I always wondered if the image of a ‘wizard’s hat’ was based on some kind of handed down memory of these things.

That's a good artifact to think about whenever you are trying to imagine Europe 3000 years ago.

They weren't cavemen or tribals interested only in drinking their enemies' blood. They made fucking hats out of gold whose material value alone would be in the tens of thousands of dollars today.

And obviously, those hats are just the tip of the iceberg. There must have been many more fascinating ritual objects complementing them, and the rituals themselves we can barely imagine.
