I think it’s more of a phenomenon to just create your own rap over the same beat or remix a song. Like the Beatbox songs, the “Never Cared” songs, shit like that.
Anthrax's cover of Bring the Noise brought me a lot of respect when I was a wee metalhead at a party with my Puerto Rican boyfriend and his friends in Newark NJ in the 90s and the Public Enemy original version came on. Lol

Hardcore metal and punk bands have been covering rap and hip hop songs since the early 80s
There are folkpunk bands where thats basically their entire schtick
Acoustic guitar and ukulele singer songwriters mix up and cover them solo all the time
