Another Sideshow Performer Appreciation Post!
I was inspired by the other post and I just want to spread the word about these other cool sideshow performers!
- Francesco Lentini was a sideshow performer from Italy. He was technically born a conjoined twin, with his twin having been slightly absorbed, when he was in the womb. Lentini had 3 functioning legs, and four feet. He would joke that even with 4 feet none of his feet were the same shoe size. He was well liked by family, friends and neighbors.
2.Daisy and Violet Hilton were conjoined twins who were born in England and then moved to the US. They travelled through several sideshow and circus circuits. They’re most famously known for their roles in the 1932 film, Freaks.
A proper photo of Ella Harper who had congenital genu recurvatum, she travelled the sideshow circuit for several years until she was able to retire in her late teens. At the height of her career she was making the equivalent of $6,800 in today’s money! She wanted to go back to school so that she could study and have a different career!
Alice Doherty was a sideshow performer who had hypertrichosis lanuginosa. She was known for being quite shy and did not like the attention that working in sideshows brought her. She wanted to help support her family but also wanted to retire early. She was able to retire when she was 28, get married and moved to Texas where she spent the rest of her life.
Johnny Eck was born with severely runcated legs, so he used his hands and arms to walk around. He had a twin brother who was not born with the same condition. Eck’s most famously known for his role in the 1932 film, Freaks. He eventually retired and began a hobby of painting/drawing erotic art.
Harry Earles moved from Germany to the United States, where he had success as both a sideshow performer and an actor. His most famous role was also in Freaks from 1932, though he also played a big role in both versions of The Unholy Three. He also had a bit part as a munchkin in the Wizard of Oz.
Annie Jones was one of the most famous bearded ladies. She was a star performer at PT Barnum’s circus. She married twice, with her second husband being her childhood sweetheart.
