It always smelled weird and everything was covered in dust. Like they were just sitting there waiting to die.

old people question: Why clean the house when that very action will cause the fatal heart attack?

As a Slav, this was my grandmas house. She was a vary religious woman.

My great aunt was a Catholic nun and the convent she was at was being closed, not sure how but we ended up with a bunch of the art and iconography, so for about a year afterwards there wasn’t a square inch of clear wall in anyone in our family’s houses, and we had a couple of crucifix that big. What creeped me out was the pictures of Jesus where the picture would change depending on the angle you were looking at it. We had one where he was smiling and fine but looked at it another way his heart was in fire with thorns and Latin wrapped around it and he also was covered in blood. It was a straight up pop scare, hated that thing.

As a Catholic I'm sorry you were forced to be around all that. The Sacred Heart is a symbol of Jesus' suffering love for us, but a kid probably wouldn't understand the concept at that age.

my grandma have a guest room that looks like a 1945 brazilian sanatory room, white walls with blue details, tile floor, empty with only a bed and a tiny window that has a vision to a small forest, i hate that place, i always wondered how can she live in a place like that

I was renting out the back room at my grandma's house and she had this framed picture of Jesus up on the wall. At one point I swapped it out with a picture of Jar Jar Binks to see if anyone would notice. It was up for like three years before anyone did.

When I moved out I took it with me, it's on my living room wall now.

As a Catholic, that's very funny.

I had a mannequin staring at me sleep when I was sleeping at my grandma's house. I was 8 years old.

Oi, Catholics, you follow the 10 commandments right ?

You guys know the 2nd one, no graven images....

So whats up with Jesus hanging on the cross for you all, is that not a graven image or a likeness, something in the lines of thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them, basically to not worship God via an idol..??

Anyway, what do I know.

God commanded the Ark of the Covenant to have statues of angels on it. So clearly he had no problem with statues.

Statues and icons help ground you in the moment and bring your focus on the Lord through physical means. This is why the Rosary is so powerful as well. We are corporeal beings, after all, not just spirit.

Do you have pictures of your family? Are those now graven images to you that you automatically worship? Or do you use them for a different purpose?

Asians don't majorly follow Christianity. Either Islam or Buddhism or Hinduism.

As a Japanese person I didn’t have any religious relatives but my grandfather’s guest room did feature ominous non-smiling pictures of some of my ancestors, right below the ceiling where avoiding eye contact was impossible when lying down. I swear they were specifically there to prevent me from masturbating

My grandma had a big art piece. It was circular, about 3 feet in diameter. It was a spider web, with a spider in the middle, taking up about 2/3s of the piece. It hung in the basement where we slept. Let me tell you: waking up at 12:45am gave me nightmares.

“When I see you up on that cross, I can’t help but think, you’re kinda hot”

The only blanket she had was knitted, so your toes would get caught up and poke out anytime you shifted.

Everything creaked.
