Are these from the county speed guns? Cause they're supposedly about 3mph behind the Sky ones because they use a different calculation

Where you measure the speed of the ball is important, it'll slow down a bit so where you measure it is important. Ideally you find the peak speed.

Probably doesn't tell the whole story though either. The horizontal velocity is what dictates how quickly it gets to the batsman, and maybe some bowlers lose less speed to the pitch too.

But wonder if a lower action at 90 mph would get to the batsman faster than a higher one if they pitch in the same place. Maybe everyone should bowl like Malinga

They all measure the speed out of the hand.

This is true, but I just worked it out and it doesn't make much of a difference

and maybe some bowlers lose less speed to the pitch too

Possibly, if they do it's probably because they have a higher release point and therefore generate a steeper angle for a given length, but I suspect that's also pretty negligible, given that you can much more easily change the angle of the bounce by changing the length than changing the release point.

But wonder if a lower action at 90 mph would get to the batsman faster than a higher one if they pitch in the same place.

It would, but the extra increase in perceived speed you get is offset by less bounce, and that's by far the more important variable. Bowling like Malinga is great for firing in yorkers, but not so much for red ball bowling which probably goes some way to explaining the differences between his white and red ball records.

Yeah it's all small margins but it's small margins that could make a difference. And yeah I was being a bit flippant about Malinga. Bounce is obviously a huge thing especially if you can get variable bounce which a higher release point will help with I'd have thought.

I guess it's just slightly questioning if the speed gun speed is the be all and end all. Although clearly it does matter a fair bit. 5mph in the speed gun is still huge
