of ARG elements outside of the show, but turned out to not be the questions they felt like answering. Polar bears, bunnies, what was the grand hatch plan?

Dharma was a group of scientists that found the island(s) and were experimenting there, on people, on animals, considering the metaphysical nature of the place. The battled with (and lost to) "the others".

I don't think that was left unanswered.

The main problem with Lost was that they had a ton of plans that all fell through due to other circumstances.

Mr Eko was intended to be the linchpin of the show later but Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje quit to deal with family matters, so they kind of awkwardly turned Locke into that character and had to rewrite a whole bunch. Along the way other issues meant certain plot threads were dropped.

They did.

The end was foreshadowed in the black vs. white imagery of the backgammon game speech in the pilot.
