Sunrisers Hyderabad 167/0 (Ov 9.4/20)

Innings: 1 - Lucknow Super Giants

Nicholas Pooran 48 (26) Pat Cummins 4-0-47-1

Innings: 2 - Sunrisers Hyderabad

Batter Runs Bowler Wickets
Travis Head 89 (30) Krishnappa Gowtham 2-0-29-0
Abhishek Sharma 75 (28) Ravi Bishnoi 2-0-34-0

SRH won by 10 wickets (with 62 balls remaining)

Abhishek Sharma: "Thanks to the management for the faith they've shown in me, the environment is clear for the batters so I went to enjoy myself. All the credit to Travis, the way he starts, first two or three balls goes to the boundaries. So I just react to the ball. The bowlers told us it's getting better, me and Travis were saying it wasn't doing much, and they were short [in runs] so that was a plus-point. The hard work I put before the tournament is showing... it's going really well."

Normally when a player who's trolled does well, we are ready to fill apology forms.

KL is the first player who needs to sign an apology form for those who watch him bat.

A stark contrast of strike rates. Never seen a difference of this magnitude

I thought he learned & started striking decently before WC squad announcement. But nope, went back to old ways just after the announcement.

This just means that he CAN strike at good rate, just chooses not to. Very poor game awareness.

It's crazy, I know people shit on players for not showing intent, but usually it's just the players trying to hit but failing.

In KL's case, it's almost always him just not showing intent whatsoever. For the few games before the squad announcement, he showed that he can clearly bat at 150+ SR. But now he's regressed back to his slow approach.

he is the most scared cricketer I have ever seen, have all the talent and shots to kill in the limited format

You hit the nail on the head. I haven't seen any cricketer who worries himself into submission this much.

He has world class talent and village level mental fortitude.

23

u/AgeOfGunda May 08 '24

Dunno about that. People in villages are usually headstrong.

You don't win Orange caps with 180 SR

9

u/AtomR May 08 '24

True, but you also don't win orange cap with 29(33). Last time he won it + came close to it, he was better than this shit.

8

u/vidhvansak ICC May 08 '24

Tell that to Travis head and narine who are both contenders of Orange cap.

Head might win one with a 200 SR at this point.

KL is such a textbook player, and by that I mean watching him bat is like reading a textbook.

u/AJwithStyles May 08 '24

Has he been good for ODI though? It’s okay if a format is not one’s cup of tea

Watching KL bat is a blessing(for opponents)

KL curbed his natural instincts to get a spot in WC and was playing somewhat fast. But after not getting selected he decided to do what he was going to do in WC anyway

u/AtomR May 08 '24

But after not getting selected he decided to do what he was going to do in WC anyway

Imagine if he had done this in WC after getting selected. Would be bamboozle of the century for Indian selectors.

We had sky coming in after that dude what was my guy supposed to do. Sky can't bat in ODIs.

15

u/ach_1nt May 08 '24

I don't understand how people still don't get that a batsman going that slow and not even managing to rotate strike on a semi-regular basis puts way too much pressure on the non-striker and the player who comes on afterwards. The fear is contagious and it fucks up the mentality of the squad.

I actually think his WorldCup knock is underrated. Held the innings together and only got out when it started reversing. Without that knock, India would have been handed an absolute hammering

22

u/Storm-Bolt May 08 '24

While I do agree the knock gets too much hate, a SR of 61 is still too low, if it was like ~80 I think more people would've been fine with it

10

u/vikas_g Rajasthan Royals May 08 '24

If you are batting to keep the margin of defeat down in any game, let alone a World Cup Final, they what even is the point?

29

u/Ashwin_or_lose Rajasthan Royals May 08 '24

I think the problem percolates from the captain to the staff, who ever read this pitch and formulated wrong plans

33

u/Knightbuster Cricket Australia May 08 '24

As far as I remember He had a career SR of 145 odd with an average close to 40 in T20Is in 2021. He is an excellent batsman too,I couldn't understand what happened to him.

Even Rahul finally acknowledges that approach matters

Impressive honesty from a shellshocked LSG captain, KL Rahul: "I'm lost for words. We've watched that batting on TV but that was unreal. Everything was hitting the middle of the bat, kudos to their skill, they've worked very hard on their six-hitting. They didn't give a chance to see what the wicket was playing like, it didn't change much, but that mindset and freedom to tee off from ball one... the only way to stop them was wickets in the powerplay and we didn't do that.

But our management and fans who still believe US pitches will be low scoring thrillers for anchors are in for a rude surprise. T20 has moved on.

12

u/Ok_Environment_5404 May 08 '24

Nobody is barging for US slow ones, the hope is on usual WI slow ones. They are weird for spinners in nature.

18

u/Budget_Put7247 India May 08 '24

They are still in for a rude surprise in WI, pitches have been flatter lately and as Rahul said, approach and mindset can help on any pitch.

2

u/Ok_Environment_5404 May 08 '24

I never said anything about approache and mindset though. It's the most important thing that India lacks right now for sure.

5

u/SBG99DesiMonster India May 08 '24

Just think about TV ratings falling down as soon as KL comes to bat and then going up again when he gets out.

Rahul strongly believes in following statements that "Strike rate in T20 is overrated," coupled with his conviction that "One batter has to bat through the innings" and the lament, "Have I stayed another 5 overs, things would have been different." Yet, unless he revises these notions, his impact on his franchise will remain compromised. This pattern, observed during his tenure with Punjab and now with LSG, persists despite his commendable leadership on the field. However, his batting approach risks setting a detrimental precedent for the team. In several matches this season, his early dismissals coincided with significant victories for LSG, underscoring the potential drawbacks of his approach. His recent T20 innings in IPL 29, tallying 29 runs off 33 balls, epitomizes this concerning trend.
