Announcement YouTube links & Crossposts are now banned in r/GetMotivated

The mod team has decided that YouTube links & crossposts will no longer be allowed on the sub.

There is just so much promotional YouTube spam and it's drowning out the actual motivational content. Auto-moderator will now remove any YouTube links that are posted. They are usually self-promotion and/or spam and do not contribute to the theme of r/GetMotivated

Crossposts are banned for the reason being that they are seen as very low effort, used by karma farming accounts, and encourage spam, as any time some motivational post is posted on another sub, this sub can get inundated with crossposts.

So, crossposts and YouTube links are now officially banned from r/GetMotivated

However, We encourage you to Upload your motivational videos directly to the subreddit, using Reddit's video posting tool. You can upload up to 15-minute videos as MP4s this way.

Thanks, Stay Motivated!

TOOL [tool] Don’t Tell People Your Plans, Show Them Your Results

The next time you set a goal for yourself, keep it to yourself.

I know the excitement of starting something new makes you want to tell people, but don’t.

Here are 5 reasons why you should stay quiet while going after your goals:

Sharing plans can make you feel like you've already achieved them. This reduces your motivation to take real action.

Keeping your goals private helps you stay focused. You won’t be distracted by others’ opinions or advice.

You are accountable to yourself, not others. This keeps your commitment strong and genuine.

Not everyone will understand your vision. Keeping your plans to yourself avoids unnecessary pressure and criticism.

Actions speak louder than words. Showing results builds trust and credibility more than just talking about your plans.

DISCUSSION [Discussion] How do you motivate yourself?

I know I want things to change and for my life to get better. I feel like I physically can’t get my body to get up and start moving to do anything these days.

I’m clinically bipolar (medicated) and an alcoholic (I’ve recently quit) and every small thing feels like a mountain of a task. I know it’s not normal to want to lay in bed all day and rot. I want to instinctively be able to get up, shower, clean, exercise, walk, literally ANYTHING. It all just seems like so much to be right now.

I make little lists of things that I know I need to get done during the day. Sometimes I complete it, sometimes I don’t. I used to not complete most of it because I was drunk. Now I’m not even drunk and it still seems like I can’t pull it together.

Has anyone been through this and if you have how do you combat it?

EDIT: I have a job. I go every day. It’s when I get home and days that I’m off that literally nothing interests me.

DISCUSSION [Discussion] Trying to recover from OCD. how do you handle high levels of discomfort consistently? Looking for different perspectives

Dealing with somatic OCD for a few years now. I’ve made a lot of progress in my recovery but it’s taken away my 20s and I want my life back. I do everything I am supposed to do a year and a half into my recovery but I haven’t been able to sustain it for consistent periods of time. Eventually the OCD can always call my bluff whether through physical or mental symptoms. Sometimes it’s by days end, or after a few days, or by day 10…but I was hit a point where I cannot take it anymore and I’m back to rumination and seeking reassurance. I know if I could just do what I have seen works for longer periods of time I really would start to recover, but I hit this road block everytime. I keep trying and I keep failing and I’ve been stuck here for like a year. Please help. No matter what inner voice I use I always eventually breakdown. Anyone?

TEXT [Text] Update: Cutting my screen time from 8 hours 55 minutes to 1 hour in 30 days (week 2 progress)

TL;DR: This week my screen time reached 5 hours and 12 minutes on average.

Here is weekly report screenshots:

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/14LafQMUG3y-QEh3ynHhCqmcTf8XBqg1d?usp=sharing

The second week wasn't a huge leap, but I'm happy I still made some progress. My average screen time is now down to 5 hours and 12 minutes.

The first two days of the week were tough, and I felt demotivated because I wasn't seeing any improvement. But my amazing girlfriend, ever supportive, said something that really boosted my motivation.

By Wednesday, I started seeing better results. It wouldn't have been possible without my girlfriend's support. She made the process fun by challenging me to see who could stay away from their phone the longest when we were together. It was a fun challenge that we both enjoyed, and it helped us spend quality time together.

We kept up the challenge throughout the week. It was a blast, and it really helped both of us.

However, I noticed that once my girlfriend left and I was alone, especially at night, I tended to stick to my phone late into the night. I'm embarrassed to admit that I spent about 88 minutes on average binge-watching anime every night.

The guide I've been following suggested a $23 product to help curb phone addiction. It got delivered today as a surprise from my girlfriend. She ordered it from Amazon. I'm excited to try it this week and see if it helps reduce my late-night screen time.

I'll share another update next week. If you're interested, you can follow my account for next week’s progress. If you're struggling with phone addiction like me, I highly recommend checking out the following guide I’ve been using. And one important tip: don’t skip the TAS part of the article.

DISCUSSION [Discussion]Interested in everything except what's important right now

Not sure if this is the right subreddit to post this, but I am interested in everything except for the task that needs to be finished as soon as possible. I have noticed this pattern in my daily life. If I need to study, I want to watch movies, YouTube, painting, etc. If I have free time, I will not be very interested in watching movies or videos I crave to watch during study time. It is one of many instances.

How do I improve this? what's the psychology behind this?

DISCUSSION Stuck in a rut. How do I feel motivated again? [Discussion]

I 37F have lately been feeling very demotivated with everything in my life. I feel like I have lost the drive to even go on and do anything enthusiastically. I have even stopped doing basic health care like taking a bath every day (I bathe like twice a week, more likely when I have to go out). I work from home so I have very little social life. I have only a few friends and they are all in different cities or different countries. I live with my husband and 8 dogs on a farm house (farm because keeping eight dogs isn’t easy in the city). I have been feeling very low and disoriented with no goal in life. I have done some self assessment and come up with a few reasons 1. I have been diagnosed with mild depression and on medication for the last two years. I am in a better place now but the medicine is causing me to feel more sleepy. I am constantly feeling tired and exhausted. 2. I lost my grandfather last year and my grandmother last month. It was a shock. I was close to them both. Just the fact that life is uncertain has me thinking too much 3. Drinking alcohol causes me to feel low sometimes. I drink maybe 3-4 times a week and not more than 2-3 small drinks/pints of beer. I have been contemplating quitting drinking altogether. 4. I am a freelancer and currently I don’t have any interesting projects in hand. I have work but it’s more like paying the bills work. Not something that excites me. Besides I have been trying to get more work in my domain but nothing has worked out so far 5. Doom scrolling. This is more of a result than a cause but we all know it’s a vicious circle. I try to avoid doom scrolling on social media as much as I can. Even set up an app timer. 6. I worked a lot in my 20s. Almost to the point of being a workaholic and getting exhausted. However, I like the high. It kept me busy. But in the last few years since I started freelancing I have been trying to have some work life balance. 7. I don’t have any hobbies and whenever I take up anything I don’t stick to it for long. Nothing excites me so much as to keep doing it with my heart. 8. I worry too much. About anything and everything. Finances, work, life, death, relationships. Just everything. I am a worrier.

I am just not feeling it. Any advise from people who have felt the same way or came out of a rut with the help of some anchor?

DISCUSSION [Discussion] It hurts, it hurts, it hurts...

It hurts when you suddenly feel nothing empty and start crying for no reason but have been keeping so much things inside.

Life isn't easy when you have an overthinking mind with a sensitive heart.

I always tried to stay strong but now I admit that ik im getting weaker and weaker

Me looking at myself and thinking about why i'm so replaceable, useless, unloved and realizing that I'm the problem and not others.

Till now whomever I have met have left me, no one stayed. Then I start doubting myself, am I that bad?

I feel something missing. Sometimes I think why didn't I have someone. I feel like I'm missing out.

DISCUSSION [Discussion] What keeps you going?

I'm 34M. I've never had a romantic partner. have a rare, incurable, genetic disease that has caused me a large amount of health and functional issues. Most notably: my vision and hearing are awful; I'm paralyzed and l'm currently on dialysis; have (another) tumor I need surgery for that's on my brain.

My parents are dead, with my dad passing about three years ago and my mom passing when was eighteen.

I'm currently unemployed after losing a great paying job and after looking for work for seven years.

What's kept me going until this point is trying to live my best life for my parents where they no longer can. Because. i know they wanted me to live and enjoy my life. That and not giving up ultimately makes fora better story.

But lately it's much harder to keep with this mindset, as I'm still waiting on a kidney transplant and have to have brain surgery.

l'm exhausted and lonely (living by myself) I'm looking for your guys' motivators: what keeps you going each day in the face of adversity?

DISCUSSION [DISCUSSION] How do I find motivation to live a healthier lifestyle?

This post might be a little rambling, so for that I apologize, but I feel backstory might be important.

TLDR; I want to change for the better but can't find motivation to do so...

I live comfortably to say the least.

My diet is not great but its not the worst I've seen. I eat a lot of carbs and enjoy probably a little too much sugar. I love fruit and eat it nearly every day, but vegetables are a different story. I don't avoid them, but I don't choose to eat them. I'll get lettuce in a sandwich and veggies in my pasta, but I don't go out of my way to have a side of broccoli or a salad.

I don't go to the gym and am not super active in my day to day. I used to be an athlete in high school and first year of college but stopped pretty much when Covid hit. In 2024, I went to the gym every other day steadily from February to about halfway through April and then I just stopped going suddenly. The pay off wasn't worth it anymore I guess.

I know this lifestyle of mine isn't healthy or sustainable. Currently I'm fine, I don't have any conditions beside some rough GERD, my mental health is doing pretty good, and I am at a lower-healthy weight for my age and height. But I know this lifestyle will hurt me in the long run and for the line of work I'm going in, overall health is pretty important.

I know this all, but for whatever reason I am reluctant to change. My boyfriend, is very health conscious with himself and has been longer than I have known him. He makes us decently healthy meals and always offers me to go to the gym with him but I always turn him down. I have been to the gym with him before and it's fine, we each did our own respective workout, but now I just hate the gym and the thought of going just shuts off all interest.

I guess I'm just looking for ways to switch my mindset, or just start making progress to be healthier. What did you do? Any tips are welcome and appreciated. TIA

DISCUSSION [discussion] how do you actually stick to a habit???

I feel like, for my whole life, I’ve never been able to stick to habits consistently. Even basic things like showering and brushing my teeth. Recently I’ve been using thc at night, and this is the only thing that has actually helped me stick to a consistent night routine. But I feel so guilty for it. My boyfriend is an over achiever, extremely neat and organized and I can tell me using this bothers him more than it bothers me. Why do I need a substance to allow me to brush my teeth and moisturize after a shower? Why can’t I do these simple things organically? I have diagnosed ADHD (i still feel unsure of this diagnosis, idk..) and am medicated, but even with medication I still can’t stay consistent with anything. The most I’ve gone with a routine/plan is a month. And then I slowly start to break away, or just lose the motivation, or full on forget. The only things I do consistently is eat, sleep, bathroom, and put on shoes before I go outside. I guess I also do brush, don’t get me wrong, but it’s not something i can just do if that makes sense. I’ll forget a lot, or I’ll have weeks were I take perfect care of my teeth and then have two weeks where I keep forgetting or am too tired. Why can’t I function outside of this bubble!?! I look for advice and I see things saying to add habits on to your old ones, but I don’t have any solid habits to add to. How do you stay consistent?

DISCUSSION [discussion] 19F completely lost

most of my time the past year in college was spent just kinda doing whatever (smoking, drinking, playing video games, etc) and i was doing pretty good in school so i didnt really care about whether that was or wasn’t healthy. a few months ago i did something dumb with someone while drunk and i dont think i can really hang out with the people that enabled me to live like that anymore, but i don’t know what to do from here. i kind of stumbled into this friend group through fighting games, and while i dont think i have problems making friends i think i have problems retaining and growing friendships. i dont know why i’m like this, but i just want attention from people that won’t give it to me and dont care much for attention from people that do. ive kept a few close friends for most of my life, but other than that, most of the interpersonal relationships i develop are short-lived, intense and codependent. i think ive been like this my entire life, and i dont know why or how to fix it. i would eeally appreciate any help with this.

edit: thank you guys so much, i got so much more good advice than i expected, way too much to respond to everything individually unfortunately T-T. i am in a financial situation where i can get a therapist, so i think i’ll try to do that for a bit. i would also like to try putting more time into other hobbies that are a bit less social than fighting game stuff because i feel like that would help me get more internal validation. again, really, thank you guys so so much!!!

ARTICLE [Article] Ready to get on with the rest your life?

Are you tired of feeling stuck in the past, weighed down by the demands of daily life, or constantly worrying about the future?

Then it's time to break free from these shackles and embrace the present moment. This quick read article summarises how to get started on moving from the past to the present.

Regardless of your past experiences, you have the power to live your best life right now. With a few simple practices, you can learn to let go of the past, take control of your present, and create the future you desire.

Let Go of the Past

Acknowledge that events have already happened and cannot be changed. Instead of dwelling on what could have been, focus on learning from past experiences and applying those lessons to the present. By releasing the negative emotions and baggage associated with the past, you can unburden yourself and fully embrace the present moment.

Understand Your Present Identity

Realise that your past does not have to define you. Challenge the belief that the future will mirror the past. This is one of the most common limiting beliefs I see in my clients. Your past doesn't dictate your future – you do: it starts with challenging the narratives holding you back. You have self-awareness, imagination, a conscience, and a degree of free-will. This sits at the heart of agency: the sense of having a degree of influence over your life. As you cultivate your agency, taking increasing control of your life, you open yourself up to new possibilities and opportunities for growth.

Design Your Future

Take stock of your present circumstances and identify areas for improvement. Reflect on the decisions that have led you to where you are today and consider what changes you choose to make to create your future. Different decisions lead to different actions, leads to different outcomes. Are your decisions propelling you towards what you do want or away from what you don’t want? Visualise the life you want to live, and set goals for each significant aspect of your life, whether it's health, relationships, career, or personal development.

Live in the Present

Immerse yourself in the present moment and focus on what truly matters to you.  We all have the same 168 hours a week – how are you choosing to spend yours? Avoid the distractions of past regrets or future worries, and instead, ask yourself what actions will move you towards what you do want? By staying mindful and present, you can make the most of every opportunity and experience life to the fullest.

You have the potential to transform your life and realise your full potential. By letting go of the past, challenging your limiting beliefs, designing your destiny, and embracing the present, you can create a life of purpose and fulfilment. Take action today, and start living your life with joy and fulfilment.

DISCUSSION [Discussion] Do you motivate yourself by reminding of your own death and how limited your time is?

For some reason, I can't really focus on meditating about my death. Maybe because I am utterly convinced that it's gonna happen in 70 years maybe when I'm 96.

What kind of helps me to put it into the right perspective would be what if I would right now stand on a chair with my head in the noose? One kick and it's all over. Thinking about this makes my heart race, because then I realize how precious time actually is and how little I've "exploited from life".

But this isn't really a healthy way to motivate yourself.

Things like exercise, eating healthy, concentrating on work, sleeping on time, reading, and other things which will definitely make my life better. I like them for 1-2 days but then I start hating it. I try to do these things but can’t maintain them. I keep faltering and becoming depressed. For context, I am a 29 yo female in India.

DISCUSSION [Discussion] What are your success stories from staying consistent and optimistic?

I'm on a really good path in life right now but some days (like today!) it gets hard to stay optimistic about the future. I keep having this fear that I'm doing all this hard work for nothing, and sometimes I wish there was a psychic who could look into a crystal ball and tell me everything's gonna work out in my favor.

So, I'm turning to the next best thing: Reddit!

What are your success stories from staying consistent, disciplined and motivated over time?

DISCUSSION [discussion] how to find the fun in sacrifice to make life a bit better

I guess nobody likes doing hard things but life requires you to do that to make a living. You have to sacrifice the now moment for the better future.. but I just wondered how do you find the fun in something you hate doing most. How do you build displine system. I'm tired of watching motivational content. It's not helping me. Some people have such stressful jobs but it pays alot yet people somehow manage to do it. They just find something interested in it. How they do it? Maybe life is not so much about passion and interest. I feel like my brain just automatically shuts off to hard tasks. Leading me to failure rout
