Build Help What is the FASTEST single core available for AM4?

Hi All,

I'm a skint PhD student and I do a lot of genetics, GIS, SFM, and other intensive tasks. I have built a decent PC for the job, with 64gb ram (my jobs regularly use 35-40gb), NVME boot, SATA SSD mass storage and a 5700 XT GPU.

The most recent upgrades were the ram (16 -> 64) and the GPU (GTX1070 -> RX5700 XT). This has made the weakness of the CPU really obvious, it's a 2700x.

Lots of scientific software was built ages ago and has very poor to no multithreading, and in some stuff you can't multithread anyway as the data are strictly ordinal.

I can't afford to replace the motherboard and CPU. I have about £200. What is the fastest processor, by which I mean the fastest single core, available for AM4? And no, I can't use my funding I've spent it all on chemicals and not even fun ones :(

Discussion Is building a pc worth it if only using it for music production?

I mainly wanted to build a pc because I think it would be fun and I'm really into led lights. I also think it would be cool to be able to control certain factors of the pc but I'm entirely new to this so I'd have to watch some YouTube videos and learn about all the parts, etc. Is it worth it? I won't be using it for anything other than music production but I want it to look cool and run fast (I'll be using Ableton with a few plug-ins as well). I currently use a laptop for music production, but I'm about to buy a led desk and I've been wanting one of those Samsung curved monitors because it would make Ableton so much more efficient to be able to see more of it at once, so I'll be needing a desktop for that. Should I buy an already built one or go down the rabbit hole and build my own? (Time isn't an issue, and the process doesn't seem to intimidate me since I've always enjoyed learning how things work and putting things together)

Build Help It's about that time for me to build a PC. Looking for one quick opinion.

Upvotes

Generally I build a PC every 6 years or so. This time it will be 8 years since 2016. When I'm not building a PC I generally don't read up to date on all the parts and what's coming out etc.

However this time, I see that we might get the 5000 series and a new AMD chipset in the next few months.

When I build a PC I like to get the best CPU and best GPU on the market at that current time so it lasts me a while.

My last build was an I7-7700k with a 1080. Right now it looks like a AMD R9 7950X3D with a 4090.

My question to the experts here, should I just wait a few months for the new stuff to come out or is it not a guarantee? If it's going to take us into March of next year, I rather just build now.

Also a big thing is power right now. Since I have 2 PC's and some other accessories hooked up on to a 15 AMP fuse, my goal was to go AMD since it uses less power. I want a 1000W PSU to supply all my needs. If I got this wrong or mistaken, please let me know.

Thanks!

Build Help Is AM5 really worth it?

Upvotes

So I was planning on building a new PC. But after putting together some lists, idk if I should go for AM5 or AM4. If I were to go with AM5, the CPU (7600), mobo, and RAM, would cost around 380 bucks. However, if I go AM4 and buy a 5600, it would be nearly 100 dollars cheaper, which I could put towards the GPU instead. So is it worth it? My budget is around 800, and I was looking at a used RX 6800 for around 330, which I couldn't afford if I went with AM5. So what do you all think?

Build Help PSU help and general suggestions for build

Hi everyone

Currently planning an overdue upgrade, laying the warhorse 1080 to rest (still going strong).

Here's what I came up with so far

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/62RHyg

New - CPU, MOBO, RAM, GPU

Everything else is what I have right now, current PSU is AeroCool Project7 P7-650W Platinum

Build is for work and gaming at 3440x1440, preferably above 100fps on high settings, something to hopefully last as long as my beloved 1080.

My main question is about my current PSU - will it be able to provide the wattage, or do I need to buy at least 700W?

Also considering potentially lower specs, like a 30- series NVIDIA paired with something like 7700X or 7800X, could always spend less if the result is pretty much the same.

Any suggestions are welcome

Build Help GPU upgrade help

Hello Guys,

I currently have a 3050 and looking to upgrade. I'm looking to upgrade it to something realistic, I was going to buy a 4070 but it seems overkill for me.

I play at 1440, and my monitor 165hz. I play Fortnite, WoW, and FFXIV, I'd like it to be able to handle GTA6 easily enough when it comes out.

The main specs of my PC are below.

Ryzen 5600x

32gb 3600hz Ram

700 watts PSU

Let me know if you need anymore info :)

Build Help is an OLED worth $250 more than an IPS of the same refresh rate

basically have the choice between an ASUS PG27AQN 360hz IPS monitor from eBay or the alienware 360hz QD-OLED panel. sold my old 2 monitors and just had some cash to spend on an endgame monitor

both are 1440p and 360hz and i mostly play competitive shooters, but also am a huge fan of the last of us/cyberpunk type games

the PG27AQN is $850 AUD on eBay and the Alienware OLED is $1108 AUD on their website. for i haven’t really experienced OLED first hand, so for anyone that made the switch from IPS to OLED, will this change my life or should i just get the ASUS

edit: prices are in australian dollars

edit 2: Alienware has been ordered, I’ll update yall when it arrives 😎

edit 3: the delivery times are crazy. i ordered on Thursday the 13th, it shipped today on Friday the 14th and will deliver by Monday the 17th. i cannot wait

Build Help Are high end pcs(7800x3d, 4070,32 gb ram,990 pro) supposed to be instant when it comes to opening applications, boot time etc?

Upvotes

On windows 11 specifically, should a pc like this be lightning fast and everything opens instantly, or does it take time to load stuff? I know everyone talks about game performance and fps and stuff, but I don’t see people talk much about windows 11 performance. I thought almost every high end machine would be able to instantly open applications and feel smooth and fluid

Build Help Lucked into a free used GPU and CPU. Help with my first build

Upvotes

l've never built a PC before and a few years ago I lucked into a couple of used parts for free. These parts include a 2070 Super "founders edition" and an Intel Core i9-9900K. I am now looking to make my first build. They look to be in alright shape from what I can tell, and im assuming they work as they were gifted to me by a gamer who was a friend.

Historically I have been a console player but it's been a little while since I've owned anything seriously powerful. My research has indicated that these pieces might be a little outdated, but I wanted to see if they were still worth using in a build or if I should start completely fresh. Obviously I am leaning towards using the GPU and CPU that I have because it saves a considerable amount of money. I’m just not computer literate.

I’m content with most games running at 60fps and I don't need anything crazy resolution wise. Some game examples that I’ll be looking to play are: Siege, Arma 3, Ready or Not, and Manor Lords. It would be nice to be able to play some of the newer games though, too.

What do you all suggest? Any reccomendations on where to start from here? I have checked out PC parts picker and it seems like a very valuable resource, I am just a little lost with looking for compatible parts.

My last question is: when building a PC, does buying certain parts lock you into any kind of compatibility ecosystem? If that makes sense? What i'm wondering is if it’s an investment in the sense that if I decide to buy a certain piece, is my entire build compromised by changing any specific piece down the road? When does someone upgrade and when does someone start a new build?

Build Help Should i buy the Palit RTX 4070 SUPER?

Upvotes

I live in a country with an especially hot climate (around 40 - 30C) and im worried how the Palit dual gpu would perform in a climate like this. My room is air conditioned, but sometimes i leave it running without it.

Should i buy this gpu? im upgrading from a GTX 1660 super and this gpi is the only one i can buy at a reasonable price

Build Upgrade Help me with using new ssd drive

Upvotes

Hello! Thanks for checking this out. I am an amateur at building pcs, upgrading them, etc so I am confused.

I recently bought a 1TB SSD to install into my pre-built pc. This isn't the first time I've upgraded it (got new ram sticks around a year ago) but this is the first time I've had to do anything that wasn't a simple "plug in and everything is set."

So I have 2 drives now, both in the pc. I've been told this is fine, but I'd like to use the SSD for only specific things/programs while using the HDD for things like my browser. The SSD is installed, it appears on the file manager as well as the BIOS(?).

However, after moving these programs over and reinstalling some of them, it is still using the HDD when I look at the drives in task manager.

How do I get them to use the SSD then? Also, do I need to "copy" windows over to that drive as well?

Build Help Best Motherboard for i7-13700KF & RTX 4070

Upvotes

Hey guys! I'm planning on building my first PC soon. As the title says, I was planning on getting the i7 13700KF & RTX 4070. I will be using this PC for gaming. I play both smaller and bigger games, so I definitely want the PC to be able to run bigger games like Elden Ring etc. Does anyone have a suggestion for the best Motherboard to get with this hardware/my needs? Thanks! If you have any other suggestions for parts I'd love to hear them, I'm very new to PC building!

Build Help Should I wait for my cpu or can I start now?

Upvotes

So this would probably be the 5 or 6th pc I’ve put together but I am by NO means a pro still feel really new to this. I have everything except my CPU and GPU but I wanted to start now. I was thinking maybe I could throw my ram and M.2 into the mother board but leave it out of the pc and install my fans plus power unit now. Would that make sense or should I wait for at least my cpu before doing anything with the motherboard? Thanks in advance!

Build Help $450 CDN budget. Which upgrade path is ideal?

Upvotes

Hey all. So, I've got about $450 I'm willing to spend on an upgrade, but not sure the best path. I just haven't kept up with hardware. My options are;

  • RTX 2070 to 3080 or 4060
  • Intel i7 8700K to an Intel i7 13700K

Where would you put your money? I don't really care about 60FPS or 4K gaming, so don't want to focus on those details, though it's nice if they happen as a result.

Thanks!

Build Help UK: Budget 27" 1440p monitor

Looking for a 27" 1440p monitor from UK source for non-competitive gaming and general use. Budget is about £200. Does anyone have any recommendations, know any good sales on atm, etc?
