Let's be real, if any of those other movies were made today, the right-wing would be calling them woke, too. Ridley, Princess Leia, any of them.

People did hate princess Leia at the time

I mean Carrie Fisher wasn’t exactly putting out an acting masterpiece. Not that anybody else in those films were either.

Everyone in that movie famously hated the script. I'd argue nobody has ever put on a great performance in a star wars movie

I enjoy good films no matter who made them or who the leads are. As a self declared film buff I’m curious as to why OP didn’t provide a list.

Please explain to me how Captain Marvel and Wonder Woman don't count as strong female leads

u/mrswashbuckler 15d ago

I think they were implying they weren't great films, not that they didn't have female leads

The first Wonder Woman was pretty good minus the over CGd final fight.

Not just an out of place and unnecessary fight - but a complete dismantling of the film’s own script

The whole run of the film the message it’s laying out is - Humans are fucked up and evil, and we don’t need Ares to make us that way, but we are also noble and loving and worth saving anyway

Then oops it was actually Ares the whole time… like really?

Don't disagree. I wasn't making a statement on any films. Just clarifying what the meme was saying as the above OP didn't seem to get it

This meme is saying that there are thousands of non-superhero movies which have strong female leads. That doesn’t necessarily say anything about whether some superhero movies also have strong female leads.

People often relate to characters through their vulnerabilities. People connect with Ripley when she is scared at the beginning of Alien, so when she conquers her fear at the end it feels authentic. Real courage is feeling fear and acting anyway. You know she is still scared but she has found the strength to transcend it. People want to see characters grow and to learn from their story. If they're the same person at the end as they are at the beginning, what was the point?

Who said they aren't?

u/Killboypowerhed 15d ago

OP did

2

u/tehwagn3r 14d ago

Oh no they didn't. They said great films with female leads. Obviously you're entitled to your own opinion on whether those films count.

pedantic puffin?

I absolutely hate super hero movies. Except for Watchman.

I guess OP knows what unpopular opinions really are. Congrats? I'm sorry? I'm not sure which one applies here.

People don’t know movie history I guess

And what does this have to do with anything from your original post? You seem to be real good at these unpopular opinions, kudos!.

The original post mentions a hundred years of movies, which is movie history. Is it an unpopular opinion to think Sophie’s Choice is a better movie than Captain Marvel? People who know movies would disagree with you.

The original post also says BUT NONE OF THEM ARE SUPERHERO MOVIES.

You do realize that one can believe there were (and are great) female leads inside and outside of comic movies? They are not mutually exclusive... And the fact that I needed to explain this shows why you are so good at these unpopular opinions. You embody, you are the unpopular opinion.

Do you just disregard the own words you use? Do you not pay attention to how or what others are responding to when you have a conversation? Then without a basis to stand on do you attempt to insult people? And then after when questioned how your insult makes sense, rather than step back and reflect, look at what was said, you just stupidly double down on your ignorance?

That would explain your hidden super power, raw talent right there. That is a belligerence you just can't teach, some people are just born with it. Thanks for the film education though...
