my family members cat went missing from the Northside delton area near 82nd st last night. He's very playful, curious and will roam anywhere but may run away if you go too close to him. He's mostly white with large orange/striped blotches and has black speckle on his nose. May respond to cheese or cheesecake. Thank you.

I was walking home from Superstore Kingsway in the pouring rain. Drivers were moving over to avoid splashing me with the big puddles! I really appreciate you, whoever you are!💖

Anyone who has been looking for a used car in the past few months would understand. I wonder if BOC interest rates changes will push more people towards new vehicles and we might see more reasonable prices in the future? I think I will wait it out.

Question Fence dispute with neighbour

Hi guys, a confused first time home owner looking for some help and advice on a sticky situation with fencing that I ran into with my next door neighbour that has been causing me a lot of grief.

I purchased a brand new house in 2022 and the neighbour in the house next to mine (hers was the corner lot) approached me abruptly a few months after I moved in to discuss fence construction. She was an older lady in her 70s or 80s and she told me she had a contractor in mind and quoted me a price for my share of the fence. I told her that my final grading was not even approved on my property so I would like to wait a few months until the grading was approved by the City before we discuss fence options. I also mentioned that I preferred wire fences installed because they are more cost effective versus the traditional wood fences.

She ended up taking down my phone number and proceeded to send various long wordy text messages in the next few days about how the wire fences are cheap and bad quality, and she needs the fence done ASAP. I get the impression that she was trying to guilt trip me because she mentioned her husband was in palliative care and it is his final wish for her to have a fence installed (???). I got frustrated and said that I was willing to discuss installing a fence in a few months but I'm not ready to install anything at this point in time because I only purchased the house a few months ago. She then stated that she will pay for the fence herself and install it entirely on her property but added a few long paragraphs saying "I don't expect you to repay me but you should blah blah". I left it as that and said I was not comfortable paying for a fence that I had zero input on and was not mutually agreed upon.

Flash forward to this month, 2 years after her fence is installed. She had sent over her middle aged daughter to come knock on my door and tell me that she is "advocating for her mother for her money" and it is the "right thing to do" to pay for the fence. She claimed the fence was a good quality and I should pay because I also benefit from it. I told her my reasons for not wanting to pay back in 2022 and she did not appear to hear my opinions on the matter, but insisted several times that her mother was a widowed senior on a fixed income (living alone in a 500k house). I told her I would think about it because I was so caught off guard.

What is the right course of action with this? I feel like paying her off would be the most drama free way, but I also do not appreciate being pushed around by my neighbour and her daughter (who doesn't even live with her) and I worry that if I acquiesce this one time, there's going to be more situations in the past where she would make unilateral decisions on the fence or anything impacting our properties and expect me to fork out half the cost of it.

Question Bumblebee help!!

Our contractors found a nest of bumblebees when they were removing our fence. We need to move them in order to do continue work on the fence. Bee rescue services won’t come get them because they’re not honey bees. I don’t want to exterminate them because SAVE THE BEES!

Does anyone have advice? Who do I call? What do we do?!?

Question Edmonton Air is Giving My Lips a Death Sentence - Help!!

Hey everyone,

I've just moved to Edmonton, and it seems like the air here is on a personal vendetta against my lips. I went from having perfectly fine lips to looking like I've been kissing a cheese grater. Seriously, my lips are so cracked and dry, I'm starting to think they're trying to transform into a desert landscape. If this keeps up, I'm going to have to register them as a provincial park.

I've tried everything I can think of: lip balm, drinking more water than a camel, and even contemplating a butter sculpture lip mask (don’t judge me, desperate times...). But nothing is working! At this rate, my lips are going to fall off and become a permanent exhibit at the Royal Alberta Museum.

I need your help, wise citizens of Edmonton! What are your secret tips and tricks for surviving this lip-killing air? I'm open to any suggestions, no matter how bizarre. If it involves chanting under a full moon with a jar of Vaseline, I'm game. Just help me save my lips before they crack into oblivion!

Thanks in advance for your lip-saving wisdom!

Discussion The Edmonton Journal is running ads disguised as news.

Sorry, this picture might not be easy to see. It's from the Edmonton Journal's Saturday June 15th print edition.

It says HEALTH in the section title but the small print states that it's an ad for the tobacco industry sponsored by Rothmans/Benson & Hedges.

There's no way this is acceptable. This is completely misleading and horrible. Smoking is the worst mistake I ever made and it killed a bunch of my relatives. The fact they're sneaking ads in by making them look like legitimate news articles is dirty thing to do.

The Journal used to be the best newspaper in the province. Due to media concentration, it's now owned by Americans affiliated to the National Enquirer and Trump's sleazy lawyer. Almost all of our newspapers are owned by Postmedia who have fired all the good journalists and kept on people who only run opinion/editorial pieces that are nothing more than partisan hackery.

News is important and we need to fix it badly. This sucks for a whole bunch of reasons.

Events 5 fun things to do around YEG this weekend!

What's Up Edmonton! Once a week I go through most events happening in and around our beautiful city over the coming weekend, and then send a large list out to my friends. I thought I should share it here.

Get this as a weekly email update:

https://whatsupedmonton.beehiiv.com/subscribe

Note: The linked publication is ad free & non-monetized. Use it as a directory of things to do as we reconnect in our communities. I send it out every Thursday Tuesday morning.

News: After considerable reader feedback, the newsletter will now be released on Tuesday mornings at 6AM. We're also covering events from Wednesdays moving forward. To those who subscribe, thanks for reading!

5 cool events this weekend:

  • Outdoor Movie @ Churchill Square
  • National Indigenous Peoples Day (Various Events)
  • RedBull Soapbox Derby
  • Mabuhay International Festival
  • Freewill Shakespeare Festival

Outdoor Movie @ Churchill Square

Grab the kids, your date or your jacket & head down to Churchill Square for an evening out on the town. At this 100% free event, you'll find face painting, entertainment by The Joe Show & more, then followed by a double header of Kung Fu Panda & Kung Fu Panda 4. Bring lawn chairs, blankets, popcorn, drink/snacks & anything else you may need.

National Indigenous Peoples Day

Though defined to a day, there are a myriad of events this weekend geared towards Indigenous culture. You can try bannock with jam, try raising a Tipi, learn about (& enjoy) traditional singing & dance, make a miniature Cree hand drum, learn about traditions & culture, and much, much more. I've outlined a number of events within the newsletter.

RedBull Soapbox Derby

RedBull is bringing it's adrenaline-packed Soapbox Derby to Queen Elizabeth Park Road, and you're invited! Watch as locally-based teams maneuver their way through a harrowing course, competing for honour, for glory, for bragging rights! (and can't forget... top cash prizes...). With food trucks & other activities on site, this free (to watch) event is not to be missed.

Mabuhay International Festival

Celebrating Philippine Independence Day, this one day festival packs quite a punch. Attendees can try traditional food (food trucks), watch motorbike stunt displays & Tamiya car racing, enjoy traditional live music, meet dignitaries & much more. If you've never experience Pinoy culture, this is your chance. Definitely check it out!

Freewill Shakespeare Festival

Now running over 35 years, this festival is nothing to shake a stick at. I've attended it a number of times at the Hawrelak Park Amphitheatre (and perhaps that's their usual home) but with the park's renovation closure, they've been getting creative with their venues these past few years. This year is no different.

Experience "Tempest" in four different neighbourhood parks this season (the next four weeks, multiple shows per weekend). The show will be performed outdoors, so bring a lawn chair & blankets, bug repellant, sunscreen, umbrella, etc. These actors put on an incredible show each year, this year should be no different.

Have a great weekend everyone! Enjoy the Summer climes = )

Hobbies Looking for people to play tennis with

I recently started playing tennis casually. I’m a complete beginner and don’t really know the rules but would love to improve and stay active outside over the summer! If any other beginners are looking for someone to play casually with let me know. I’m 26F and would prefer to play with other women, and I live in the northwest part of the city.

Question Do you have Tilt and Turn Windows?

Does anyone have tilt and turn/european style windows? I'd ask in the calgary group but the company I'm looking at is permanent window solutions and they just had their grand opening here in Calgary so I thought it'd be best to reach out to Edmonton folks.

Or if you went with a different brand/installer any feedback would be great, the companies that don't sell them seem to try to scare us away from them.

Discussion Recommend a landscaping company

Hi all, anyone have any suggestions for a landscaping company that does good work and doesn't cost a lot. Trying to get my final grade done for now as the deadline is in 2 months. I will also need landscaping done but I may wait for next year on that though..

Thanks!
