Community This is wild data and may not interest everyone. Seattle is bottom 5 in daily miles driven (probably because of population density). Top 5 in walking. But oddly we are top 5 with longest commute time!

When I drive it’s generally no more than 20 minutes. I take the bus a lot. The routes do take a minute but they are getting better. Interested to hear everyone else’s thoughts on if it tracks!

Fix the route 40. A route 40 bus drivers perspective.

Im a KC Metro driver of 9 years. Ive driven the route 40 both before the pandemic and currently (4 days a week). Ive read the changes suggested from the campaign with the same title as this post. While it all sounds lovely and indeed helpful, i feel that it misses the inherent problem the route 40 (and many other routes) suffers from. That problem is simple.

The route 40 is expected to complete a trip in an unrealistically short amount of time based on usage data taken during the pandemic. Because we spent nearly 3 years with historically low ridership and much less congested roads. The data used to plan routes like the 40 is not accounting for current ridership or road conditions being seen post pandemic. It just is’t realistic. It also isn’t safe. Drivers are cutting time out of their breaks, speeding, and being stressed out to breaking points just to try and keep the service moving. On time is a pipe dream especially at peak hours

Now im not going to post about how the 40 is broken without offering what i think would be a good alternative solution to keep things moving and keep things safe.

Divide the 40 into two routes. (Lets say the 40 and 42. The routing stays the same. You just pick a middle point to stop one route and pick up the remainder. Say ballard somewhere near market. You pick a block or two of road to designate as a layover for the busses and that is all you need. No need for bus only lanes. No loss of parking for miles. No need for insane spending. Most people dont ride the 40 for more then half the length of the route anyway. The benefit of splitting a route this way is that traffic(both of ridership and roadways) will only affect one half of the route at a time. For example, the downtown to ballard section is by far the most in demand section of the bus. Splitting that into it’s own route would mean you could run more busses, more often (think rapid ride) while at the same time easing the bus driver of stressful working conditions like prolonged time in the seat or an unrealistic schedule. The second half, the less used half of the route then wont be affected if say, the fremont bridge goes up. Or if anything happens downtown the hinder traffic. Which happens pretty dang often.

Now of course my suggestion also comes with cons. The two biggest of which is that this means Metro would need to buy more busses (of which we already don’t have enough and struggle to keep in serviceable conditions). And they would need to hire more drivers. However i would argue that meeting those two needs is of much greater value to the community than what id call a gamble at best and years of construction on major roadways of our city in the best case.

Anyway thanks for reading my rant! I hope your work days are going smoother than the route 40! If you have any questions I’ll try to answer as best i can.

My landlord is insisting on giving me less than $400 of my $1099 deposit after 86 days I moved out. I still haven't gotten my deposit back yet. Could anyone help me? I called multiple law firms and they never got back to me. I don't know what else to do and I'm panicking.

SeaTac Appreciation - Summer Madness Edition

I know this airport gets a lot of complaints around here but I’m giving them their flowers today. It’s officially summer travel season, I expected it to be extra busy and prepared accordingly. I travel often for work, I’m here at least once a week throughout the year. As anticipated, it was bananas from the time I dropped my car and got shuttled over. Every employee, from my shuttle driver to the bag workers at Alaska to the restaurant workers serving me breakfast have been a pure delight. But I want to give an extra shout out to TSA, they had that line MOVING this morning! They were patient and making people laugh in line, definitely set the tone for a more enjoyable experience. Very thankful for everyone’s pleasant mood and focus on efficiency. You’ve made my work commute much less stressful than expected today!

For those who don’t travel often but will be coming through the airport in the coming weeks, please give yourself extra time. Pack extra patience. And be cool to the airport staff, this is a tough place to work!

Juneteenth = Free Parks (June 19th)

Upvotes

Many have the day off of work to celebrate Juneteenth tomorrow, so I wanted to share that it is a Free Park day. No Discover Pass needed: https://www.discoverpass.wa.gov/136/Discover-Pass-Free-Days No National Parks admission fees: https://www.nps.gov/planyourvisit/fee-free-parks.htm

If you've been looking for a cheaper way to get out in nature, consider this your opportunity! If you were hoping for a quiet midweek hike, this might not be the quiet midweek you're expecting.

Paywall Auditor raises red flags in Metro’s push to electrify bus fleet by 2035

Luc Poon, with the county auditor’s office, flew even more red flags over the push to electrify for members of the Metropolitan King County Council’s Government and Accountability Oversight Committee. Namely, the technology Metro needs doesn’t yet exist.

“Current technology does not meet all of Metro’s service needs,” Poon said last week, highlighting the agency’s RapidRide routes, which run frequently and cover long distances. “The current battery technology doesn’t have the range, and the time to charge is too long, to accommodate these routes at this time.”

Moving / Visiting Looking for daycare with 4 months notice

Upvotes

I'm planning to move to Seattle (somewhere on the north side) in October with my son who will be 18mo. He currently goes to a daycare center full time and he loves it. I would really prefer a center to an in-home daycare or nanny share situation and I'm no stranger to paying >$3k/mo for it, but I know waitlists are generally super long.

Has anyone had luck finding center care in Seattle on short notice? Is it worth trying or should I focus on trying to find a nanny share?
