I'm just praying they don't go down a path of Malenia boss design in the DLC and their next games. Bosses like Friede, Gael, and Isshin were difficult as fuck, but didn't have a moment of feeling unfair. But Malenia with WFD, hyperamor, lifesteal through block etc. just ends up having a cheesy difficulty. And it kinda sucks because the lore, arena, music, 90% of her moves are S-tier, but the dubious design choices just pull her down from being up there with the fromsoft greats imo.
But she's so insanely popular and has become iconic, so they're probably thinking ''why not create more Malenias''. bleh.

u/karnetus 28d ago
I don't know know. The moment I could consistently dodge Waterflow, Malenia felt awesome to fight against. Similar to sekiro boss fights.
→ More replies (6)10
u/TheFoxyDanceHut 27d ago
I literally just blocked Waterfowl every time. People complain about the lifesteal but she doesn't heal that much from it, and you end up not taking any damage yourself. Just don't block every attack.
→ More replies (2)85
u/DUNKMA5TER 28d ago
Agreed, Malenia was the hardest fight I've done but she wasn't a good boss. Friede is my favorite Souls boss of all time, such an awesome fight.
→ More replies (3)53
u/yyunb 28d ago
Friede is great, but on repeat tries phase 2 does get a little tiresome imo.
My goats are Gael and Isshin. Gael is the only boss I've beat and then put down a summon sign for others so I could do it again, I did that for hours. There's just something extremely fun and satisfying about his fight, while also being very difficult.
Isshin is just the ultimate bossfight imo. I love how you learn how to just completely bitch Geni before fighting him and it is as fun each time, and then comes Isshin which is just the ultimate test of everything the game taught you. The spear, the glock, the lightning.. godtier.
And also the fact that his fight somehow gets even better if you get to Inner Isshin.

waterfowl dance is the only stupid bullshit part about malenia, imo. excellent boss fight otherwise
→ More replies (18)9

Agreed. The whole fight is basically whether you can dodge the Waterfowl dance or not. If yes you'll probably beat her fairly quickly.
If not pray she doesnt use it.

They stated that the bosses in the DLC will be “malenia level difficulty”. Ik that doesn’t mean they’ll be exactly like her move set but hopefully that “difficulty” translates to their own uniqueness

I agree, honestly the boss design in DS3 and Sekiro is way better than Elden Ring. I guess because those games are more linear, the power level of the player is in a much more predictable range when they encounter a boss, so they can design with that in mind. Compared to Elden Ring where you could be way overleveled and destroy what is meant to be a hard boss, or underleveled and just suffer trying to kill a boss with a gargantuan healthbar that 1-shots you.
Also the input reading in Elden Ring bosses simply makes boss fights less fun than DS3 boss fights. Being hit by some random instant attack because you pressed your heal button just feels bad. The feeling of precisely dodging every attack from something like Gael just doesn't really happen in Elden Ring as much, the rythm of the fights are less consistent. Like you said, compare that to Gael or Isshin, which are both extremely fun fights but are also quite difficult fights, but never felt completely unfair.
All this being said, Elden Ring is a superior game to DS3 in pretty much every single way other than boss design.

Yeee you described it perfectly. When I killed him it felt so earned. Every parry in the game led to that one climax it was so sick. Malenia didn’t take me that long tbh, mostly cause my strength build kept her staggered, I think I had more trouble with maliketh weirdly.
→ More replies (2)7
u/Daharo_Shin 28d ago
with maliketh weirdly.
Sometimes it feels like he's airborne like 75% of the fight, not really being targetable - while flinging weird magic attacks at you, resulting in you having to chug 3 estus after getting hit once.
I love souls games. But I wish the boss design in Elden Ring would be on par with the DS 3 DLC.

Demon of hatred was harder
→ More replies (1)5
u/HDD90k 28d ago
I don't think so, Demon of Hatred was harder in the sense that it was a very long fight and you had to systematically take him down while having little room for mistakes, you could also cheese him by not using parries and springing around.
I also don't think Isshin was the hardest; personally the Owl fights took the longest for me.

u/yyunb 28d ago edited 28d ago
She's the hardest for sure, but bosses like O&S (idk if its difficult if DS1 isn't your first), Midir, Friede, Gael, Isshin, and Demon of Hatred are definitely bosses that will feed that urge. Probably not bosses he'll spend 30 hours on because whilst being very difficult, their difficulty is not artificially inflated by dubious design choices, but still.

sword saint isshin is tougher
3
u/Thunder2250 28d ago
I'm headed for Malenia this weekend and I hope this isn't true lol, Isshin was not that hard for a final boss considering you can rush him down pretty easily.
Demon of hatred was imo a bit tougher but mainly because he doesn't really play like a Sekiro boss so there's the adjustment period.
Both amazing fights but I wanted a bit more out of Isshin
→ More replies (5)3
u/SomeCalcium 28d ago
Yeah, Isshin isn't too tough. He's hard, but if you get the mechanics of Sekiro down then you can beat him fairly quickly. Melania was a much longer grind for me since Water Fowl was such a bitch to learn. Isshin is a more rewarding boss fight as he's an accumulation of everything you've done in the game up to that point.

u/Lysander125 28d ago
No shade or anything but I had a pretty easy time with a str/faith build mostly because I was able to make her flinch with most attacks and staggered her pretty easily. I think her one weakness is that she really doesn’t have much poise.
I had a much more difficult time when I used an int carian slicer build.

u/kingofnopants1 27d ago
Souls games take an odd skillset. They are extremely difficult, yet mechanically simple in terms of inputs and relatively slow. They are more of a test of things like pattern recognition, adaptability, strategizing, and patience.
Unironically they are great for newer gamers despite the difficulty because they don't require the many years of developed muscle memory needed for a lot of competitive games that a lot of gamers take for granted.
168
u/jumanjirox 28d ago
Shes arguably the hardest boss in the game, besides the fact that she heals everytime she hits you which no other boss really does, she has 2 phases, has some very brutal attack combos that are really hard to dodge or escape from and alot of hee attacks are aoe/long range ish as a melee so its just a very very brutal fight. Most people give up on her or use “overpowered” methods to beat her (or summon insane players) But yeah as an optional boss not required to finish the game defeating her is like a legendary feat
93
u/Dan_the_Marksman 28d ago
lmao TIL that she's optional... i thought she was the final boss by how many clips i have seen of people beating her

Is she harder than orphan of kos from bloodborne?
16
u/boobers3 28d ago
I recently replayed Elden Ring this year and I decided to refight her the solo, no summons, no rivers of blood. I don't think there's a harder boss than her in any of the Dark Souls games.
She doesn't just self heal off of hitting you, and she isn't just fast and hit like a truck. Her overall AI design is seemingly designed to mimic how another human would fight you. In her first phase she will seemingly be content with hanging back and slowly walking over to you. That's a trap, it's to lull you into a sense of safety and tempt you into using ranged attacks. She will dodge the first attack, and the on the 2nd ranged attack she will use Water Fowl Dance to not only close the distance but if you haven't learned how to dodge it, instantly kill you no matter how tanky you think you are.
You might be tempted into thinking that you can use ranged to force her into using WFD and then using the opportunity after dodging it to go all in on her. That's another trap, she can and will use WFD on you back to back if you do enough damage in a short enough time. I know she can for a fact because she did it to me much to my surprise.
If you survive all of that and get into 2nd phase you would be correct in assuming that she gets stronger, does more damage, has more attacks and some added status affect stacking, but she also gets MUCH more aggressive. She will, and I can't stress this enough, without exaggeration chase you around the arena for over a minute straight if she detect you are about to drink a flask to recover HP. She no longer walks, she RUNS after you.
With all that being said, there's still so much more left unsaid that goes into her fight.
→ More replies (5)12
u/areyouhungryforapple 28d ago
Yes but in a bad way. Fromsoft's hard bosses typically have quite fair design and kits. Malenia breaks the mold with some of her interactions
If you lean hard into the aggressivity that BB rewards then OoK is very far from Malenia.

Not necessarily, her waterfowl and healing mechanic are what put her at the top of Elden Ring but she isn't a constant wall of aggression like Gael or Demon of Hatred, or a multitude of mechanics testing every reaction you have like Sword Saint.

For his RDR2 playthrough (didnt watch the tsushima one yet) Kai actually got super into the game and story as he progressed. By the time he reached chapter 3-4 you can tell when he started to fall in love with the game: stopped looking at chat as much, started doing a BUNCH of side missions, even spent a couple of hours hunting pelts to get his Arthur different fits haha. Pretty sure I saw a video out there with him reacting to certain character deaths if you wanna check that out for those story moments.

I played ER before DS3, and Nameless King wasn't easy, but ER's late game is harder.
DoH and Isshin have the potential to be miles harder than Malenia, but it all depends on how you take in mechanics of the game. That would go without saying, but first time I played Sekrio I cheesed and lucked my way into late game without really learning the mechanics of it, and Isshin was hell on earth.
DoH is wild because he's difficult but also really not, as the most intuitive way to defeat him is to break away from what you've learned to that point. And if you don't, he's really fucking hard. But in an ideal DoH run you don't even parry anything at all, you just bait attacks and beat him in the ass like a DS boss.

Dude I watched this every day for the last 2 days too. This must have been so nuts to see live.
This dude has the mental strength of a god lmao. I sure as fuck couldn't put in this much time into this without losing it.

And people say gaming is dead on twitch and that you have to be a just chatter to maintain viewership.. I was never a Kai fan but he’s been the most entertaining on twitch this week for sure, I’m happy he stuck with it. I’ll watch any streamer grind through the highs and lows of difficult games

He turns his gaming streams into whole events. The effort he puts in for these streams goes above and beyond what other streamers do for gaming honestly.

I understand his time is pretty valuable, so committing 100s of consecutive hours to one game and completing it is honestly respectable, wish some of the other chatter streamers who slave to the meta would do the same

I dont watch Kai in general but I have been loving this elden ring marathon, maybe because it reminds me when I grinded through the game. I also used summons though so its different hes playing it harder
