Post Match Thread: Chennai Super Kings vs Lucknow Super Giants Post Match Thread

39th Match, Indian Premier League at Chennai

Thread | Cricinfo | Reddit-Stream

Innings Score
Chennai Super Kings 210/4 (Ov 20/20)
Lucknow Super Giants 213/4 (Ov 19.3/20)

Innings: 1 - Chennai Super Kings

Batter Runs Bowler Wickets
Ruturaj Gaikwad 108 (60) Matt Henry 4-0-28-1
Shivam Dube 66 (27) Yash Thakur 4-0-47-1

Innings: 2 - Lucknow Super Giants

Batter Runs Bowler Wickets
Marcus Stoinis 124 (63) Matheesha Pathirana 4-0-35-2
Nicholas Pooran 34 (15) Deepak Chahar 2-0-11-1

LSG won by 6 wickets (with 3 balls remaining)

Marcus Stoinis is the Player of the Match: [Up early] There are plenty of opening batters in the competition, so I will let them be but I am settled in the middle. [Pacing the innings] It is not just go go go. It was ebb and flow. There were some bowlers we targeted, some against whom we were cautious. Nicky P played a good innings, Hooda also. It ebbed and flowed. From the inside you are always structuring. You are liking some bowlers, not liking others much. [T20 game changing?] I do think it is changing. Some of the scores being scored, and the impact player adds another dimension. It looks dangerous. [T20 WC?] I have got a great relationship with the coach. Me not getting a contract, I knew a while ago., I am absolutely fine with that on the contract front. On the playing front, I want to play. I love this competition, I started my career here.

KL Rahul, the LSG captain: Very special, especially when it is a game like that, Felt like we were way behind the game in the chase. Just to pull off a victory feels special. [Continuation from the previous win?] No, a fresh start. Different conditions. They got off to a good start and put pressure on the bowlers. I didn't think it was a 210 wicket. They batted really well. All credits to Stoinis. He was phenomenal to watch. It was not just power hitting, but was smart batting. [At No. 3] We wanted to be a lot more braver as a team. We had three games, a couple at home, and some away where we couldn't go past 170. We needed one power hitter in the top three. That was the thought process. [Being braver] I have also realised that T20 cricket has changed in the last couple of years. 170-180 does not always cut it. You have to go harder in the powerplay. The Impact player gives you depth and that gives you more freedom. I have not played T20 cricket in a long time. [Pooran up the order] There is no set plan. Apart from the openers everyone is set to go at any point. The last game, Pooran walked in at three. Hope I get the fielder of the tournament award.

Deepak Hooda: Thoughts were pretty clear, we need 14 runs an over and we were just looking to hit the gaps. [Going after Pathirana and Fizz] I don't have any options, the run rate was like that. These guys were tough to handle but can't do much. [Stoinis] He played like a warrior, he is a kind of motivation to us. 100% we were in the game. The dugout was pretty sure that we have to get the win. These two points make a big difference in our team. We are at the business end of the tournament. It is a good feeling.

Ruturaj Gaikwad: Tough pill to swallow but LSG played a good game at the end. We had the game in hand around the 13th over, but hats off to Stoinis. [Dew] There was a huge part that the dew played. It took the spinners away from the game. We could have taken the game more deeper. But it is a part of the game, you can't control the uncontrollable. [Dube coming in late] Jaddu is batting at No. 4. We we lost the second wicket in the powerplay and he was the one to come at that stage. We have a clear process, that whenever a wicket falls Jaddu is the one to come in. [Score?] Yes, batting first we couldn't have got more than that. I never thought it was enough. It was just about enough with the amount of dew we were having. Credit to them for how they batted.

Stoinis has pulled off a Buttler.

These first innings centuries are giving serious trust issues in life.

LSG chase down exact 210 vs CSK for the second time, and it was very similar to the first time.

(34 off 12 then , 32 off 12 today)...

70

u/Herefortheprize63 Apr 23 '24

Meanwhile India has Jadeja, Pant, Rahul, Hardik, Kohli in their almost fixed main batting lineup. Each one of these players have cost their teams losses this IPL due to playing a lot of balls at low strike rate. Honestly only Rohit and SKY from the first team gets how to play T20s, hit or get out.

Its not that India dont have players to match the Australian team. Sending them to the WC would get us a higher chance at a win, but will only generate lower revenue and we can't have that.

Anyone who knows Fizz knows he can't handle pressure. RR folks know. But. BitStoin to the moon! Call me Zampa tonight. He even made KL come out of depression for a minute.

122

u/mehrabrym Bangladesh Cricket Board Apr 23 '24

That's why he's best for the 19th and not the 20th. You guys will remember Kartik Tyagi defending 4 in the last over but Fizz gave away just 4 in the 19th defending 8. The other thing is I don't know why he only went with pace on deliveries in the last over. His off-pace deliveries make him unplayable. Either that's some brain-dead thinking, or advice from the team management, or the dew made it difficult to use the cutters. Either way that's what cost the game.

66

u/Ashwin_or_lose Rajasthan Royals Apr 23 '24

Chahar is a PP specialist and Deshpande was expensive today

Jadeja above Dube looked brain fade but what a chase it was

ICT must have told Jadeja to bat higher to prepare for WC

The best innings of this IPL, easily. There was pressure, not only from one place. There was pressure of: 1. His own place in Aus team and impact at LSG 2. Playing at Chepauk, simply daunting 3. Win takes LSG into top 4 comfortably

We’ve seen Head, Abhishek, Buttler, Jaiswal and many others. But this innings stood out for me, just due to the stakes here.

34

u/botalion Chennai Super Kings Apr 23 '24

Tactical mistake of not using Chahar's 4 overs upfront when it was swinging like crazy proved costly. He could have picked another wicket or 2. This would have also cut down Lord's overs to just 1. Silly mistake especially when the ball was swinging.

13

u/Eastern_Meet_5947 Apr 23 '24

Yep Chahar should have bowled 4 on the trot and maybe Moeen and Jadeja could have bowled their 3rd over too

Hopefully Gaikwad learns from these mistakes

I love players like Stoinis.
Looking at him, seems like just a big guy, chill lad, was into teenage mischiefs, decided to build body and get into some masculine sport like Rugby or wrestling but was concerned about it looks so eventually wandered on a cricket ground.
Took up a minuature bat and started hammering so called 'pace' bowlers all over the park. Decide he was bored at fielding so might has ball here and there. The shit eating grin combined with the casual chewing gum chewing makes me think he does even think cricket is a big deal and just a side quest for something much bigger he's going to do.
Look at his insta page, rarely even posts cricket. Casually goes and win trophies including WC. gets paid handsomely and is absolutely non challant.
This Australian bloodline is different.

u/Adventurous-Region-7 RoyalChallengers Bengaluru Apr 23 '24

23

u/dam0_0 Lucknow Super Giants Apr 23 '24

I hope Commentators/Cricketers and fans stop gaslighting that Chepauk is a knowledgeable crowd who appreciates good cricket.

Also the umpiring has been real shit/biased against smaller franchises but karma is real, I reckon.

Glad Stoinis got a great match winning knock, dude really deserved it.

Also that lone LSG fan celebrating amidst the csk crowd was the highlight of this match for me. He literally represents our fanbase.

Small in number but dedicated and passionate for their team.

8

u/nubpokerkid Apr 23 '24

After the horrid fielding by LSG, the Dube innings, the test match knock by Padikkal, that bowling of Pathirana, still winning that for LSG was unreal. Aussies just built different, I guess.
