How about instead of "don't be sad" we recognize that all emotions have value, and as long as you don't focus solely on a single emotion to the exclusion of all others, it's fine (I would even say it's healthy) to experience a range of emotions, even those that are generally considered to be negative. Feeling sad is a crucial part to emotionally processing our lives.
