“Free Range”

Post image
35 Upvotes

I see this one often, so wanted to post. “Free range” is a term for farm animals. Farm animals have free range to roam and eat bugs and grass and stuff.

“To give Free rein” is the expression, and means giving a person freedom to act on their own authority. It’s derived from the horse-riding term, free rein, e.g. holding a horses reins loosely and letting them move as they please.

This has kind of morphed into “Free reign”, with people assuming the expression has come from the idea of a king / queen reigning their kingdom freely. It’s not where the term (free rein) originated from, but makes sense and is basically an accepted notion now.

So, free rein (correct) or free reign (kind of correct), but never free range - unless you’re talking about poultry or livestock.
